Functional Areas of Business - Marketing and Human Resources
The MBA overview highlights several areas of business that are studied in the MBA program at University of Phoenix. Two of the functional areas of business that appeal to me are marketing and human resources. This paper will review these two business functions, and provide an explanation of the management role in each area.

The HR department is still in a state of change, and will become more important in the future as leaders of organizations recognize more and more the importance of HR as a strategic partner. From personal experience as the Director of Employee Services for a large healthcare organization, I feel the job as a manager in human resources is extremely rewarding, yet there is a high level of stress associated with it. In order to be a successful HR manager or director, you must be an expert in all areas of the human resources function. As a manager in a large organization, you will have many HR specialists working for you who specialize in one or more HR areas. In a smaller company, the HR manager may be responsible for all areas encompassing HR. Ulrich et. al. (2012) identify six fundamental competency domains that HR professionals must demonstrate to impact business performance. These competencies are as follows: Strategic positioner, capability builder, change champion, human resource innovator and integrator, technology proponent and credible activist. The authors go on to explain that HR professionals think and act from the outside/in (strategic positioner), and are able to translate external business trends into internal decisions and actions. The American Marketing Association defines marketing as "an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders". (2005) Simply put, marketing is the process by which businesses assess the needs and desires of consumers in order to provide products and/or services to meet those needs in the most efficient and cost effective manner. Truly effective marketers do market research in an effort to understand their target market and create marketing strategies based on the characterization of those in the target area.
Dr. Ulrich goes on to support the need for HR in today’s business world. He feels that there are 5 critical challenges that businesses face: Globalization, profitability through growth, technology, intellectual capital, and change (Ulrich 126). Conversely, these things do not matter on a competitive scale. All businesses need these things to survive, but they can be attained and copied. The only competitive weapon left is organization (Ulrich 127). That is where Ulrich believes HR plays its most vital role. The differences between the leading businesses in their respective markets is their organization. Top-tier businesses are run efficiently with good HR relations. For businesses to take the next step towards maximizing their operations, they must change the culture surrounding HR and train their HR teams to become sufficient in promoting higher employee morale.
