Many interpreters are misled in thinking of a company that values intelligence and language skills, when it turns out later that they hire bilingual persons to apply their protocols only. Consequently, interpreters should be content with low salaries; this job does not require a degree. And that is at the time of interviews. The individuals who utilize UPMC Mercy’s medical detoxification treatment represent a population of diverse educational attainment with chronic addiction and comorbid disorders. However, most of the patients’ socioeconomic status falls between the middle class or lower class. The age of participants ranged from 24 to 65 years. The bulk of admitted patients receives behavioral health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act health care marketplace or the private health care system.

Mariposa Women and Family Center is a non-profit organization in Orange, California. According to the Mariposa website, the organization’s mission and purpose is for “empowering women and families to achieve positive changes in their lives” (About Us Section, para 5). Mariposa provides high quality, low cost mental health and recovery counseling, life skills education, and supportive services to low income women and family that would not be able to receive these services without these low cost programs (http://www.mariposacenter.org, About Us Section, para 1). They have several different programs within this organization. The four major programs that this organization provides are community counseling, substance abuse, group support and Cal Works.

The educational system has been slow to recognize interpreters as professionals and often categorize them as classified or paraprofessionals in the classroom. However, the American with Disabilities Act and the earlier No Child Left Behind Act (which is updated to …) categorize interpreters as related service providers, but it appears that from the little bit of investigation I have done thus far reveals two key issues that I would like to do further research. First, as related service providers should educational interpreters be held accountable for collecting data related to DHH students accessibility and use of the interpreter in the mainstream classroom? And would such accountability have an impact on the student's education, IEP, and the educational systems view of the role an educational interpreter has in the classroom? I am still working out the kinks and clarity of how I want to tackle this research, but have mulled it over since learning about some of the issues related to mainstream interpreted education for DHH students while in my BA program at UNC. While discussions of integrated care are not new in the United States, the research literature has largely been about blending mental and chemical health into physical health systems. Using a critical hermeneutic application of interpretive phenomenology, this study aims to address that gap by interviewing adults with serious mental illness about their experience receiving physical health services within a community mental health center. Nine individuals, five clients and four providers, interviewed for this study were selected using the critical case criterion in partnership with the community mental health center. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. Data analysis was conducted within-case followed by cross-case analysis technique.

When Mary first approaches me, as a worker, it will be important to arrange for an interpreter to assist Mary in explaining her situation. As English is her second language, she may be more comfortable talking about her experience in her native language and a good interpreter is a key element in empowering her in the process. However, care should be taken while enlisting an interpreter to ensure that the interpreter is unknown to the family and will not breach confidentiality by relating Mary’s situation to other members of her community. Given that she and her husband are well known in their community, this could potentially be a social embarrassment for Mary.

The individuals/entities seeking interpreter service will continue to seek the most cost effective provider of interpreter services, which is often the most inexperienced and unqualified interpreter for the assignment. Budding interpreters may see that working interpreters conduct themselves in an unprofessional or unethical manner and they may pursue a career in the field for all the wrong reasons. The new interpreters will, in turn, continue the unprofessional behavior and teach it to the new interpreters after them, causing a snowball effect. Many hearing participants have expectations of what the interpreter role is due to the unprofessional interpreter teaching them what to expect out of laziness and contempt. Interpreters in a high school art class who participate in the projects alongside the students are showing every participant in that setting (Deaf student[s], hearing students, teacher, colleagues, school administration) that our job role enables us to participate in the activities

If the president of Caritas Christi Health Care has been warned after receiving the sexual harassment complaints, and if he still behaves in the same way, he should be fired. Although he defends himself saying that the gestures he made are typical of his culture, and if he knows that women are taking offence because of their gestures, he should have stopped as soon as he has been warned of the first complaint. He apparently did not take heed of the warning of the first complainer, so there should not be any hesitation in removing him from the position.

Thank you for allowing Rialto Family Health Services (RFHS) to join in the Mayors Challenge collaboration last week. Our organization was surprised to find no identifiable measures established in current social service programs to track veterans in San Bernardino County. As you know, without the ability to specifically track the veterans, they will remain included in the compiled statistics. RFHS believes this tracking method would significantly help many organizations and communities effectively decrease the 47% rate of veterans’ homelessness in many counties.
