Was the United States Justified in Going to War With Mexico?
Mexico attacking America was NOT America’s fault! On April 24th, 1836 Mexican troops attacked a party of 63 Americans in an effort to “protect” their borders. All this accomplished was the deaths of 16 innocent soldiers and fueling a flame of war. The soldiers that were on the border were extending the US’s protection to Texas when she wanted to annex herself with the US. Although many agreed with America declaring war was a good idea there were also many that disagreed with it. So, did the United States have a good reason to wage war on Mexico? The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because of the Manifest Destiny, the US already had land claims, and Mexico took

According to John L. O'Sullivan from “Annexation” he states that “the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence [God] for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war because the population in the US is increasing rapidly so god gave the US the land to expand so it rightfully belongs to them. A second reason the Mexican War was justified is that the US already had struck claims onto Californian lands. Once again according to Sullivan he states that, “the Anglo-Saxon foot is already on [California’s] borders…” and “Mexico never can exert any real governmental authority over such a country.” This evidence expresses that the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because the US settlers were already on Californian lands and had claimed it as their own Mexico could not extend any real authority over it to take control. The last and final reason the Mexican War was justified is that the Mexicans had attacked the US first. According to Jesus Velasco-Marquez from “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States” he states, “in the eyes of the [Mexican] government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico.” This evidence
The war had ended with a treaty called “The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo,” but it still caused unnecessary bloodshed upon Mexico and the states. ] The U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico because Mexico had the right to protect their land, and they only wanted the
One reason the Mexican War was not justified was because America pretty much stole Texas and other parts of the southwest from Mexico. A lot of Americans were settling in Texas before the war. “At this period,
Manifest Destiny were the words heard around America. The United States had doubled its land in the Louisiana Purchase and they wanted to keep expanding because they believed it was “allotted by Providence[God]” (Doc A) to stretch from “sea to shining sea.” After the Texas revolution, the United States was presented with the opportunity of annexing Texas and getting land. The president at the time was Polk, who also had his eyes set for California.
One reason that the Mexican-American war was not justified is that the Americans took land from Mexico. The annexation of Texas is an example of America taking land, stated in Document C. That was very wrong of the U.S to do at the time due to security and legal reasons for Mexico. Then Americans tried to take more land from Mexico by sending troops to near the Rio Grande River. As a security measure, the Mexicans decided to attack the American soldiers, killing 16 of the Americans. This shows that Americans were not justified for going to war with Mexico because Americans decided to send soldiers to invade the undisputed part of land between Texas and Mexico.
In the first place, the Mexican War was not justified was because the U.S not having the right to take Mexico's land that was supposed to be theirs. In ¨Annexation¨ , John L. O'Sullivan stated that ¨Mexico can never exert any real government authority over such a country..¨ Mexico does not have any experience with controlling such a big area. He also stated that ¨.. Checking the fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.¨ this means that the U.S.
The shots that killed and injured sixteen U.S. soldiers finally gave President Polk of the United States “reason” to go to war with Mexico. The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because the United States provoked Mexico’s “attack” and only took the land for their development (which they did unlawfully).
was not justified in going to war with Mexico because Mexico did not wrong America and was only thinking of self-defense. *Document C is a magazine article called “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” from the magazine Voices of Mexico. The document shares details from the Mexican point of view of the war, written by Jesus Velasco-Marquez. * According to Document C, “In the eyes of the (Mexican) government, the mobilization of the U.S. army was an outright attack on Mexico…. As a consequence, the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the border…”
One reason the Mexican War was unjustified was because the US broke their laws. A way we broke their laws were by bringing slaves across though they did not allow it. “Slaveholders crossed the Sabine[river between Louisiana and Texas] with their slaves, in defiance of the Mexican ordinance of freedom.”{Doc.D Paragraph 3} Though Mexico had abolished slaves we ignored them and brought them with us anyway. "...Mexico decreed the abolition of human slavery…”{Doc. D Paragraph 1} This evidence shows the US was unjustified in going to war because the US has gone too far with trying to show Mexico with who deserved the land. Though we want the disputed territory to enlarge our nation we do not deserve the land because we broke laws. Mexico only wanted the land to make up for land they had lost early on.
In the 19th century, America wanted to expand its territory and Mexico was the only obstacle in the way of this goal. Due to the tension between Mexico and the United States, war seemed to be the only way to achieve the dream of expansion. The Mexican War has been said to be unjustifiable and an unprovoked war of aggression. The war was unjustifiable undertaking by the U.S. government because it was unconstitutional and based on deceit even though it did in fact serve the national interest of the United States.
While it is understandable that others may thinks America was justified to go to war with Mexico most of the time when America had a reason was because Mexico had not gotten all of the necessary details. So America wouldn’t be justified. Main reasons America had started the war was because of Manifest Destiny, Americans did not want to abide Mexican law, and Americans, government and all, were disrespecting Mexico, whether it was by breaking laws or insulting their government behind Mexico’s back. People wonder why this so important, well the answer to that is simple. The argument is important because if America had not gotten western land then states such as California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona would either be apart of other countries or still part of Mexico. Either way the matter is important, but is not something worth fighting over because as they say: it’s
“Other nations have hostile against us, hampering our power, limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent”(Doc A Para 2). United States were fighting over Mexican to reclaim Texas to be part of the country. In July 1845, John L. O’Sullivan feels like the US should annexing Texas and California (Doc A Para 1). He thought that the Mexicans were dumb because they didn’t have any government authority over a country. The Mexico wanted to expand their lands. The invasion took place in April 24th when sixteen American were killed and wounded (Doc B Para 4). The argument is Americans justified in going to war with Mexico. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because territory, slaves, and invasion.
The Mexican-American War was incorrectly named; it was not simply Americans vs Mexicans, but a war between opinions. America’s war with Mexico: a war for land, for the sake of Manifest Destiny, or perhaps, a war to be started and ended in victory by… a thief. This war was supported and criticized by Americans and Mexicans alike. Manifest Destiny was a belief that it was God’s Plan to for America to expand to the Pacific Ocean, and a very controversial belief, at that. Before this war of opinions, the US already created a tense relationship with its neighbor by providing aid to the Texas Rebellion, and later annexing Texas. The United States was not Justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was signed over, with no extra land, America was obviously itching to go to war, and settlers agreed to become Mexican citizens in the first place
One reason the Mexican War was justified was because of manifest destiny. Manifest destiny mean in the 19th century United States was destined to, stretch
“The United States had emerged as a modern capitalist nation, and the spirit of nationalism in the country was strong and growing” (Henderson 71). As tensions grew between the Unites States and Mexico, there was a thirst for war. The Unites States declared war with Mexico, because they owned land that Americans desired, resulting in America’s fulfillment of achieving their philosophy of “Manifest Destiny”. The blood boil of both countries caused a lot of bloodshed. The dispute lasted for a long two year battle which was for huge amounts of land. The Americans were victorious and claimed new territories from the conflict.
The War with Mexico was unjust because America had no right to invade Mexico, Start war, or incorrectly argue over the borders. “I have said from the start that the United States are the aggressors… We have not one particle of right to be here.” (Colonel Ethan Allen Hitchcock, Spring 1846, Source #2.) What Colonel Hitchcock is implying is America had no right to invade Mexican territory and declare war on them. Expansion purposes were not necessary for the United States at the time, But America still believed that they had enough reasoning to invade Mexico. Mexico also did not need to be the target for expansion. America was also claimed to be the one to start the War with Mexico and is responsible for the problems that occurred during the
