Quality Assurance (QA) can be defined as those activities that contribute to designing, mentoring and the improvement of quality healthcare. In defining the quality we need to develop the standards that will be used to measure the effect of the quality of work we are striving towards. The standards does not have to be clinical it can be administrative, good standards are usually reliable, realistic clear and valid. In focusing on the process and the systems used to provide care to the patients, I would look at both inputs and outcomes. Inputs such as suggestions can come from the patients. The focus on Quality assessment is a process that the health facility goes through to obtain accreditation. The company that does this for the health industry is Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). There are other American –based healthcare accreditation organizations that work with many hospitals and healthcare facilities such as the American osteopathic Association (AOA), the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc. (ACHC), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). Quality assurance programs are very important to hospitals or healthcare facilities management simply because they will have to pay out less in unnecessary bills that could have been prevented if the strict program is in place and the facility workers actually adhere to them. The quality program has a major effect on the policies of the organization in that they understand that if the policies are implemented with a quality assurance perspective in mind it will most likely be followed to avoid law suits.
