I’m a confident public speaker and experienced communicator. I gained experience in this skills thanks to several extracurricular activities that push participants to our limits and beyond. For instance, ACE is mentorship program in which at each meeting we learn the basic of Architecture Construction and Engineering. We are expected to design, discuss, develop a plan and present to the whole team several different parts of an architecture or engineering project, all of this in two hours. Thanks to ACE I learned to work as fast as possible while preserving quality and efficiency. I believe a Peer Mentor should make it his/her assignment provide support, encouragement, and information to new students. I was attracted to this position because I believe I can successfully do so by listening, comprehending, questioning, clarifying and give constructive feedback to fellow students with any type of situation they are dealing with. A peer mentor is someone who leads by example, a role model to others. Almost every job I have ever had, I had to demonstrate skills a mentor has to possess. Merylin Orris, RDH, BSDH is a former dental hygiene instructor of mine fom the Dental Hygiene program at SPC. She is a part-time dental hygiene clinical instructor at St Petersburg College Dental Hygiene Program. As a dental hygiene instructor, she followed my advancement through the two-year Associate in Dental Hygiene program and provided me with much valuable information and also with technical skills. As a mentor, she introduced me to the responsibilities and the joy of being a clinical instructor. Her passion for teaching and patience toward the students and colleagues captured my attention even before I applied for the bachelor's program. I want to be a mentor because I want to be a support system for a struggling student who feels like they won't be able to succeed due to their current home life or financial status. Furthermore, I feel like I can relate with many of the "at-risk" students because I come from a low income family who couldn't afford to give me all the opportunities like other more fortunate students at my school but made sure I was able to be both successful personally and academically by constantly pushing me to try my hardest. I also want to be give me able to give back and impact my current community in a positive way and in my opinion there is no better way to do that than through giving guidance and advice to children.

1)  I am applying for the peer mentor position because I want to give back to the program. When I was accepted into the EOP program I was not ready for college. I still had a high school mentality where friends and partying was always first. Then EOP happened where I realized friends and partying were not going to help me earn a degree. I am grateful for the support of the mentors and faculty members that help push me along the way. I learn that responsibility and time management were the keys to doing well. This is what I want to give back to these incoming EOP student. Someone that can help them be college ready and take advice from an upper classmen. I have already been through EOP and successfully completed half way of sophomore year. So I have the knowledge and ability to share skills to the income students.

This mentoring opportunity is well suited for a student like myself, as I have always performed well in the English classes I have attended throughout high school. English has always been one my most adored subjects, and I would love to influence others to think of this as well. As a peer helper, I am well aware of the responsibilities I have, including being punctual, enthusiastic and helpful. I can assure you that I will use my leadership skills amongst other skills to make the best of this experience. My ACE mentors have helped me to realize that this job is more than the just designing a building. They made realize that when you design a building you have to tailor it to the communities needs and that is about the community.They also taught me that you have to think about all aspects of building from cost to environmental impact. My mentors have been trying to help me discern my future job and are pushing me to pursue construction management in college. My Mentors have given me advice to succeed in college and I know they always have my back.

My vision is to come out of my comfort zone and began to witness the love of God to other people, specifically younger women and their children. When it comes to mentoring, I am a person who is very laid back, and not much of a upfront type of person. In order words, I have not gotten to the point where I would just straight come out and talk to someone, but when the Holy Spirit leads me to talk to someone to talk to, I will. My mentor meets no strangers, and when I am with her, she encourages me talk to people, and gives me the wisdom on what to say, and how to say the right words. My Mentor explained to me that all of my students have some sort of accommodation... whether it be behavior modifications, speech, or academic accommodations.She has different strategies for each student, because they all learn in a different style of learning and in a different type of environment. These are three that my mentor use every day:

Mentoring is the process of guiding or coaching less experienced individuals, especially in areas requiring adequate skills and hands-on capabilities. In some practice, the word mentorship is being used as a professional relationship between a mentor (a person or a group, who are directly assigned to provide specific information or knowledge regarding specific field of interest) and a mentee (the one requiring guidance and mentoring). The practice of mentoring has been used for a long time that its essence has been an important part of employee development especially in the field of management. Considering that mentoring is based mostly on informal relationship between a mentor and a mentee, the process is mostly based on type of communication which most of the time is transferred informally as the situation requires. In the process of mentoring, the mentor and the mentee undergo a certain relationship that makes mentoring important. It is also during this stage wherein mentorship can be seen effective or not.

The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. Mentorship is very important in the workplace especially in the area of training and development. The mentor-protégé relationship is a much needed relationship that begins in the early career stage and this relationship involves the current or new employees and the supervisor or other colleagues that provide work-related guidance. The relationship itself is comprehensive and involves “educational, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual development” (Greenhaus,, Callanan, & Godshalk, 2010, p 211). One of the initial task of the early career the establishment of the career field which involves the gaining of the workplace competence, learn what is needed to excel in the organization, and to gain acceptance in the workplace to be recognized as the valued employee. There are many ways of achieving the above mentioned advantages in the workplace which one main method is through the use of the mentorship program.

Lastly, I would love to be able to work closely with underclassmen and emerging adults. I love being a mentor to this age group, because it is so interesting and comforting to know that we are all going through the some of the same problems. Now that I am in the process on being a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters I know that being a mentor is something that I love doing. I want to be useful to people, and help them find their way through college, and life. I just want to help people with problems that they are having. I know that I speak for most when I say that money is a huge stressor, we are all trying to better out lives, but through that we have to spend a lot of money in order to get to where we want. Another thing is that some don’t know what they want to do with their lives, and I know that was a problem for me my first year. Thankfully, I joined the pilots program, which gave use passion planners. My passion planner was my life my freshman year. It is basically a year long planner that is all about finding your passion. I would highly recommend this planner to anyone that wants help finding their passion, willing to put in work every day.
