Currently, I work with a team of 30 mentors. Immediately the title of this course drew me in because I want to make sure that I am being an effective leader and giving my mentors the proper motivation. Unfortunately, I have dealt with bosses before who do not know how to lead or motivate, which destroyed their team. I desire to equip myself with the proper knowledge of leadership and motivation. My hope is that this class will jumpstart my understanding of both topics.
As far as research goes, I am very interested in first generation students and their college success. As well as, learning more about the impact of peer mentors. I have noticed that UNL has a ton of peer mentors and I am wondering if UNL is over-mentoring to our first generation
As a peer mentor at the College of San Mateo, I volunteer my time to help incoming freshmen thorough the rough transition of high school to community college. As a underrepresented student who moved to the U.S from a third world country, I work with a lot of students like myself and make sure that they have all the tools and resources to do well in their academics. I have meeting with my mentees every week to check their progress throughout the semester. In addition to weekly meetings, I also have one on one tutoring sessions to help my mentees if they are struggling in their classes, especially math and science.
This is my reflective account of my performance as a mentor in a clinical setting, assessing the learning environment and the strategies used for teaching and assessing a newly qualified theatre nurse.

Being a leader is always regarded at as directing folks on a daily basis, however, you must still be able to allow your subordinates a chance to lead as well or they will never develop the confidence to lead on their own. My definition of leadership is having the ability to influence others to accomplish their personal and organizational goals. Furthermore, many people have goals they’d like to pursue, but often find it hard or complicated accomplishing these tasks not having the right guidance and mentorship from a leader who looks out for their best interest.
The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. As I am the mentor, I will follow this cycle in a clockwise direction with Jude, so she would have to reflect on the skills learnt by reviewing the whole situation (Kolb’s learning cycle 1984 in Rose and Best 2005, p.129). This would enable Jude to
This mentoring opportunity is well suited for a student like myself, as I have always performed well in the English classes I have attended throughout high school. English has always been one my most adored subjects, and I would love to influence others to think of this as well. As a peer helper, I am well aware of the responsibilities I have, including being punctual, enthusiastic and helpful. I can assure you that I will use my leadership skills amongst other skills to make the best of this experience. I also am able to help both, groups of students and individuals as the GPP 3O0 class has well prepared me for instances like this. Through this opportunity, I wish to improve my communication, multitasking and initiative skills. I am certain
The aim of this assignment is to critically reflect on the experience of mentoring and assessing a student in clinical practice. As the student was on a four week placement the assessment process will be discussed incorporating the qualities of the mentor and the effect it can have on the mentor/student relationship. In turn evaluating the learning environment and teaching strategies used including learning styles, reflecting on how they were applied to help the student. Finally, the evaluation of overall performance as a mentor. For the purpose of this work a pseudonym will be used to maintain confidentiality hence the student will be known as ’A’. Whilst on my 5-week block, I was having a conversation with my mentor teacher about any possibility of me taking on any Physical Education lessons, as my dream is working as a Physical Education teacher. He mentioned that in the previous years he has run a football clinic with the local preschool ‘Grey Court’ and he asked me to organise and run a football clinic with the local preschool. This project runs closely with the Mooroolbark East Primary school’s goal of linking the school and the community, this has fostered a growing relationship with the preschool and the primary school and of the 49 children that were there over the two days 39 of them were coming to Mooroolbark East Primary next year. Organising the day, I spoke with my mentor teacher to find out how he planned and ran the day. He mentioned having 5 stations where the children can learn a new skill, then rotate to the next one. The next step was to get in contact with Grey Court Preschool and organise a day and a time for them to meet us here, with the unpredictable weather it was challenging to choose a day for them to make their way up to the school without getting soaked. This required me to be in constant communication with the preschool. As well as planning a football clinic I also had to speak to the Prep teachers at the school, to organise a small tour around the prep buildings.
As part of my introduction, I would like to mention that my research project is about mentoring where I have chosen ‘questioning’ as my strategy. In this report, I will discuss in detail about my ‘Mentoring through Questioning’, which is a key for my research project report. Here, I will cover the project’s context in which it was set, my aims and focus of the project, my justification on why I have chosen mentoring through questioning and the types of questions being used during this project, in support of the relevant literature. And then eventually, I will mention about the interactive sessions between a mentor and mentee, the reflection or the perspectives, specifying the self-analysis as well as the required feedback from mentee as part of the research strategy. Later, I will conclude this report by mentioning about the effectiveness of mentoring sessions and the future actions planned for my skills development.
a. My interviewing skills have come to help me know my mentor (Harriet Kulakoff) as a person because they allowed me to engage with her in conversation not only about her thoughts on healthy aging but to explore some of her interests such as playing tennis and golf or going swimming. Throughout the interview, building off the questions asked by my team members I was also able to illicit her opinion about varying issues including the use of social media and gain her thought on the younger generation and what we can do to support each other as we age as well as become more engaged with each other in light of our seeming dependence on social media. It was an enriching experience to listen to my mentor and having the right interviewing skills to ensure that both she, myself and my team members were comfortable and engaged aided in us having a successful and productive interview.
Mentorship is very important in the workplace especially in the area of training and development. The mentor-protégé relationship is a much needed relationship that begins in the early career stage and this relationship involves the current or new employees and the supervisor or other colleagues that provide work-related guidance. The relationship itself is comprehensive and involves “educational, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual development” (Greenhaus,, Callanan, & Godshalk, 2010, p 211). One of the initial task of the early career the establishment of the career field which involves the gaining of the workplace competence, learn what is needed to excel in the organization, and to gain acceptance in the workplace to be recognized as the valued employee. There are many ways of achieving the above mentioned advantages in the workplace which one main method is through the use of the mentorship program.
There have been many people in my life that had served as a mentor to me. This one in particular has had the biggest impact on my life so far. He was my basketball coach, Coach Ham. Our relationship ever since the first day I saw him has always been good. We both met at the Euclid High School girl’s gym. My sister had basketball practice that day and the coach wanted me to go up there too. When I walked into the gym, I saw him sitting in an athletic sports chair on the side yelling out plays to run to the other girls. After my sister, Rashida, introduced me to him, he asked me if I wanted to practice with them, probably because I had already had my basketball gear on from my previous practice at the middle school. I did and but didn’t want to practice with them because they were all older than me. I thought I would not be able to keep up with the other girls and they would get angry at me or I would slow them down. After a lot
With the development of the more organic and less formal organisational structures the role of mentors has shifted with these changes. Unlike previously where mentors where seen as formal trainers who taught newcomers the processes and got them acquainted with the cultures and the systems within the organisation. Which required good interpersonal skills and a good knowledge of the activity or tasks the mentee would have to undertake, and be able to effectively relay or demonstrate the tasks or activities to the mentee. As opposed to more recently where a mentor would have to be more of an emotional counselor and demonstrate more skills than were traditionally required from
As a current student at Aims, I have learned a lot and am excited to continue my journey towards successful completion of my degree. I have had great experiences with all my instructors, received some great tutoring help and have made new friends for the future. I have been enrolled at Aims for over a year and have only had one issue: getting assigned to an advisor.
