Six years prior to Lauren’s rescuing, the young girl encountered obscene abuse from her mother and stepfather. Barbara and her husband, Kenneth, left her malnourished, and sexually abused by themselves,
Living life within a dysfunctional family and living within a dysfunctional community that had little trust in societal protections left Precious without many normal safeguards that might have prevented some of the years of abuse that she endured. Awareness of Precious’ first pregnancy at the age of twelve, her morbid obesity, her violent outbursts and her inability to read or write were all reasonable cause to suspect that Precious may have been subjected to abuse, neglect.
Barbie Harris is a 50 year old female who came into our shelter this morning. In our initial intake and interview this writer can see that Barbie has brought her only belongs: some clothes, blankets, hygiene products, and her prescriptions. Barbie states that most nights she tries to stay at one of her 3 close friends house, however they have families so she does not stay long (Summers, 2012, p. 245). Other than those nights Barbie states she travels from shelter to shelter, at times sleeping on the cold hard ground. In discussing Barbie’s employment history this writer learns she has been unable to work due to issues with her mental health. Up until coming to the shelter today Barbie has been picking up bottles on Calgary streets to pay for
In the case of Angelique Lyn Lavelle was acquitted by the jury. I believe she was guilty of the crime even though her partner abused her and as testified in the case by Dr. Shane that was hired by the defense stated that Lavelle was characterized as a battered women based on his experience. To some extent this is true however, we have learned that sometimes that battered women are ashamed to tell others of their abuse and sometimes they are so much in love with that person that they keep going back to them
Still more accusations surface over the abuse Amber heard endured while being married to Johnny Depp. The things she claims that Johnny did to her seem to grow bigger and more outlandish as time goes on, according to Radar Online, June 2, 2016. This time, Amber accused Johnny of holding a pillow over her head as he tried to suffocate her.
In all cases of abuse priority must be given to ensuring the safety and care of the vulnerable individual. Listen carefully to what you have be told and even it sounds fanciful do not dismiss it. Reassure the abused person, try to understand what may have happened, but do not interrogate the person or suggest you do not believe
In the interview, I asked Amanda to tell me a story about an individual who came from the life of prostitution and reached out for help from Safe Embrace. She told me the story of a victim who didn’t even identify herself as being a victim at first. Safe Embrace helped her not only realize she was a victim and that she could absolutely benefit from the services they provided but also they helped her in testifying against her pimp. They helped prepare her for not only the court procedural aspects that she would have to endure but also any psychological repercussions that testifying could bring about. She did very well throughout that process and was successful in being a member of Safe Embrace’s emergency housing program. She got her kids back and entered an apartment that she is currently thriving in. This individual is a success story of theirs and even through all the experiences she had when first
No girl would ever imagine being homeless at seventeen years old. Well, Jane Coleman couldn’t wait to get out of her explosive home because being homeless would be much better than having to live with her mother and her boyfriend. Jane’s mother met Mike at a bar down the street in Jersey City, New Jersey. Mike lived with the Coleman family after two months of them dating. After a week, Jane learned Mike was an awful drunk. He got violent, and his eyes seemed as if there were no life in them. Mike started abusing Jane’s mother. Jane tried to tell her mother to leave him, but she couldn’t because they needed his income.
It was the last day of July, and as usual, it was pouring rain in the "sunny" state of Florida. The rain dropped quickly, splashing to the ground in loud plops. Julia lifted up her hood and continued her walk down the street, trying to get away from her old foster home as quick as possible. This was a tradition of hers you see. Every time she got tired of a foster home, or if they were just too abusive, she would leave at the end of the month. This had happened five times
Also, her abuse as a child, by her children's father injuries from him and her physical disabilities had lead her to suffering with mental illness as well. She entered the shelter after she had enough and is continuing to go forward with leading her life with out her children father and dealing with her mental issues of abuse as a
Physical and emotional abuse can originate from any source but the majority of the abuse generates from parental or adult figures and is direct toward a timid figure, typically a child. The abuser commonly chooses a more timid recipient because they will be less likely to stand up against the abuser. Physical abuse is maltreatment that involves actual contact between one body part of a person and an other body part of an other person, such as hitting or slapping. Emotional abuse consists of just the opposite: maltreatment that is directed to harming the individual psychologically, such as negative comments or put downs (National Exchange Club Foundation, 2000).
Throughout this work I will relate to a case study. I will provide a definition of abuse using both sociological and psychological perspectives to contribute to our understanding of the causes of abuse. I will define the types, indicators, signs and symptoms of abuse and its impact on families and individuals, identifying factors relevant to the case study, recognising and explaining current legislation making reference to Government reports/inquiries and research into failures to protect from harm and abuse. I will consider the policies and procedures that my work place use and I will identify some statutory and voluntary agencies and their roles in supporting those affected by abuse, relating specifically to the abuse of children.
I think if I was in a situation where I had a friend that was not a relative that was abusing alcohol I would first approach it indirectly. I would bring up someone that was a recovering alcoholic and the steps that they took to overcome the challenge. I would gave their reaction to this topic and see how open they were to talking about alcoholism. Since this person is my friend I would continue to be very delicate with my approach. If the friend seemed open to the idea that they may be struggling with a problem and appeared to want help I would recommend options. These would include limiting places where the consumption of alcohol is an option. Locating meetings, and recommending therapist and sponsors to my friend. I would leave the issue

Much like the human psyche, there are no black and white concepts and no one is the same as their neighbor. As well with abuse cases, they are never the exact same, however there are patterns that emerge in cases which show similar personality traits battered women and their abusers. While outside factors, such as alcohol abuse, are just as common in abuse cases, personality traits are less controllable than these outside influences, and can help categorize the types of abuse and abusers that are present in cases. The batterers exist in multiple subtypes that have been found through research. Using different measures, research has shown that male batterers are more insecurely attached (Buck & colleagues, 2012). This type of attachment is not
