Unfortunately, my workplace does not have any trained interpreters on staff. Currently, the RBHA, Mercy Maricopa Integrated Health, requires that language service go through AKORBI. This business offer interpreters for 170 different languages. This means that our agency will request an interpreter when required for clinical and/or non-clinical meetings. We also have access to phone interpretation services through Volance Interpreter. However, at times, since we have Spanish speaking staff, we will use our staff as interpreters. The RBHA will only pay for interpretation services if the ‘interpreter’ passed both the verbal and writing Spanish test. The agency forms are not available in the language appropriate for the population, such as Spanish speaking, etc. However, the agency employs clinicians fluent in many different languages including ASL to promote the client’s involvement and understanding into the services provided by the agency.
Mariposa Women and Family Center is a non-profit organization in Orange, California. According to the Mariposa website, the organization’s mission and purpose is for “empowering women and families to achieve positive changes in their lives” (About Us Section, para 5). Mariposa provides high quality, low cost mental health and recovery counseling, life skills education, and supportive services to low income women and family that would not be able to receive these services without these low cost programs (http://www.mariposacenter.org, About Us Section, para 1). They have several different programs within this organization. The four major programs that this organization provides are community counseling, substance abuse, group support and Cal Works.
We have to ensure that all our physicians and care team are only using “qualified” interpreters instead of untrained family members and friends, minor children and bilingual staff. We also have to ensure that everyone is documenting.

If the president of Caritas Christi Health Care has been warned after receiving the sexual harassment complaints, and if he still behaves in the same way, he should be fired. Although he defends himself saying that the gestures he made are typical of his culture, and if he knows that women are taking offence because of their gestures, he should have stopped as soon as he has been warned of the first complaint. In the state of Massachusetts the state law states that the emergency department patients with limited English proficiency have the right to a medical interpreter (Ginde, Clark, & Camargo, 2009). Having a medical interpreter for patients that have limited English proficiency will increase the quality of health care they receive; it also increases patient compliance and increases patient satisfaction. The use of professional interpreters is shown to decrease revisiting the emergency department, and increase this population’s use of outpatient clinics for follow up care (Ginde et al., 2009).
Many interpreters are misled in thinking of a company that values intelligence and language skills, when it turns out later that they hire bilingual persons to apply their protocols only. Consequently, interpreters should be content with low salaries; this job does not require a degree. And that is at the time of interviews. Next, there are distinct departments and lines of authority, work activities are designed around individuals. In this call center, 100% of calls are recorded and monitored and employees are required to follow extensive rules and regulations and to minimize formal contact with other employees if not functionally necessary. One supervisor sits at higher booth keeping an eye on 10 Interpreters. A manager of each department (that handles one language) walks around examining closely to ensure there are no deviations. Indeed, this is management in the survival mode and there is no workplace spirituality.
The individuals/entities seeking interpreter service will continue to seek the most cost effective provider of interpreter services, which is often the most inexperienced and unqualified interpreter for the assignment. Budding interpreters may see that working interpreters conduct themselves in an unprofessional or unethical manner and they may pursue a career in the field for all the wrong reasons. The new interpreters will, in turn, continue the unprofessional behavior and teach it to the new interpreters after them, causing a snowball effect. Many hearing participants have expectations of what the interpreter role is due to the unprofessional interpreter teaching them what to expect out of laziness and contempt. Interpreters in a high school art class who participate in the projects alongside the students are showing every participant in that setting (Deaf student[s], hearing students, teacher, colleagues, school administration) that our job role enables us to participate in the activities
The designation of English as our official language removes a major financial burden from the United States, both in the cost of translated documents and interpreting services. Current laws require federal documents and programs, including drivers examinations, voting ballots, public education classes, health care, welfare, court cases, and government statements to be made available in any language that crosses a numerical threshold, at a high cost to taxpayers (“Facts and Figures”). The population in the area the organization serves is overwhelmingly English speaking and there is no indication on the organization’s website that there is any bilingual staff available. It does not appear that the organization intends to serve anyone that is not English speaking. For this reason, a form that is available solely in English seems appropriate. If there are individuals in the area that are monolingual in a language other than English, interpretation services would be needed.
Hospitals must provide translators for many languages that patients speak. Hospitals understand the need to do this, and are happy to do this. Providing translators is done at the expense of the hospital, and is not reimburse by Medicare of Medicaid. (Mujica, 2003). Hospitals must pay for the translators, and the cost is not reimbursed.
