I believe community involvement is essential in order to cultivate skills, increase awareness and educate people to have a fruitful venture in mind, body and spirit. The cultural diversity, partnerships with public, private and non-profit organizations have been instrumental to our success in this region. Despite the different ideologies and competing viewpoints, I hope to become an agent of
One of the most serious problems facing all veterans today is the lack of proper healthcare. Soldiers, sailors and airmen are leaving active duty without having proper healthcare to cover their physical or mental injuries. The department responsible for veteran’s healthcare is the Department of Veterans Affairs. (VA) According to The department of Veterans Affairs website, “The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a government-run military veteran benefit system with Cabinet-level status. It is responsible for administering programs of veterans’ benefits for veterans, their families, and survivors. The benefits provided include disability compensation, pension, education, home loans, life insurance, vocational rehabilitation, survivors’ benefits, medical benefits and burial benefits. It is administered by the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.” The VA, who was formerly called the Veterans Administration, was established 21 July 1930, to consolidate and coordinate government activities affecting war veterans. The VA encompassed the functions of the former U.S. Veterans ' Bureau, the Bureau of Pensions of the Interior Department and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. On 25 October 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation creating a new federal Cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs to replace the Veterans Administration effective 15 March 1989 (V.A.)
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Organization (VFW) is a nonprofit group founded in 1899 comprised of military service members and qualified veterans. Their mission is to serve the veterans, military, and community while nurturing camaraderie (VFW, n.d.). They aim to ensure that all veterans are appreciated for their service and are recognized for the sacrifice they have made for this great country. The VFW of Rapid City, South Dakota is one of many locations in the United States. They offer many resources to their local veterans as well as promote awareness regarding war-associated illnesses.
It’s possible to distinguish higher levels of employment among female veterans than female non-veterans. In fact, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (2016) reports that around 34.2% of women
This report is the result of the contributions of several team members, who conducted site visits, processed and analyzed data, managed team activities, and enabled the Grant Thornton team to execute a rigorous study over a short period of time. The team was led by Grant Thornton, with integral support from team member FTI Consulting, and three independent contractors.
Everyone should keep the promise by hugging them, shake their hands, and most importantly say ‘Thank You’ because they had risked their lives for their families, friends and even the whole United States just to protect everyone.
A problem that I see in my clinical area at the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is appropriate direct care staffing on the inpatient psychiatric unit. The current staffing model being used by the VA is staffing methodology. The Staffing methodology model was created to account for acuity of patients, their illnesses, and the task that are required to be performed by nurses (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2008). Staffing methodology has created an environment where there are either an abundance of staff which is resulting in wasting resources or too little staff which is creating risks for safety and poor patient outcomes. Current available staffing model have been created in mind for caring for medically ill patients (American Psychiatric
The highest position in the Department of Veteran Affairs is the Secretary of Veteran Affairs. The President appoints the position with the advice and consent of the Senate. His responsibility is to oversee all benefits programs for Veterans and family members.
One goal of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is to improve operations and deliver seamless and integrated support (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2014). According to the VA Strategic Plan for 2014-2020, one objective that supports this goal is to make the VA a place that great employees want to work. To make the VA a place where great employees want to work, the organization must be able to hire and recruit the best employees in order to change the culture. One way to better recruit the best employees is to decrease the lengthy hiring process currently in practice at the VA. Recruiting the best employees in term of fit and skill is vital to the Acute Psychiatry department, as well as other specialty areas, because the turnover
Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Joshua Adams (26) has been referred to the VA by his friend. Joshua has recently returned home from his second deployment. Returning back to civilian life has been challenging for Joshua and has begun to cause strain in his relationship with his long-term girlfriend, Melissa (24).
AmeriCorps is the first opportunity that I’ve encountered that will allows me to incorporate both my community services volunteering experiences and my career passions. I have experiences in community outreach and engagement by being a program coordinator and I have healthcare experiences through my services in the hospital playroom. Yet, my career passion is to combine the two and work with the community on health issues and concerns that underserved and underrepresented populations have in regards to community health. With the AmeriCorps program, I am able used the skills and knowledge that I’ve gained from my experiences and turn them into a real setting and make an impact on the lives of the community.
The overall efficiency of the hiring process at the Department of Veterans Affairs is inefficient in that it is confusing to candidates and takes an unreasonable period of time to complete the hiring process from start to finish. One recommended change would be to have one open position listed for the category of employee that is needed. For instance, since most units often have the same positions open. A Registered Nurse position could be listed on the USA jobs website for applications. The supervisors could interview the candidates together one time and decide amongst themselves which candidates may be the best fit for their individual units. Interviewing candidates together would greatly reduce the wasted time spent by supervisors interviewing
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the largest military organisation in Oceania and has more than 57,000 personal in active duty and more than 55,000 in the reserve forces, both active and standby personnel. The ADF has a very large and effective employment cycle that may at a glance seem incredibly complicated and overdone, but looking into the finer details you can see just why they have it as such a complicated process. The ADF’s strong point is in its long and efficient establishment phase, but it never dies down, priding itself on being a strong and employer of choice. The ADF has planned its employment cycle out very systematically so that each phase has a specific way it needs to go, simplifying the process down to a fine art.
History of MHS – According to Kongstvedt (2007), the history of military health care dates back to the establishment of the Army Medical Department on July 27, 1775 and congress established the position of the nation’s first Director General and Chief Physician which later evolved to the office of the Surgeon General of the United States. One of the first unique features of the military health system is the act that was approved by the congress ordering the deduction of 20 cents a month from the salary of Sailors and Marines for their care in civilian treatment facilities. I personally consider this as the first “insurance payment system” long before the birth of HMOs. As the military expands, they eventually assigned one Surgeon General for each branch of the military except Coast Guard (Coast Guard was under the Department of Transportation and eventually became under Department of Homeland Security after 9/11). When sequestration took in effect, all branches were consolidated under one health care system: Military Health System.
