The values that enrich our society provide a foundation for individuals to base their morals and actions upon. However, with the progression of time, those same values tend to morph; ultimately revolutionizing the beliefs and morals of those in the society. As a result, varying generations embody differing values, and the values that are shared are often perceived differently. This phenomenon exists throughout the different generations, and its effects are also evident with the difference in mental health. More explicitly, the values of success and self-realization are contrasted between Generation X and Generation Z, which ultimately exacerbates the generational difference in mental health.
The importance of success exhibits itself in Generation X and Generation Z, but the perception of success can facilitate a generation’s mental health. The difference between Generation X and Generation Z lies in their beliefs of the merit of success. In other words, Generation X believes that while anyone can attain success, the journey to success determines the legitimacy of their success. In contrast, Generation Z from birth was exposed to advertisements and other messages implying that happiness depends on good looks, popularity, and material goods (Gray). Therefore, Generation Z bypasses all moral and ethical standards in their paths to success, yet they feel the same satisfaction as Generation X.
