Before I accepted my current role with the health department, I was originally hired by the county Sheriff’s department. The selection processes consisted of an Application Mental Health Exam, Medical Exam, Preliminary Interview, Background Check and Polygraph examination.
In comparing only two of the methods, I’d like to focus on the mental health and polygraph exam. Beginning with the mental health evaluation itself, it was a rigorous process that consisted of over a three hour questionnaire of life events, views, fears and successes and secrets. The process was later extended to speaking with a metal health counselor. Working in the police force, it is important to know if you have someone who is reliable, both psychically and mentally.
When I feel stressed I do not let the client see it. I hold my composure and out of the clients presence I relax my mind by walking or listening to calm music. Usually after I remove myself from the stressful atmosphere I am able to think better and come up with ideas to help me with the stressor.
In total, the county received 19 applications from prospective public defender candidates; six were invited to interview. Power can often bring great change in a person, whether it is for the better or for the worse. Many authors showcase how power and its abuse affect others and the person in power in their stories. In the memoir Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, Bryan is a lawyer who aims to expose the discrimination in the legal system by helping those who have experienced bias due to their race or socio-economic status. In the short story “Ashes”, by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Ashleigh is a main character who is being controlled by her father to steal money from her mother. In Just Mercy, Braun Stevenson expertly utilizes dialogue throughout the book to generate empathy for the victims of the legal system while also reinforcing the theme of people tending to abuse power;
It is pretty awkward to see such a professional writer as Anne Lamott talk about first drafts with such praise. Her fourth paragraph actually makes me question my own process of writing. My writing process is pretty similar to her own, however, I tend to think that writing in such way is a sign of weakness as a writer. Even though I tend to have the same process, reading this article, confirm that my beliefs were wrong. Nevertheless, I have always believed that before writing you have to know the structure, the way things will flow, the coherence and the adequacy of your writing. However, after reading the article, I understood that “[...]all first drafts are terrible.Coherence and, yes, brilliance come from revision”(Anne).

After interviewing 3 professionals in different areas, I noticed more similarities than differences. All of these professionals have included the patient and their family members in the assessment and treatment process. According to the mental health counselor, she gathers information from the client’s family because it is crucial to their healing process. The special education teacher attends IEP meetings in which the parent can attend and provide information to help with the child’s success. Additionally, the nurse includes the client’s significant other when providing care.

As part of our preparation for placement, we were required to make a role play on a given scenario in pairs. Each of us had to play the role of the social work student and the service user. We chose to use Miss Allen’s scenario, because we both had experience of working the adults. In preparation for this task, we met twice to clarify our roles and discussed the scenario as we understood it. We also discussed how we were going to assess Miss Allen, and what help we would offer her. The preparation was an important part of our task because it challenged us to think of the interview within its widest context, taking into account the particular needs of Miss Allen, agency policy and procedure and ourselves as student social
