Mexican American and Puerto Rican Culture and Case Studies The many Hispanic cultures that now make up much of the United States have experienced incompetence in healthcare providers relating to their values (Purnell & Paulanka, 2013). Mexican Americans place a high level of importance on their work and work ethic, making them important members of the working communities in the United States. Puerto Ricans share many values with Mexican Americans, but have different values, such as family and familial roles. Together, Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans make up a large part of the United States whose values should be understood and respected.
Mexican American Culture and Case Study Mexican Americans have many values that make them important, contributing individuals in the United States, such as their work ethic. According to Purnell & Paulanka, Mexican Americans place a high level of importance on their work, including the Gaborra family. The Gaborra family displays examples of how Mexican Americans work despite remaining in poverty. Pablo is able to speak enough English to get by in daily life, but Olga only knows a few words in English, which limits safe communication with healthcare providers. To help bridge communication gabs, healthcare providers should use interpreters and repeat phrases for clarity, due to many Spanish words having multiple meanings (Purnell & Paulanka, 2013). Healthcare providers should approach Mexican Americans with respect and use direct questions (Purnell & Paulanka, 2013). Since Olga does not wish to take the free English courses that are provided in the community, healthcare providers should respect her choice and offer interpreter services to eliminate room for potential
