This is an issue with I am constantly torn. There is something so simple and almost beautiful in a people voting and deciding as a group can’t we just vote our way to utopia?  However, when you think about the politics behind what even ends up on a ballot, you can start to feel powerless, and the vote meaningless; I understand why these women would want to fight for something greater.

Latino’s haven’t always had it easy in America, some were luckier than others. Hector Garcia growing up was one of the lucky ones. His parents were educators but their credentials were denied. They resorted to teaching their kids inside the home. The Garcia kids were pushed by their parents to become doctors, so they could have a better future. Hector Garcia graduated from the University of Texas and did his residency in Omaha, Nebraska. Garcia volunteered as a infantry officer during world war two, but was denied to practice medicine while in the army. Ruben Salazar was born on March 3, 1928, in Ciudad Juarez, and moved to El Paso, Texas where he grew up. Ruben Salazar was a well-known journalist and activist who brought together Chicanos and Americans. He was one of the first non-white journalists in an all-white male profession and proved that he was just as capable of journalism as all of them. Salazar brought together Americans and Chicanos in many ways, he reported on Chicano events and put himself in between a very tense boundary. Salazar began as a journalist for The Los Angeles Times and became a foreign correspondent until a new more powerful Chicano movement brought him back. The newest generation, also known as the Millennials, has sparked one of the latest topics of debate and that is voting. Recent examples of young voters excelling political candidates have occurred with Bernie Sanders and even helped bring Barrack Obama into the presidency. These articles by The New York Times delve into the underlying cause of the low turnout rates. Most of these articles place the blame for low voter turnouts on colleges. Colleges are not to blame for these turnouts as they don’t discourage political thinking.

The LVW was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1920. It was organized just six months before the ratification of the 19th amendment. This risky venture began as a way to assist and encourage the 20 million women execute their new responsibilities as voters. Since its establishment, the League has been an activist organization that stresses that all citizens should be involved in advocacy. At a first glance, one might look at the current status of women’s rights and conclude that much has changed since the beginning of the twentieth century. This is not entirely untrue - women have indeed been granted universal suffrage in the United States. However, there are still significant challenges which women face in the present day. This paper seeks to understand the early women’s suffrage movement in all aspects, which will include individuals, events, and activism. Although it did not happen immediately, this movement resulted in success in the form of universal suffrage. Through various activist tactics ranging from public protests to the more behind-the-scenes activism such as written articles. By studying and understanding activist movements of the past, we are better able to be successful in our present-day activism. This essay will also analyse the problems with voting that women face today, and attempt to discover ways in which the current situation can be improved. Even though women have had suffrage for the past 96 years, they still face troubles when it comes to election day. Voter ID laws are emerging in many states, which can create struggles for women at the polls. This has disenfranchised many female voters, and has an even larger impact of women who come from minority groups. By raising awareness for these problems, we can help make change happen to improve the situation, just like the suffragettes did in the early women’s rights movement.
