Question 6: Major Milestones of Prenatal Development In the middle of a women’s menstrual cycle, an ovum bursts from one of her ovaries and is drawn into one of the fallopian tubes. The corpus luteum releases a hormone that helps thicken the lining of her uterus, getting it ready for the egg. After the egg is released, it moves into the fallopian tube. It stays there for about 24 hours, waiting for a single sperm to fertilize it. If one sperm does make its way into the fallopian tube and burrows into the egg, it fertilizes the egg. In the first trimester, there’s three prenatal phases which are the germinal period (1-2 weeks), the period of the embryo (3-8 weeks), and the period of the fetus (9-12 weeks). Between the 7th and 9th days, implantation occurs which is when the blastocyst burrows deep into the uterine lining. The trophoblast forms a membrane called the amnion, that encloses the organism in amniotic fluid which helps keep the temperature of the prenatal world constant and acts like a cushion against any jolts caused by the mother’s movement. By the end of the second week, the trophoblast forms another protective membrane called the chorion which surrounds the amnion.
