Today, less than half a percent of Americans serve in the military, and of that number, about fourteen percent are women. Women have been serving in the United States Navy since 1942 (Saxena, 93). In addition to stating that the Navy is part of the Defense Department, the largest Government agency in the United States, that employs over 2.1 million people, it can be better understood to define the Navy as a seagoing arm of the nation’s military forces (Saxena 11 ,87). The Navy offers various job titles and careers, including microbiology. Within microbiology you investigate the growth, structure, development, and other characteristics of microscopic organisms, including algae, bacteria, and fungi (Choices Planner). Microbiology is just one of the many possible careers featured for the United States Navy. There are specific qualifications to enlist in the United States Navy before basic training. A few examples of some of these qualifications would to be a United States citizen, be willing to serve a minimum of three years, be at least eighteen and no older than forty-one years of age, and be in an exceptional physical condition (America’s Navy). After enlisting and meeting with a recruiter, the enlisted member will attend MEPS, which is short for Military Entrance Processing Station. At MEPS, …show more content…
Some average wages for Navy microbiologists include an annual average wage of around $71,380. One of the highest wages for an experienced microbiologist would be around $121,000 annually (Careers in Microbiology, 17). In Philadelphia, PA for example, the average pay rate at around thirty-eight dollars an hour, with the experienced microbiologist making around fifty-seven to seventy-five dollars an hour. A positive aspect to this specific pay rate is that the amount of money made increases greatly by the level of experience and degree the individual
I believe being a microbiologist would be great for me. I like to use advanced medical and laboratory equipment. I have always wanted to be a doctor, but as a microbiologist I could work in a hospital or a facility and help other people. I
Once you are on active duty you get sent off to basic training, then after that they ship you out every do many months. These trips last only 6 months at a time and in that 6 months your go around the world stopping at ports. This would benefit me due to the fact that I wish to see the world. After talking to a recruiter at Columbia high school, she answered some of my questions about education opportunities if I was to join the forces. She provided me with flyers that had all information that was concerning my education, this is what I found. America's navy will pay 100% or your tuition for courses taken at accredited institutions while off duty. There is no application fee, No tuition deposit, and no test score required for admission. You can choose from more than 6,000 high school, undergraduate and graduate - level correspondence courses available from regionally accredited institutions of independent study. Anything from Astronomy to Zoology, along with everything between. Many colleges and universities recognize Navy training and work experience as college credits. The longer you stay in the Navy, the more you earn toward a degree. You also are provided fee coverage, up to $1,000 per year for books and supplies. You can use this up to 15 years after completing your service commitment. To qualify for this assistance, you need at least 90 days active duty. Ships have accredited
First of all, basic requirements must be met such as, age, certain level of education, aptitude, physical and character requirements. One must be the age of 18 to enlist alone but 17 year olds must have their parents’ consent. A high school diploma must have been earned as well as being a United States Citizen. Certain qualities such as mental preparedness, physical fitness, and readiness are all qualities a member must have to be successful. These qualities will help keep the member mentally stable and be able to handle stressful situations as well as be ready to report for any military assignment. The last but most definitely not least requirement is passing of the ASVAB test. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is an academic, timed test meant to gauge the ability to learn a new profession usually made available to all high school juniors. The score received on the ASVAB is the percentage of the people that the test taker has done better on the test than. For example, scoring a 61 would mean the test taker was more successful on the test than 61% of the people that have already taken the ASVAB. It’s all a huge competition to see who qualifies for the harder jobs. In order to pass the test a 32 is required and a perfect score would be a 99. Unfortunately, the ASVAB is just one loop that must be jumped through. (AFBMT)
My name is Johan Garel, MSCMSc, I am a physician assistant and I want to serve my country. As prior military, I have firsthand experience of serving my country. Honor, respect, dependability, hard work, and responsibility are a few of the attributes I honed while serving. The United States Navy will definitely provide me ample opportunity to grow in these area and lead.

“The purpose of the Reserve is to provide and maintain trained units and qualified persons to be available for active duty in the armed forces when needed” (va.gov). Furthermore, the work and career choices in each individual branch are unique and desirable as in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard. Many different requirements though, are determined by the branch you choose and desire to join. In order to enlist in the Air Force, you must be between the ages of 17 through 27, with no more than two dependents. “The Air Force is the nation 's source of air and space power, the primary mission of the USAF is to fly planes, helicopters, and satellites” (military.com). The Coast Guard also only allows two dependents, and you may join from 17 through 39 years of age. “The Coast Guard 's mission is primarily with domestic waterway, they do rescues, law enforcement, drug prevention, and clear waterways” (military.com). The purpose of this lab is to isolate photoheterotrophic bacteria using an enrichment culture from a sample of marine sediment. The enrichment culture provides the photoheterotrophic bacteria with specific conditions to promote growth.
Must be appointed prior to 36th birthday, except the maximum age may be extended one year for each year of full-time active military duty - up to a maximum of 6 years.
Joining the Navy is challenging, especially when you commit to join before you’re 18 years of age. When you join the Navy before the age of 18, you get put into the Early Entry Program. The Early Entry Program prepares you physically and mentally before leaving to basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. The Early Entry Program trains us to be physically fit and mentally tough. On the weekends we train at the Redondo Beach Navy Early Entry Program Facility. We run up to 12 miles some days and swim miles with packs weighing half of our body weight. We hike, run, swim and we do it all day. I was put in charge and have the responsibility of making sure everyone does make it on time, to encourage and lead the recruits under me to keep pushing,
A beginning enlisted person may not get any training other than basic training then sent on to a feet command for on the job training in their field. Others will go immediately to an advanced school then to the fleet. As a person is able to show the expertise or knowledge they have by spending certain amounts of time at a rank and passing examinations and ranking boards they can become advanced to higher ranks and then sent on to even more technical schooling which will help them to advance later on in the future.
My application to the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program follows the time-period I previously believed would be the best of my adult life: after I’d been confirmed a place in a U.S. medical degree program. While I was and continue to be extremely pleased with achieving this goal - which inspired incredibly hard work throughout the last five exhausting years - I would be diminishing myself to claim that this achievement was enough. Long before beginning my applications to medical school, I had been made aware of the benefits and influence of Navy medicine – mainly through its contributions to pre-hospital emergency medical care. I was particularly impressed with the significant foundational influence Navy research has had on medical
had only so many troops at the time, so the Merchant Marine Academy was immediately set up in Long Island. It provided an education specifically geared towards training people to become well versed in the Maritime exploits in the past, present and future. This somehow created a lot of bad blood between certain people across the country. Many reporters eventually came to label the cadets and graduates of the academy as "draft dodgers," claiming that they were skipping out on serving their country by going to school and then hoping onto a boat to enjoy a leisure life at sea. However, going to a maritime academy didn't defer you from the draft. It only provided a potential escape from having a gun thrust into your hands for the time being. In the end, many cadets who graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy voluntarily went to sea to put their lives on the line to deliver critical supplies during the
My interests in Marine Laboratory stemmed when I was a senior in high school when I experimented the effects of excess fertilizer byproducts on water hyacinth’s ability to absorb metals in fresh bodies of water. Growing up as a swimmer, marine chemistry has always intrigued me, and working at MPL will help me decide the career pathway I want to choose. MPL offers a myriad of internship projects that interest me, but with my given statistics and chemistry background, it would be an honor to work with Eric Terrill, Grant Deane, and Peter Gerstoft.
In summary, underwater exploration has a good prospect to uncover new scientific data that can help solve some of our leading epidemics. A reliable and advanced means of data collection are necessary to successfully extract these specimens. As shown with the Nereus and Deepsea Challenger underwater exploration vessels, we currently have the technology that allows us to send submersible research vehicles both manned and remotely operated to the deepest parts of the ocean. With the technology and resources ever expanding, it is possible to improve the design and increase research of our
From the very beginning of my student life, I loved biology. When I was in my lower secondary school, I still remember that day when my science teacher told me the story of microbes and the day after showed and taught applications of microscope, my interest in microbiology started to take its shape. I became even intensely interested when he told us that bacteria and virus are invisible to your naked eyes, however they can cause you disease and some might kill you. After the completion of my high school as a science major student, my parents wanted me to join medical school and become a doctor. But I had already encrypted curiosity of microbiology inside my mind. So, I began my journey into the world of microbiology. I secretly joined microbiology without telling my parents and told them that I am not shortlisted in MBBS exam.
