Technology is changing the way humans complete certain tasks. Whether it be communicating with others, or using navigation tools for directions, technology affects everyone in some way or another. In fact, technology is changing the way our government fights wars with other countries and terrorist groups. Drones have become one of the most sought after pieces of military equipment in the last decade. They have become one of the many important tools our government uses for counterterrorism policies in the United States. These candidates encourage the deployment of drones for war, military attacks, and surveillance. They believe the positive effects of drone use far outweigh the negatives. For example, Republican candidate, Rand Paul, stated his position on drone use in recent debates and interviews. “Rand Paul supports the use of drones for targeted killings of al-Qaeda and affiliated combatants, but opposes the use of drones to kill U.S. citizens.” (Michel). Rand Paul clearly opposes the use of drones if there is any chance of endangering US citizens, however, he undoubtedly supports strikes against terrorist groups. Some candidates believe there are situations when using drones is warranted, while some believe they should not be used. For example, Ben Carson believes that using drones for surveilling the Mexican Border would be most beneficial to this country (CNN). This would help address the illegal immigration problem that our country has been forced to deal with for the past several decades. In a recent interview with Vincent Karakashian, he stated, “Unfortunately, civilian casualties are the costs of war. If we don’t strike the enemy first, the enemy will strike us first.” (Karakashian). Furthermore, the American Drone Program has been a recent topic of discussion in politics. It is considered a counterterrorism program since the start of the Obama presidency. As a result, the Republican candidates support the use of drones not only for military purposes, but for other defensive purposes as well.
