“The love only can make
The man a divine,
The divine a man”
Eager I to know and see it really. ( Kh Ibeton)
One contemporary prominent feminist writer Memchoubi, “Who are you” 1984 has a sharp and witty lines. In this poem she tries to share the plight of modern Manipur women, who are passive receiver and their voice unheard. The poet felt sad because she feels that women are neglected.
They don’t seem to exist.
You drench the earth with your blood
You arouse waves of excitement with your smile,
But you remain neglected,
Woman, O woman!
Whoever are you? (Memchoubi) The under need tone of the poem is quite strong; one can feel there is an urge to women to wake up and not be a passive receiver anymore. She is not happy to see the condition

Previously women did not give much importance to their personal existence. They were living for the family and children. With modernization and the well informed world that we lived in bring a sea changes in the minds of women in Manipur. They started voicing out their feeling and do not want to be at the back stage anymore. They are today generation women and know the best for themselves. The verses which were discussed in the earlier part of article ranges from the earlier generation of writers who were romantic and trying to run away from reality. Poet like Memchoubi strongly believes in equal treatment strong influence of western feminism. And with activist like Sharmila there is a universal voice of standing up for their fellow being for the cause of humanity. The lines are simple so the any ordinary reader can associate with. Comparatively there are many women writers now. And each of them is contributing in shaping up the legacy of women tradition in Manipuri …show more content…
To draw lines or attempting to define it is quite difficult. Manipur women I should say does not want a separate identity. She is happy with collective identity. She is not complaining with the natural role of motherhood, wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law. The treatment towards women is also not so bad comparatively, but there is a minute mistreatment which is like a plague is spreading towards women in Manipur. The best example I can think of is that in a typical household of Manipur society, women folks have to wait until all the men in the family are feed, then women turn to have food comes. They can even dare to think to have food earlier than their husband or father-in-law. The culturally conditioned experience of women is so pathetic especially, a daughter-in-law. Those women who are sensitive can feel it the rest feel that it’s quite normal. For example take any household for that matter, women are always treated secondary. The whole focus is towards men in the family, from decision making to buying things, or anything for that matter. This sounded very silly since it’s taken for granted that it’s quite normal. That’s exactly my point here. Every woman takes that it’s normal. Those women who try to find problem in this is look as abnormal and self centered. Thus comes in the question what is the role of a women in Manipur. It is always a passive receiver an ideal women. Who has define the role of
We can see loneliness and grief reflected in the poem because the woman talks about hardships. It is a sad poem; she feels lonely and vulnerable because she is no longer in touch with her lord. This woman should deal with her grief, face it, and move forward to make her life better. In The Wife’s Lament, the woman longs for companionship from her husband.
The poem talks about a woman who is lost in love, She expresses the feeling and emotion of true love.
Women in India were unaware of their miserable condition. It is in the post independence period the women’s quest for identity of her own commenced. The 20th century saw the shift from outer to inner sensibilities and no one can better understand a man or woman better a feminine writer. In modern English fiction a number of women novelists have arrived on the literary scene, they have set out making new forays in to the world of women. Nayantara Sahgal being a feminist writer has emphasized in her novels on freedom and a new definition of the New Women. Sahgal’s heroines are well aware of the injustice done to them in their marriage and they come out of this traditional bond.
Shashi Deshpande is one of the famous contemporary Indian novelists in English. She writes about the conflict between tradition and modernity in relation to women in middle class society. Shashi Deshpande’s novel deals with the theme of the quest for a female identity. The complexities of man-woman relationship especially in the context of marriage, the trauma of a disturbed adolescence. The Indian woman has for years been a silent sufferer. While she has played different roles-as a wife, mother, sister and daughter, she has never been able to claim her own individuality. Shashi Deshpande has emerged as a writer possessing deep insight into the female psyche. Focusing on the marital relation she seeks to expose the tradition
Ismat Chughtai, the Urdu writer of fierce feminist sentiments, has never got the accolades that have been bestowed upon her contemporaries- especially male contemporaries. She is remembered as a controversial writer who did not hide anything in her narratives; and hence irked her contemporary society in all possible manners. I am of the opinion that it is high time to re-evaluate the works of Ismat Chughtai by foregrounding her unflinching anti-hegemonic sentiments. Chughtai was a Feminist who challenged the status-quos and prudery of the Indian culture shaped up during the Victorian era. Her collection of short stories raised such a storm all across the country that she even had to face the court of law. The primary charge labelled against
This poem clearly represents the heart brokenness of a desperate man who had been shaded by the darkness of the piercing shock he experienced after he was forced to let go of his love, that was so dear to him. Although, he explains that with the love he presented to his significant other, it also brought hard times to their relationship, that caused her to be unhappy. The poet shows his difficult journey to successfully substain himself from her love.
Kamala Markandaya published “Nectar in a Sieve” in 1954 in attempts to enlighten the world about how hard it was to live a rural Indian life in that time period. She tells this story through Rukmani, a woman who was given away in marriage at the age of twelve to a poor tenant farmer that she had never met. Rukmani is very obedient to her husband as she helps him work in the unyielding fields and is a wonderful, caring mother to her seven children. The struggles that Markandaya highlights in her book are not only problems known to a peasant villager, but they are also specific to women. Women’s roles in India during the twentieth century is very different from women’s roles in the United States at that time, and because Rukmani was a woman, she played a silent but necessary part in her culture.
The poet expresses the true love he has for his beloved. But the sad part is that this love is
In the first half- line of the poem, the Wife sets the elegiac tone with three simple, clear words, “Full of sorrow” (The Wife’s Lament, line 1). In three words, the wife plainly describes how she feels. As the poem continues she tells her story and the explanation for her
Shashi Deshpande ranks high in the list of top Indian authors. She is the most popular Indian Woman writer in English. It is a fact that woman is mistreated and vanquished by the male community everywhere. She has been the subordinate monopolization and has to conform to male standards. In most of her novels, Shashi Deshpande has focused on the suppression of women in Indian society. She draws our attention to women’s exploitation, discrimination and commodification. She fairly rejects the system where there is no revolt of the women against the society and its norms which underrate women. Shashi Deshpande has dealt with 'women-issues', of how they are being treated and what the women actually want.
Traditionally, an Indian woman had only four roles and those were; Her role as a daughter, wife, sister, and lastly, a mother. The women in today’s time however are experiencing far reaching changes and are entering into new fields that were unknown to them. They are actively participating in social, economic and political activities. Unlike the older times, women today have received higher education.
First of all, this poem is written in a first person’s point of view. She begins by telling the reader the cause of her pain and suffering – her “beloved sweetheart bastard” which gravitates into a sense of bitterness and vengeance/retribution. In addition to that, the use of
The meaning of this poem is the speaker is so in love with her that he is incomplete. The techniques help bring out the meaning by using imagery phrases that show the longing for the women
Once you learn about feminism, it is impossible not to notice the misogynistic undertones in just about everything. From media to everyday life, it is a plague that runs rampant in the lives of everyone whether or not they realize it. For the sake of this paper, we will analyze these instances in a literary work. Linda Pastan, in her poem Marks, finds that traditional gender roles, denial of subjectivity and instrumentality cause the speaker to reject her role in her family.
In the poem “Woman” by Nikki Giovanni a woman goes through a painful journey of trying to turn herself into something she is not for a man. This woman gets to the point where she is less of what was as a person because of a man that refused to support her. Finally in the last stanza of the poem the woman finally realizes that she does not need a man to support her and can be happy on her own. This poem tells the reader that one does not need someone else to make them happy and it conveys this message through many metaphors and symbols.
