Metamorphosis, everyone goes through it. A caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, a seed into a flower, a girl into a woman. The inescapable change which every girl experiences as she becomes a woman is a natural phenomenon. Words cannot express all that a girl feels when she is going through physical and emotional changes. The power spirals from within as she is submerged into the primary indications of her womanhood. As a young girl, I struggled against a misogynistic society and the ideals it tried to force upon me. I experienced series of awakenings, each changing me drastically and leading her further down my path of self- discovery. In nature the equivalent of this transition of form and internal evolution is my metamorphosis.i Metamorphosis is a process of transformation from an immature form to an adult. Growing up in the middle east, I struggled to characterize myself in a society that believes a girl should remain devout and ethical. The society I grew up in encourages women to remain the caretakers of the households. They are typically expected to maintain the home, care for children, and hold a job in contribution to the family. Majority of women typically settled for this role. I was socially awkward teenager and I had extremely difficult time trying to fit in. As I enter into the adolescence stage, I had an identity crisis. …show more content…
After all, when life throws you a prestigious summer fashion internship, you take it. I had my doubts as the glass elevator scaled twenty stories to the roof but then once I saw the view I knew this is exactly where I belong. It breathed new life into me and inspired me to work hard. It taught me to live with an open mind. Why don't we choose our own authentic role models and true images for girls and women as we redefine our own greatest vision of womanhood? I was blindfolded by fears and paralyzed by the old wounds that kept me from experiencing life to the
The process of transitioning into the opposite sex has made leaps and bounds over the last twenty years. Social transition is a more traditional approach to the transition process. Social transition is modifying how you are seen by society by dressing like the opposite sex, using opposite sex pronouns, acting in such a way that matches your gender identity, etc. Next is legal transition, this is when a person changes legal documents or records to identify with their gender identity. Lastly is a medical transition, this is when the body is physically changed through hormone therapy and/or surgery. (“One Step at a Time”, 2015)

The longer story The Metamorphosis, first published in 1971, was written by Franz Kafka. He was born in Prague in 1883 and lived until 1924, and he has written many other stories along with The Metamorphosis. The Metamorphosis appears to be a fantastic piece. After reading The Metamorphosis, I do believe that there are many similarities between magical realism and fantastic literature. Kafka showed many fantastic issues in The Metamorphosis.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is a novel that centers on the theme of alienation. When Gregor turns into a bug, he is estranged from almost everyone he comes into contact with, except for his sister. As the novel progresses, Gregor’s family, even his sister, begin to see Gregor as someone completely different and feel burdened by him. When he dies in his room, they seem oddly excited and begin to move on with their lives. The physical and mental death of Gregor in The Metamorphosis reinforces the theme of alienation.
Gender dysphoria is the formal diagnosis for people who experience distress over their assigned physical sex and/or societal gender. People who suffer from this are colloquially called trans men (female to male) and trans women (male to female) respectively. Often, a trans person will elect to undergo medical transitioning to better align their physical body with their mind. As one can expect, transitioning is an arduous process which can include a plethora of medical treatments, such as hormone replacement therapy, mastectomy / breast augmentation, masculinization / feminization facial surgeries, hysterectomy, etc. Trans people who physically transition are said to be transsexual, due to the change of their physical sex instead of simply the change of how they present themselves. Transitioning is often seen as the pentacle of a trans person’s life, and it is a significant, political issue in the LGBT community.
These two approaches uncover an epistemic tension between their differing meanings of gender, transition, transgender identities and their subsequent bodies. For those who subscribe to the early tenets of Benjamin’s medical approach, transition is a demarcated process meant to stabilize a congenital gender identity which, through a misalignment between an organic sense of self and one’s physicality, becomes unstable and manifests as dysphoria. For those who adhere to the later social-approach, transition is an ongoing experience that highlights gender’s fluid dynamics and relocates agency and autonomy from State institutions and group hierarchies to the individuals themselves.
A major theme that is demonstrated throughout The Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka, is the idea of the loss of humanity. This is demonstrated through Gregor’s transformation into a cockroach. Any human being would resent the idea of being compared to a cockroach, mainly because it is one of the farthest things from being humane. As a Family and Human studies major, throughout my classes, I have been introduced to many different theories that relate to the various aspects of a human being. Because there are so many different factors that can impact the numerous areas that make up the humanity of a person, it is a complicated subject. Many of the issues that Gregor struggles with throughout the story correspond with issues that humans face on a daily basis. The symptoms that result from Gregor’s problems are comparable to those of any person struggling with similar matters. A few of these issues include a state of denial, rejection, and alienation.
The Metamorphosis can be analyzed in many different ways. One way that could be looked into is why exactly Gregor is turned into an insect. There are many things that he could have changed into, like a monkey or a bird for example. But Kafka makes it obvious that Gregor is a bug although he never says what kind. Bugs can be, more or less, controlled, considered useless, and gross. To call a person a bug means they can bend easily to another’s will and are expendable. Gregor should have been on the five o’clock train but since he misses it he thinks about how the massagers would have been waiting for the same train and noticed that Gregor wasn’t there that he would have gone to tell someone directly. While he was still trying to get up a few hours later he noted that someone would be coming soon to check on him and at that moment the doorbell rings to revealed that the office manager himself has come to Gergor’s house. This shows that there are many people in his office that watch his every move, and can even cause him to be fired just because he doesn’t show up to work one day. The office manager tries to make Gregor feel guilty about staying in room and making his parents worry about him, all to get Gregor to go to work. But as soon as Gregor shows himself the office manager backs away and leaves. Telling the whole family right away that he has lost his job.
Starting at a very young age, I’ve been labeled by society. When I was born, no one focused on the idea of what I would turn out to be. Instead, they focused on putting me in fluffy, pink outfits and imprinting me with femininity. They focused on showing me Disney movies with female leads that depended on men to save them and whisk them away to a life of luxury. There was a strong
Devor, wrote an article called “Becoming Members of Society: Learning the Social Meanings of Gender” and is explains the facts that gender identity is a lifelong process and one does not particularly understand who they are until a certain age. Once they are able to recognize which gender is which, not by their physical appearance, but by what is inside of them, they then know themselves. He also establishes three words “I”, “Me”, and “Self” (Devor 389-390). The “I” represents what you think of yourself. The “Me” represents how society thinks of you. The “Self” represents the balance union of the two. If a person is able to live with “I” and “Me” equally, then, and only then, will they accept
My gender was often questioned by my traits after this. People often called me like a "boy in a dress". This was followed by individuals making connections to my sexuality. With outside sources telling me that I wasn 't like “a real girl” yet, “too girly” to be a boy from males I struggled with the terms feminine and masculine as well as boy and girl. I never identified myself as either feminine or masculine nor female or male. I just always figured that was how you were born and you chose for yourself. I always just viewed myself as just a human, just Mounia. My experience with having my traits analyzed by others relates to that of Leslie Feinberg in Feinberg’s work “We Are All Works in Progress” (1998).

When I was adolescent, I was strongly influenced by my cognitive development, experiences and people around me. First, I experienced typical psychological reactions which adolescences are likely to have: I had a lot of experiments; I had imaginably audience; and I experienced identity crisis. I was a person who had a lot of experiments. Because I was a late bloomer, I was not as feminine as other girls. However, I thought that I should behave more feminine to be an adult. Therefore, I suddenly changed my behaviors. For examples, I changed the way to talk and wear: I used the woman like way to talk and wore very feminine clothes. These experiments often surprised and confused people around me. Naturally, these changes did not last
