My side of the family is mexican and I can’t recall my side of the family having a mexican christmas dinner. However since we have Christmas Eve and day at my grandma’s house we have an Italian style dinner. My Nana and her prepare the food from scratch, and since it’s Christmas Eve they prepare a seafood dinner. They make regular seafood like octopus, lobster tails, fried shrimp, and other fish if they please. My sister and I love fried shrimp, but as for my mother she does not love any kind of seafood. So she always hears this from someone at some point, “Your favorite!” Mother then gets this smile from ear to ear because she knew she was going to hear that. When prevening arrives we get into the car and drive 5 blocks up the street to
Do you like ordering chicken enchiladas at your favorite Mexican restaurant? This meal is not difficult to make at home, but what do you do when you crave enchiladas when camping. The solution is to use a hot campfire to make dutch oven enchiladas.
On February 23, 1836, a Mexican force led by General Santa Anna began a siege of the fort. The Alamo’s 200 defenders fought for 13 days before the Mexicans won. Santa Anna ordered his men to take no prisoners and only a small handful of the Texans were spared. It’s said that Bowie fought from his deathbed, he was also eventually killed.
Johnson’s article tells the story of “how ethnic Mexican ideas and practices subverted U.S. racial practices” through the early Mexican civil rights movements and the effort of LULAC (419). Johnson guides the reader on a journey through the ideas, influences, and actions of LULAC in the early 20th century. While the incorporation of environmental factors would contribute to a better understanding of the narrative, they are nonessential as they digress from Johnson’s chief point. Johnson careful picks where to lead the reader in order to showcase the upbringing of the moment, not deviating from his
It is a known fact that every human being communicates through language, but perhaps a little known fact that we communicate even through the food we eat. We communicate through food all the meanings that we assign and attribute to our culture, and consequently to our identity as well. Food is not only nourishment for our bodies, but a symbol of where we come from. In order to understand the basic function of food as a necessity not only for our survival, we must look to politics, power, identity, and culture.
Growing up in a big family my parents always had a reason to throw family parties. Everybody would always be looking forward to the food, all the families that would come would go all out and bring their best homemade dish like tamales, taquitos, menudo and many more delicious dishes. Mexican families are always so welcoming and always want you to try new things and also to have a big appetite. Being a little kid and not knowing better I would always eat for days. It wasn't until I realized that I would always be over eating which is not healthy at all. I learned that mexican families always want to over feed their kids and family members. Every once in awhile when I do go to family parties I always prepare myself to not eat as much because
All over the world there are many features that make up a culture. Culture can be defined as the characteristics, attitudes, knowledge and beliefs of a group of people, relating to language, cuisine, religion, interaction, lifestyle, and more which is learned through socialization. These aspects of cultures are what distinguishes it from others. It is interesting to explore and learn about new cultures. I will be focusing on the Mexican culture, their religion, death, family life, weddings and ….
Many non-Hispanic people tend to think that all Hispanics are Mexican. Mexicans make up almost two thirds of the Hispanic population in the United States, but that does not mean that there is any shortage in diversity among Hispanics. Being Hispanic makes it easy for me to identify the differences in Latin America culture. Hispanics are one of the most racially diverse ethnic groups in the world. Hispanics are light skinned, black with afro textured hair, Indigenous, Asian, Spanish, German, and Italian.

Hispanic heritage is an important concept that surrounds my entire life. I have lived in Colombia until I turned fourteen years old. Colombia is a beautiful country in South America and consist of mostly Hispanic individuals. This culture has been important in my life because it helps define who I am and how I view the world. It was not until I moved to the United States that I began to become more aware of different ethnic groups. I grew up in a city where everyone was the same, looked the same and had the same cultural behaviors in our country.
Coming from a Hispanic culture background has taught me a lot of many different values. I was born and raised on a border town between Texas and Mexico. The culture of Mexican-American has impacted many people on both sides of the border.
On the fourth Thursday of every November, families gather together to spend a day filled with food and laughter. Thanksgiving celebrates the day the settlers and the Native Americans enjoyed their first meal together. However, my parents were both raised in Mexico and never had a typical yearly Thanksgiving celebration. Despite my parents home being Mexico, they started a family in America and decided to teach their children about both of the places they come from. A compromise between American and Mexican traditions formed and served as a family tradition until last year. A year ago, my family ate a Thanksgiving meal at my sister's parent-in-laws house.
Throughout my life, being Hispanic has always meant family and unity. I was born into a Mexican family on my mother's side; we would often gather together for family parties, events, and holidays. Our lives are intertwined with each other; if something significant happened to an individual in the family, a majority of the family would be involved. My family usually gathers together to celebrate major holidays, but this past year I witnessed relatives assembling during a difficult farewell.
Mexican cuisine is a style of food that originates in Mexico. It is known for its varied flavors, colorful decoration, and variety of spices and ingredients, many of which are native to the country. What makes a meal distinctly Mexican, of course, are the lively seasonings. Not all Mexican recipes are fiery, though; while renowned for their heat, many subtle and intriguing spice combinations are also found in Mexican fare.
The world was not open to the idea of Hispanic cuisine, due to racism being the cause for international foods not being introduced in America. Immigrants as well as other ethnic groups were introduced to American culture. In1935 an immigrant from Spain named Prudencio Unanue became the founder of a small company called Goya. He wanted to bring the taste of Spanish traditional style to America, simply to give those Latin culture familiarities from back home. His idea was to expand his brand on a global scale. In the news Article Carribean Business, "Unanue states that the food industry is much more than a business it is a responsibility" (Caribbean Business Vol 39). Goya has expanded their company and moved their branch to Secaucus New Jersey,
Growing up I always enjoyed going to Mexican restaurants. I had always believed that is what Mexican food was. Large portions to one person of mainly beans, yellow rice, with something in a tortilla. In my current relationship, with a lovely man from Sinaloa, Mexico, I found that what I thought was, in fact, not true. There’s a whole lot more to the food of Mexico that I had never really thought about. In the Sinaloa region the food isn’t served in a large portion to one person, it's cooked in large portions to feed a larger family. Now the basic breakfast is eggs, homemade beans, cut up hot dogs, with panela cheese topped with ketchup. You then either eat with a fork or more typically torn up tortilla to scoop up the breakfast. Lunch you'll
