Most Mexican food is very spicy because it contains “chili” that has a strong hot flavor. For example most dishes are called “chile con carne” (meat with chili). It is a stew with pieces of meat and with vegetables all mixed together with a hot Chili sauce. Chilies are a main ingredient in Mexican cooking but not all Mexican food is spicy even with many recipes including chilies. While most of food is spicy not all of them are. For example, Mexican desserts are not spicy but instead really sweet. Just thinking about the delicious desserts makes my mouth water. It is becomes a tradition that on my birthday I have a tasty cheese flan. A pastel that it hard to avoid is “chocoflan” which is a combination of both chocolate and flan. I’m also additive to “bunuelos” which is deep fried dough with sugar. Another tasty dessert is “Rosca De Reyes” which is a traditional oval cake prepared in December. One of my favorite desserts is “arroz con leche” which is rice pudding. It’s a delicious warm dessert especially if it made with cinnamon and if it is homemade. Another mouthwatering dessert is “pan dulce” also known as sweet bread. Every time I go to the bakery with my parents I like buying the vanilla or chocolate “conchas” which is shaped as a seashell pastries. The sweetest dessert must be “dulce de leche” which is perfect when I have a sweet tooth. The most popular dessert in Mexico and a yummy one is the

My parents have always introduced me to all types of food. The type of food I eat is one of the ways that I feel closely ties me to the mexican side of my culture. Mexican food is my favorite. I love how spicy it can be. One tradition
Tradition has been said to mirror a way of life. Observation has concluded that participants in tradition “actively construct as well as reflect culture and community” (Sacks 275). For most people in the 21st century, tradition only reveals itself during special times or certain seasons. For others it is simply a way of life. The foodways of Mexicans and Native Americans are of particular interest in this study because of the food that grew from necessity and is maintained as sacred or reserved for only special occasions. The tamale is one such food. Significantly changed and altered throughout history it has remained a
“Food is a central activity of mankind and one of the single most significant trademarks of a culture”. (Kurlansky, 2002) This quote perfectly sums up the importance of food when it comes to culture. I have had the privilege of being born into a Hispanic background. The Hispanic culture is rich with traditions, language, music, literature, but most importantly, cuisine.
My immediate family built the basis for my knowledge of food with the atmosphere they created by gathering different descendants of my family to indulge on the cuisine of our cultural
In Tamales or Timbales: Cuisine and the Formation of Mexican National Identity, Pilcher also looks to the history of Mexico and national identity through cuisine. Historically, Mexico is a conquered nation even after reaching independence in 1821. And while Mexico is a country with heavy influence from Europe, it has created its own national identity through foods with the use of Spanish, indigenous, and French ingredients. The elites believed that Mexico would only advance and progress when they abandoned Native American techniques and adopted the European
I was born and raised in the Philippines. I identify myself with the Filipino culture. I chose to learn about the Mexican culture, so I have interviewed my coworker. The interview was focused on the meaning of food in their culture and its impact on their health.
The hispanic community has influenced me in a positive way. Keeping the family close and always having good relations with one another is important to the culture. That is
Hispanic Americans have a strong tie to their culture and display it in their cuisine. Rice and beans are staples to la familia, together they provide a complete protein, and are inexpensive. Spicy peppers and hot sauce provide antibacterial and digestive health qualities that were imperative to provide healthy meals in Mexico because the water supply isn’t guaranteed to be safe for drinking. Historically, many tomato products were introduced to the United States by Mexico, including burritos, tacos, other Mexican cuisine and even ketchup (Sowell, 1981).
Mexican culture dates far back as the 13th century. This is when the Aztecs were prevalent in northern mexico. Aztecs were a people who were all about war and honor. They made many enemies going to war with smaller tribes and brutally killed their enemies. In the 16th century the Aztecs Empire crumbled due to the invasion led by Hernan Cortez. Disease, superior weapons, and aid of the Aztec’s enemies were all contributing factors to the Aztecs downfall. Fast forward September 16th 1810 when Mexico gained its independence from Spain Mexico's identity started to develop. Mexican culture is defined by many things, its food, its language, its clothing, its art. However, There is one aspect that defines Mexican culture and that is family life. Mexicans have a very rich family life that defines the culture. The way that family is organized and the way each member acts can be traced back to the very beginning. It's a mixture of the indigenous peoples culture as well as the Spaniards culture. The indigenous peoples pass on their ideas of honor and machismo and the Spaniards pass on their ideas of catholicism, and family value and structure. I fit into this because I grew up on these ideas and my family still practices some of these ideas today.
Certain cultures are thought of when certain foods are mentioned; so, you could say that your culture is what influences your traditional food. However, many “traditional” ethnic restaurants in America are, in fact, “Americanized”. With this being said, people do not get to experience the true culture that goes behind the food. Food for the Soul will change this because it will include immigrants from their countries who have been taught how to cook their traditional meals. This will open up people’s minds and teach them about the different cultures. “[F]ood is the physical
Hispanic Heritage is an important concept that surrounds my entire life. Mexico is a wonderful and beautiful country. This culture has been important in my life because it helps me define who I am and how I view the world in many ways. At the age of 16 my parents crossed over the border to the U.S in order to give a better life to me and my siblings. They came at different times my mom came with my grandma then later on that year my dad came with his parents. My parents didn't know any english to start off just spanish but time passed and my parents learned and understood english. They came over with nothing, my dad would have sleepless nights worrying about what their next meal will be. Till this day both my parents are hard workers, I appreciate and love them for everything they have done. I fit into the Hispanic community by
Culture includes religion, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and many other aspects. Food is another main part of culture and that includes how we sit at the table and our dietary needs. Hispanics and Americans are the two largest ethnic groups in America. This means both of these groups had to become accustomed to the culture of one another. One very immense difference and similarity between Hispanics and Americans is food.
The most important and frequently used herbs and spices in Mexican cuisine are chilli powder, oregano, cilantro, epazote, cinnamon, and cocoa. Chipotle, a smoke-dried jalapeño chilli, is also common in Mexican cuisine. Many Mexican dishes also contain garlic and onions.
Have you thought of how many varieties of cultures you have? All of your customs are unique and is formed in your activities that you adore. Everyone has a culture but is manifested in many ways. According to the text “ What is Cultural Identity” Trumbull and Pacheco declares that you can imagine culture as invisible webs composed of values, beliefs, ideas about appropriate behavior, and socially constructed truths (springboard 2010). Traditions define our ethnic backgrounds with many constructed acts to the meaning of our lives. Cultural Traits govern our direct perspectives. Two cultural traits that will be described in this essay is language and foods.
