Military Mangament and the Four Functions

Effective management is the ability to make people who work under your authority become more productive than they would be without you in charge. Managers have different methods of managing but all types usually include the four functions of management. Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the four functions. The Army branch of United States Government employs me. In my military job, I utilize these functions to accomplish difficult assignments in the field or in battle missions while stationed in Iraq. The first function of management is planning. Planning, according to the wikipedia encyclopedia is "deciding what needs to happen in the future and generating plans for action." Based on team feedback and how the plan is actually unfolding, modification to the plan might be needed. Much of the time in Iraq, environmental factors, enemy activity, and mechanical breakdowns require me to re-assess how the team will proceed. Problems inevitably arise. Roadside bombs destroy equipment or injure squad members. Equipment isn 't delivered on time or is delivered with a malfunction. In my management role of Sergeant, I need to monitor every phase and be aware of all that is happening when it happens. When something falls out of accordance from the original plan, I need to follow a "plan B." Plan B may not work either and this is when thinking on my feet or thinking under pressure becomes vital to the success of the mission. I remain calm in the face of adversity and lead my troops forward despite tribulation. A calm, confident, and positive attitude that enables me to think quickly and change the plan helps my troop to have faith in me as their leader. I am ultimately responsible for everything that happens in the scope of my authority but the delegation of new responsibilities help accomplish the goal and keep the soldiers safe. The four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are aspects that of managing that can be tailored to an individual 's own career path and also their personal style.
