Michael Jackson is arguably one of the most influential musicians of his time. Despite his success, Michael Jackson is no stranger to controversy. Though, few people ask as to whether it's possible to separate an artist from their work; in the sense of recognizing what the artists has done in his own personal life. This is a particular concern since Michael Jackson has influenced numerous individuals over the years. Due to his shortcomings, Michael Jackson remains a controversial figure, but has still altered the music industry in a ways that no other individual has done since. During the mid 80’s Michael Jackson began to suffer from vitiligo, a skin condition that results in the loss of pigment. Although diagnosed with the skin condition (Kolata) and later autopsies after his death indicated that he did suffer from it (Duke), he was still nonetheless accused of skin bleaching as reported by Whitworth of the Telegraph (Whitworth). However, Michael Jackson did have numerous plastic surgery operations which included: chin lifts, nose jobs, cheek implants, lip operations, etc; many of which he admits to in his autobiography (Whitworth). As a result of such operations and his skin condition, many believed that he desired to become “white” (Clarke). As reported by the Daily Mail, there has also been controversy in regards to which “race” should play Michael Jackson in films and other forms of media (Spillett). The Sky TV channel was forced to cancel a program about Michael Jackson when outraged occurred over the casting of Joseph Fiennes, a white British actor (Spillett). However, the most controversial events arouse in 1993 and 2003, when Michael Jackson was accused and tried for child molestation. Without dwelling deep into these cases, there was evidence to support both the prosecution and defence. Although Michael Jackson settled both cases, he was not found guilty in either case due to lack of convincing evidence, according to the jurors and law enforcement (Roland). In fact, all the photos and books that were acquired from the raid on his Neverland ranch had all been purchased legally, were legal to own, and weren't pornographic (Woods). Despite this, a smear attack emerged just before the seventh anniversary of his death and were using this same “evidence” against him, as indicated by the Huffington Post
