Rock music, much like anything perennial in this world, evolved from plucked guitars and pop-like lyrics to contemporary social commentary and experimental sounds to everything in between. What parents all around the world detested for its vulgarity as exemplified by Elvis’s televised pelvic thrusts is now considered classic while the very same generation is shocked by Miley Cyrus’s award ceremony performances. That being said, it is in my opinion that “rock” is an ever-morphing set of ideals that is held together by a core belief in the power rebelliousness of youth. The sound of rock can be anything from a steel drum quartet to an electronic DJ as long as there is still a vibe of rebellion in the lyrics or structure. If a song or artist is …show more content…
The same can be said of Miley Cyrus in modern-times; although the backlash for her “twerking” took social media by storm, many young people still admire her tenacity and imitate the dancing style she brought to mainstream America. Although both artists’ can be considered pop musically due to their catchy lyrics and danceable beat, the fact that they fought back against social norms and pushed the envelope helps me classify the two as rock artists. The same can be said of hip hop artists from the ‘90s. While their flow and beats are undoubtedly hip hop, their effects on the cultural world are most definitely rock. NWA, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls, while more often than not interpreted as thugs due to their misogynistic and violent lyrics, still voiced how many young Americans felt about racial tensions in America and noted the injustice in what I believe to be a true rock fashion. Their songs about what it was like being black in America, crass and unforgiving, opened the eyes of those who had not personally experienced their struggle and validated those who had. This is another very important aspect of rock music; the lyrics reflect how the marginalized youth feel. Rock artists become their voice in a world that often does not take them very
Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n ' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States. The music we know as rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the mid 1950s, even though a form of it had been on the horizon for at least a decade or so. A quarter of the American population moved during World War II, and that is what brought southern, rural, sacred and secular traditions into contact with urban-based music and its audiences. Rock and roll drew on many different styles. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which it developed from earlier blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and swing music. It was also influenced by gospel, country, western, and traditional folk music. With the combinations of all of these genres of music, that help to create this new style of music excited a worldwide generation of young listeners. Even though it had the attention of young listeners it started to upset the already established social, cultural and musical authorities. With this new music style coming into full affect along with new dances and people having voicing out their own opinion caused a lot of turmoil. Many people began to question this new genre of music and labeled it as the devil music while other loved it and couldn’t help but dance

The Greek philosopher Aristotle defines a tragic hero as a morally-bound protagonist whose flaws develop into a downfall, suffering or defeat. Tragic heroes were first introduced in Greek mythology, though many celebrities and athletes in today’s media prove to have similar qualities. One celebrity in particular who embodies the role of tragic hero is Demi Lovato. Lovato knew that by entering the world of Disney, she could potentially end up like the several teens stars before her, including Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Though Lovato attempted to avoid the teen star stereotype of early fame and a rapid downfall, she found herself falling down the same path of those before her.
For many people like me that like rock music the words of Eddie Van Halen make a lot of sense. For me, rock is a way of life, a musical genre to express your emotions and opinions about your life, in which young people can show their own identity and their own ideas to the society. But not many share this view. The rock may have started as described, but over time it became more of a stereotype. Teenagers came together to create a rock band so they could become famous and have all the money they wanted, it was a simple way to have an insured future. More than enjoying music, the interest was materialistic and just another way to earn money in an easy way. Also, they became an iconic figure in fashion. People try to imitate their dressing style

The genre of rock and roll has been and will continue to be a genre fueled by rebellion. Even the King, as hometown sweet and charming as he was, had a flare for the raucous. Elvis Presley’s gyrating hips and drug addiction had set the standard; the old saying is, in fact, sex, drugs and rock and roll. From then on, this genre was all about pushing the boundaries of what could be done. For some, it meant being shirtless on stage; for others, it meant they had to eat a bat on stage. Regardless of the stunts pulled, rock and roll was their drive. What began as a mesmerizing combination of R&B and country, became a catalyst for change and the heart and soul of generations.
Rock and roll is a touchy music genre for some people, mostly older and middle-aged. Younger kids and adults loved it a lot and always listened to it. Older people did not like and see people who listen to rock music as bad people or in other words “associated with drugs” – or something along the lines of that phrase or just simply up to no good. Other older adults also see it as a threat or

The emergence of Rock and Roll was one of the most pivotal moments of our nation’s history. The impact that this genre of music made is still evident in our culture. However, before this genre was able to gain momentum, it faced many cultural conflicts. The book, All Shook Up: How Rock ‘N’ Roll Changed America by Glenn C. Altschuler analyzes the impact that rock and roll music has made on American culture. It explores how the Rock and Roll culture was able to roughly integrate and later conflict with preceding cultural values. This is especially apparent in chapters regarding race and sexuality. Overall, Rock and Roll was extremely controversial amongst parents and educators. This new music genre was condemned by the previous generation as
Deriving predominantly from blues and folk music, rock has borrowed most of its stylistic tendencies from other genres of music. From a technical standpoint, rock may be defined by the commonness of simple syncopated rhythms, or a variety of rhythms to keep the music on beat, in a 4/4 meter, or a recurring pattern that provides the beat of the music, a repetitive snare drum back beat and repetitive minor modes, or alternative tonalities derived from a familiar major scale. From a stylistic standpoint, rock can be defined by the implication and identification of male sexuality and aggression, predominantly white middle class males, and concerning a wide variety of topics. From a listener's standpoint, each definition of what differentiates rock
Rock ‘n’ roll and 20th Century Culture According to Philip Ennis, rock ‘n’ roll emerged from the convergence of social transformations which resulted from World War II (Ryan 927). Despite its pop culture origins, rock music is arguably one of the strongest cultural factors to develop in this century. Artists such as Lennon, McCartney and Dylan defined the emotions of a generation and, in the last decade, it as even been acknowledged by members of the establishment which it hoped to change as a major influence in the country. In order to understand how rock went from a sign of rebellion to a cultural icon, it is necessary to understand where it came from. According to Albert
Rock Music When you think of rock music, you would think of Elvis Presley or an Emo band that sings about depression or self-harm. That is the stereotypical definition for rock, for it is not about the screams and metal sound, or the shaking of a pelvis to a groovy song. This genre stands out from the others because of the different guitars used, and lyrics that either leaves you thinking about life or with a message to change your life. Rock has made a huge impact in today’s music.
Rock and roll has developed a long way throughout the years from a dance craze in the 1950’s to a political and cultural landscape that is recognized worldwide. Rock and roll has come to define the roots of teenage rebellion, people who don’t follow the norms, and have disrespect for authority. The style of rock and roll itself is a melting pot of music, a combination of sounds that include jazz, country, blues, ragtime, gospel, swing, classical, and ethnic music. It can be a simple variation of three chords to a complex chromatic scale combination. It can convey emotions such as love, hate, fear, lust, sadness, joy, disillusion, or a strong sense of reality. Many things can be said about rock but the fact is that it is the most widely
