There are many reasons I want to pursue a degree in clinical mental health counseling. First and foremost helping people has always been a passion of mine from an early age. Having come from a troubled past as a child and young adult and being able to completely turn my life around, I want to be able to help other troubled youth do the same. I fully understand how dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, grief and loss, mental health disorders, and physical handicaps can have a negative, lasting impact on a child, if not dealt with appropriately and in a timely manner. While education is an important aspect in any child’s life, the social and emotional component is often left out. After speaking with colleagues both MSW and LPC’s I was left with more questions than answers. However, as I read the required core course lists, the Clinical Mental Health Counselor courses intrigued me. I felt like I had finally found my God- given purpose in life. My goal is to pursue my LPC after obtaining my MEd Counseling and Development: Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration. My intention is to serve adolescent populations working with mental health issues, and addiction issues. I would like to gain work experience and exposure in multiple levels of treatment and in as many different settings, as is reasonable. I am interested in further developing my counseling skills to include individual, group, and family approaches to living with and working with adolescents with dual diagnoses. My hope is to finish my career in private practice. My background in education gives me a deep-seeded passion for learning.
