HIPPAA is saying no to Skype for patients in Oklahoma Medical Board in a recent case against Thomas Trow, MD. In February 4, 2014 the Oklahoma medical board had some a concerns over the practices of telemedicine and telepsychiatry using Skype to conduct online video appointments and prescribed controlled substances to a patient over the internet. Doctor Trow were prescribing medicine online and never saw the patient in person and ultimately experienced overdose. A Marketing strategy is necessary to develop and implement for all health care organizations. Rush University Medical Center in Chicago learned this lesson in the most difficult circumstances. The leadership assumed the reputation of the facility would be enough to stand up against all other health care facilities in the surrounding area; supplementary publicity or lobbying was necessary. As time passed on, it was very obvious by the drastic decrease in patient census and revenue that something had to change. The implementation of an environmental scan in that particular instance would greatly influence the facility in a positive manner. It is an approach that assists in the process of identifying and recognizing all the marketing elements involved. The first step of the environmental scan is an assessment of the five major environmental forces and trends. Next, evaluate the potential impact on the organization’s target market and adjust the organizations marketing mix strategy as appropriate (Berkowitz, 2011).

Just as the institution is eager to continue embracing the ever-changing world of healthcare and medicine, I too embody this same distinguishing characteristic. Throughout my undergraduate experiences I have learned in order to be a steward and servant of the medical profession one must exercise teamwork, service, empathy, accountability, and optimism; all of which coincide with the tenets that are declared by the Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine culture. 1. I do believe that large pharmaceutical companies as well as doctors prescribing opioid medication should be held partially responsible in cases when patients are over-prescribed drugs. Although they are in no way actually forcing those patients who are over-prescribed these drugs to misuse them and it is ultimately the fault of the individual misusing the medication, they are, however, allowing for the the misuse.In regards to pharmaceutical companies, I think that they should be held responsible for marketing and allowing such drugs available to virtually the mass public opposed to only those that need it in order to increase their profits. When I was exploring medical schools in 2014, I decided to attend discover MUSM day. That day, I was able to experience the culture of the campus and interact with Mercer students that went above and beyond to answer all of questions about Mercer and medicine in general. I believe that my experience that day truly impacted my decision on making Mercer my home. A decision I do not regret. Although the study of medicine is difficult, I am thankful for Mercer and the growth I have achieved during my time here. The Medical University of South Carolina, better known as MUSC has been around 1824.
