The quota policies have shifted the student composition in public institutions due to an increasing enrollment of lower caste students. In recent years, new student organizations have emerged across higher education institutions. These organizations build solidarity among the lower caste students and raise their consciousness on a range of issues (Mukherji, 2016). This phenomenon is challenging the historical dominance of cultural capital by the higher castes. In the recent years, the student demographics has changed but overwhelming numbers of faculty belong to the higher castes. Therefore, lower caste students face individual and institutional retaliation in the form of covert and overt aggressions. The current meritocratic arguments (against
The caste system has been extremely stable in India for over two thousand years. It is only since the more modern, independent state of India was formed that the system has come under any scrutiny at all. It is presently outlawed, but many of the practices, attitudes and traditions remain ingrained in Hindu society (University of Wyoming, 1997).
Initiative 42 is the result of nearly 200,000 Mississippians signing petitions to have an initiative placed on the November ballot to amend the state Constitution. If passed, this citizen led initiative will hold the Mississippi Legislature accountable for keeping its promise to fully fund public schools, which the Legislature has only done twice in the past 18 years. That should be simple enough, but Governor Phil Bryant, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves, and Speaker of the House Phillip Gunn have used their power and position to help confuse the public about the Initiative. Why? Such action is contrary to statements the Governor has made in the past regarding the public’s role in education. For example, in a December 2, 2014 article
Yes. The author gives many moral reasons why he believes an invasion on Iraq would be wrong.
1. One of the main arguments of the debate was situated against inventive and the ways it presented itself in Hillary Clinton’s campaign. For example the proposition said that Clinton’s background was a good indicator of her future decisions and that inventive is based off of situated. The opposition rebuttal included the argument that situated is only a platform and the way she speaks now and the narrative that is created is more important is current predicament of the race. The also debated on party allegiance and the factors that play into that. The proposition argued that depending on your political party, you bring different situated ethos while the opposition debated that especially in this election, using examples of the split Republican
There is a controversial issue in America, and that issue is on gun control. One side wants to tighten down on the gun control laws. While the other side wants to leave gun control be or loosen it up. These two sides are the democrats and the republicans. In this essay, I will be comparing the many differences between the republican view on gun control and the democrat view on gun control.
Decades ago, a debate over what kind of nation America is roiled the conservative movement.
The NASW and I would share similar opinions with this statement if it were not for the word, sometimes. According to the NASW policy statement on capital punishment and the death penalty (2012), “capital punishment and death penalty undermine the ability of professional social workers working within the criminal justice system to enhance a defendant or convicted client’s capacity and opportunity for ongoing change” (p.40). It’s my belief that in some cases where an individual is a monstrous criminal, has acknowledged guilt or the evidence supporting guilt is overwhelming the death penalty is appropriate. I am referring to such criminals as Son of Sam, Jeffry Dahmer and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to name a few. These men have no chance of being paroled, it’s well established through evidence and confession that they are not innocent and received a wrong conviction and rehabilitation through the efforts of the best well trained social worker will not enhance their capacity to change.
Have you ever been so desperate that you were willing to give up? Alfred is seventeen year old boy who dropped out from high school. Alfred works at a grocery store and hangs out with street kids. Alfred begins to realize that he needs to do something he decided that he will be a Contender. He goes to Donatelli's gym to start his training. Donatelli is a very important person to Alfred throughout the story. He also gets good advice from him and learns a good important lesson.
The perspective of the student’s community members has an impact on his or her success. Many of the student’s elders have experienced or heard the stories of the “Indian Boarding Schools” so there is mistrust on their part. The student may need to start developing a more independent way of thinking before he or she even enters college to break free from potential negative views of the higher education system. (Schooler, 2014)
The literature review addresses the following question: Does social class inequality affect higher education? The theoretical paradigm that is considered for this question is the Critical paradigm, in which is mainly qualitative and inductive. Critical paradigm is appropriate to answer this particular question because it involves inductive reasoning that begins from a specific observation to a more generalize. The paradigm also looks at how people are at a disadvantage when it comes to obtaining a higher education and incorporates observations and interviews that cultivate a conversation and the interviewee’s reflection. By interviewing people in different social classes and asking how it affects their education, researchers are able to identify the affects social class has on higher education.
The facts to this are that FOX news channel is notorious for being a conservative news channel. They report one sided toward conservative views and arguing against the liberal side on a regular basis. The slogan “fair and balanced” is not a good representation of words, which simply describe what the news channel gives their viewers. It would make much more sense for the station to take Haddock’s advice and change the slogan to something like “perspective” that better describes the station. FOX news is not giving “fair and balanced” information to their viewers but rather they are showing them the “perspective” of the conservative side.
Compensation for anything that was broken or default has always been an answer to consumers to get what they wanted. However, that is a different case when a life is involved. Most would assume that a large amount of money is given to the spouse and children to hold a steady life. There are even more steps in receiving compensation for a loved one. In recent news, lives have been lost from November 12th to 13th. Now, an important factor is placed if it is applied to the incidents. How will they be compensated, how will the amount be deducted for the lives that were lost in those twenty-four hours. One’s wealth and position should not determine the value placed on their lives because all humans are valued equally.
A few disadvantages of India’s social system are that Religion, caste, and language are major determinants of social organizations. According to the US Department of State-Background Notes website, even though the government has declared the caste system as illegal, it still has a presence in occupational and societal hierarchies (The Office of Electronic Information, Bureau of Public Affairs, 2010).
For this, educational institutes view diversity as “as an essential resource for optimizing teaching and learning.” (Maruyama, Moreno, 9) for it enriches educational experiences by making us more of critical thinkers who judge based on character quality and of ones who could effectively communicate with people of different backgrounds thus strengthening communities and workplaces. Also, it is beneficial in sustaining the nation's prosperity in modern-day terms of diversity and differences. (On The Importance of Diversity in Higher Education). A research sates that elementary through high school students benefits more when they are in a diverse environment primary at school for they are then well exposed to people who are different from them, they learn to function and appreciate other cultures better, and are furthermost, well equipped for their future as community leaders and workers. In order to expand institutional diversity, many institutes (High schools, universities and colleges) are engaged in such activities of recruitment of underrepresented students, mentoring and tutoring programs, need-based financial aid scholarships and race-sensitive admission policies for these tools are indispensable to achieve a diverse environment. (Maruyama, Moreno, 9). Some of these race-inclusive activities were acknowledged by the Supreme Court’s 8 to 1 ruling in 1978 Regents of the University of
There was a clear division between the rich and the poor, the white and the people of color. Holding somewhere from 400-500-students, they offered limited A.P. and honor courses, sport, clubs and counselors. However, all of these resources were created for the daughters and sons of white farmers, and if space permitted, we people of color were allowed to apply. Applying for such courses included essays, interviews, and transcripts as a way to prove our capacities and worth to partake in such opportunities. As professor Abrego stated, this is how hegemony does, it “shifts”, and tries to incorporate new populations into their institutions, yet with the intentions of maintaining the same power relations (Lecture 2/3/2016). In this case, those at the top were willing to open the door for the underserved, but imposed extra requirement to discourage them those “inferior” ones, in other words it was academic profiling. Nonetheless, the other side of the school had high rates of substitute teachers, lacks preparatory classes, and has police officer monitoring student’s actions. Just like mentioned in Rios’ book “Punished,” these young individuals were exposed to a system that was setting them up to
