a. Which of these models offers better support for the young adolescent learner?
I think the Middle School model is best for the young adolescent learner. The middle school model pays close attention to emotional and learning development. This is a transitional time period for adolescent as they are just leaving elementary school and entering a new world with more independence and responsibility than before. The middle school model allows students to transition out of elementary school while preparing for their next transition of high school. The middle school model allows for students to be divided into teams where they will get to know their teachers and peers pretty well. The teams include four teachers who work with 100 students. For the middle school model the strengths include the team system which allows a group of 100 students to have 4 content teachers. These students also have lunch together. It is a good way for students to transition from elementary and allows them to build peer relationships as well as relationships with their teachers. This model allows teachers to get to know their students and to collaborate with the other teachers on the team to plan instruction around the needs of the students. The shortcoming of this model is that students are mostly exposed to their team instead of other students in their grade. The strengths of the junior high school model is that is emphasizing independence which is something students are beginning to learn more as they transition to young adults. It also allows them to interact with many students throughout the day. However the shortcomings include that there is not as much support for the adolescent learner as there is in the middle school model. Students have different teachers throughout the day with mixed grades that does not get to take into account the uniqueness of each
