A ribbon for kids tractor pull in Finney County, a certificate for participating in seventh grade volleyball, a medal for the fifth grade spelling bee, a ribbon for pee wee swine showmanship, a trophy for five to six year old soccer; these are just a few among the many awards of participation I found in my room beneath the dust. Similar to other students, I grew up receiving trophy after trophy, medal after medal, and ribbon after ribbon for every county fair, sports season, and spelling bee I participated in.

First off Congrats on the promotion to a very distinguished rank, part of the elite officers of the Armed Forces. I know it is well deserved. I appreciate the opportunity I was bestowed to meet you and also having my spouse be a part of your leadership team. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” this phrase is a great representation of the problem that children of the world face due to participation trophies. Participation trophies kill the drive of young kids unless they are taught to accept them correctly. Children need to know that these awards should not be a goal.

On behalf of Beaufort Middle School, myself, Dr. Tomon and The Faculty Council we congratulate you and your student on being selected for membership to the Beaufort Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The NJHS is a program that celebrates the success of many of our hardest working students, based upon academic achievement as well as the demonstration of outstanding character, service, leadership, and citizenship. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Members of NJHS take pride in their accomplishments and work diligently toward the goal of attaining a superior education and contributing to their school and community. They do their best to provide positive role models for their peers.

Participation trophies can vary from sports to clubs to activities of any type. Many people believe these standard awards provide many benefits for children and their childhood growth. However, children today have become accustomed to receiving an item or prize regardless the outcome of their effort, which could potentially send an unhealthy message about achievement and diminish the value of the award.

Throughout different time periods and civilizations come many different types of art that would never be comparable to those of another time or place. There are also the pieces that come from a completely different time and place, but yet they can still be compared to one another. The Torso of a God (Egyptian, New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, last decade of the reign of Amenhotep III, Granodiorite, 1359-1349 B.C.) and the Statue of Asklepios (Greek, Hellenistic period, Pentelic Marble, 2nd century B.C.) are two sculptures made hundreds of years apart, yet they both display many similarities and show how art is constantly changing whilst keeping the same core ideas.

The National Honors Society allows students to be build and create traits that are essential in a successful adult. I truly believe that hold many of these traits and joining the National Honor Society will grant me the opportunity to expand on these traits and grow as a person. Thus far I have focus greatly on the scholarship aspect of NHS and have been dedicated to my academics. I have held my GPA above 4.0 and have always been devoted to maintaining that high level of academic success. The skills I have shown in devoting myself to my academics can be easily translated into my dedication for the other aspects of leadership, service and character. Being inducted into National Honors Society requires a student to demonstrate all of the four qualities many of our role models in the present and in the past have possessed, which include: scholarship, service, leadership and character. As I’m considered a candidate for this group, I already possess the quality of scholarship and it is my duty in this paper to show that I hold the other three important attributes needed to qualify for this institution.

It is unbelievable that this year is my last year in Charlestown High School. As I look back at the past three years, there were several poignant moments when I was struggling with my classes and would have given up trying to achieve my goals. But as a diligent student, I chose to endure those moments. And that is how I become an outstanding student today. National Honor Society honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Being nominated to become a member of the National Honor Society is a highly prestigious honor, and I am very grateful to be a candidate.

I think I should be considered for a membership for the National Junior Honor Society or NJHS because I am a different individual with a dream. My dream is to fulfill my parents dream and make them proud. My parents have done so much for me and they deserve to be repaid. My parents want me to go to a good college and graduate

Another contrast between Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are the most noteworthy honors that a scout can be awarded. While being in any of these two Scouting organizations, a scout can earn numerous awards. The highest award that a scout can be presented with, nonetheless, differs between organizations. In Boy Scouts, the highest achievement a Boy Scout can receive is an Eagle Scout. Rather than an Eagle Scout being an award, it is the highest position in the rank system. Becoming an Eagle Scout takes much work and dedication to the organization. One receiving this award will have to meet several requirements. One must show that they are progressing in the program through their “leadership, service, and outdoor skills” (Trail to Eagle). Moreover, in order to become an Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must first move forward in the ranking system. The thrill of winning a trophy for the first time is always memorable, however, it brings up the question: Is receiving an award for participating just as exciting? Participation awards are a topic highly debated among those of all ages, with none agreeing on a single answer. Individuals who are under the impression that they are essential believe they boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. This may be true in some cases, but these trophies could be doing more harm than good. Although in the moment they may appear to be wholesome, they have a lasting effect on children as they grow older. Many children put loads of effort into winning awards, which is belittled by participation trophies that are not only unhelpful and unrewarding, but don’t teach them the important values learned by losing.

Individuals can control their badges by choosing where to earn them and depending on the privacy specifications of the backpack determining who can see them. Often these badges reflect educational experiences beyond the classroom, calling attention to study abroad, student government, or community service. A collection of badges can function as a distributed portfolio that may eventually be accessible from a variety of social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google Plus. When badges serve as part of a resume or portfolio, they tell prospective employers a more detailed story about the projects and activities that define a student’s learning, including both the hard and soft skills that were acquired.
