The first military establishment was formed before the United States was officially declared a country for the purpose of meeting the needs of the colonists during the American Revolution. The Army’s mission is to fight and win the Nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across a full range of military operations. Although the history of the United States Army is deeply rooted in the country’s history, the implementation of the United States Special Forces Operations Unit is fairly young having been established in May 1952 yet unannounced to the public until 1954. In an effort to uphold the Army’s mission, the Special Forces Operations Unit was initially formed to assist with
Many people are concerned about the U.S. military because of how many risks come with joining it. However, the U.S. military also explains the benefits that one could receive. Joining the military is a decision that should not be taken lightly. One must understand all aspects of the military. In order for a voter to be fully informed about joining the US military, one must consider both the risks, like mental illnesses and commitment and benefits, like education, and experience.
Terrorism is a massive problem--everybody realizes that. Regardless of origin, culture, country, or political standpoint, every sane person understands that terrorism is something that is still relatively prevalent in the world, and something needs to be done about it. The problem, however, is that there is no easy solution. The United States tends to take overbearing control and responsibility for all terrorist threats, groups, and attacks, but this is simply not reasonable. Although we cannot expect every country to take initiative against terrorist threats like ISIS, sustained international coordination is necessary to effectively confront transnational terrorist groups (Shirkey). This way, the US can begin taking care of themselves and their own country, as they still have many issues that have yet to be solved. While working together is important, though, it is not the key to solving the problem. What we must do in addition is investigate and address the root causes of terrorism, and analyse them in detail in order to best combat terrorist groups at their roots.
President Obama stated in his Anti-Terror Strategy address, "We continue to face a terrorist threat. We cannot erase every trace of evil from the world, and small groups of killers have the capacity to do great harm. That was the case before 9/11, and that remains true today” (Obama). The Middle East today is composed of very complicated religious tensions, unstable states, and rising terrorist organizations. The collapse of central governments and the rise of powerful non-state actors breed problems that foreign powers and the world’s only superpower, simply should begin to address. Many argue that the involvement in the Middle East is not our problem and that it will only cause our national debt to increase. As human beings we must began to realize the crimes against humanity occurring in the region and ask ourselves one question, can we truly turn a blind eye to the hundreds of innocent people dying and at what cost? The United States of America must get involved in the Middle East to ensure justice is achieved and maintained. Our interference will decrease the chances of terrorist attacking U.S. soil, and our military involvement will save the lives of many innocent citizens caught up in the turmoil. The United States must protect its interests and allies in the region. America stands for freedom, justice, and dignity; we must take a stand to defend ourselves and those in need, if we truly want to uphold the
Terrorism is the most concerned conflict the United States has on its agenda today. On September 11th of 2001, two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, killing over 2,000 people and causing the buildings to collapse. This horrendous event caused the U.S. to start research, prepare, and prevent the terrorist attacks. It was discovered that the planes were hijacked by a group of militants from al-Qaeda (terrorists associated with the Islamic Extremist Group). Although the United States has recovered, the Middle East is continued to be left corrupt and unstable. The U.S. stresses that the Middle East will strike again, especially because the rise of power that terrorists have gained over the past years. Since most countries in the Middle East are unfortunately experiencing such low conditions, terrorism has created a large impact on it.
The position of president is the highest office in the nation. Many people believe in order to be president the person filling the office should have military experience. Since the 1992 the candidate that has won has had no military experience but prior to this year the majority of presidents had military experience. The public does not require their presidential candidates to have military experience and in the last few decades have elected presidents with no military experience despite the fact the country has been embroiled in the War on Terror. Presidents should be required to serve time in the military before running for this office.
Limited war was not so successful. Eventually, Lincoln realized that limited war should be replaced by total war. When total war began Lincoln order that the southern ports be blockaded and he insisted that 75,000 voluntary serve for the ninety days. Ulysses S grant implemented the policy of total warfare because, “he was determined to control the Mississippi valley”(86). Grant was very eager to be involved in the war and the actions he took proved to be very victories. He was able to capture nearly fifteen hundred prison in Tennessee valley. He also secured “Nashville and Memphis suppliers at Shiloh, and Vicksburg . Grant, following what Lincoln had stated about total war, allowed his men to forage food and take whatever plantation they could.
Early Americans understood the necessity of powerful armed forces and citizen volunteers in times of conflict. As the United States became a developed country, it also became apparent that a strong military force was necessary for global trade and strategic positioning for the prevention and possible participation in war. Strengthening America’s military resulted in the United States becoming and remaining a major world power.
In my opinion I argue that U.S. policy and practice indeed has placed too much emphasis on fighting al Qaeda, to the point that we still see today how it has negatively impacted our economic infrastructure and global presence, rather than managing the broader issues of terrorism. Although it was only natural that the American government would retaliate after the event that was 9/11, the combined losses of lives, finances, and other resources and human rights violations caused by continuous investment in the war against terrorism far exceeded what is considered rational and reasonable by many people. Despite the severe costs of this ongoing battle, I and many others suspect that America is only going to continue to burden itself until we see a formal defeat of the enemy, unfortunately because of our constant meddling in the middle east we only ended up playing a part in influencing the creation of more Islamic extremist groups like for example ISIS/ISIL.
Colin Powell suggests, "Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership" The U.S. Military overseas operations may defend and solve certain problems but, the troops overseas could be in more danger there than in the United States. Overseas military for the United States, use resources that could be used with greater importance in the United States, they deal with different conspiracies, and although the military is a defense department it fights wars that will solve the situation not begin problems.
The 20th century entailed many ups and downs, such as the fall of the Standard Oil Company by President William Taft, creator of the first assembly line by Henry Ford, and the opening of the Panama Canal. Most importantly, the U.S. along with other allies entering World War I and II showed just how dominant the U.S. was, both domestically
The United States military should not be used to fight terrorism on America soil, due to the fact that it can causes mass destruction and chaos. Attempts to defeat terrorism through military operations in rogue states may eventually defeat one foe; however the pictures of bombed hospitals and injured civilians will only create more enemies (Cannon, 2014). Terrorism is the use of harmful or lethal force to intimidate, terrorize and provoke citizens, in order to fulfill the interests of the terrorist. Terrorists normally operate from a government, community and organization in which specific goals are trying to be reached, whether it be trying to ruin the comfort of living, provoking fear or disrupting the safeness of our country. Most terrorest groups operate in rogue countries because the governments are easier to manipulate, due to the fact that theyre so ill epuipped and not capable of partaking in a long-term war
covert military operations, directed by Colonel Oliver North, a well-decorated Vietnam War veteran. North became somewhat of a problematic figure, often bragging of his close relationship to the President, although office logs from the time show that Reagan never saw North alone, and spoke to him only once on the telephone. However, Reagan’s reasons for forging ahead in this situation, despite congressional opposition, can best be explained by his remarks in the “red tide” television speech given on March 16, 1986. “Using Nicaragua as a base, the Soviets and Cubans can become the dominant 15 Pemberton, Ibid., p. 173. 14 power in the crucial corridor between North and South America.”16 As a result of his continued pressure, the House did finally
George Washington Bush once said, “There’s no bigger task than protecting the homeland of our country.” Terrorism was and still is a huge problem in America and every other country in the world. We, as Americans, are privileged to live in a country where no real threats to our safety exist, no one pushes their religious or political beliefs on us and we are not threatened by an ongoing violence in our country. Although terrorism always has been and always will be an ongoing event, 9/11, the death of Osama bin Laden, and the Afghanistan war have been tremendous factors in learning how to protect this country.
One very big first in my life was our first overseas duty station in Japan. This was such an adventure from start to finish, and I experienced many other firsts during that tie as well. The flight to Japan seemed like it took a lifetime, but that might be because I had a one year old on my lap most of the time. She had a seat, but she refused to sit in it at any given time. We finally made it to Japan and through customs and then came a three-hour bus ride to the base we were going to be stationed to, Atsugi. We got checked into our hotel room, just one room for the three of us, and then started the two weeks of jet lag. The very first full day that we were in Japan was my daughter’s first birthday, so we also celebrated a bit with her. We spent two months in one room together, mostly my daughter and I, since my husband deployed fairly quickly after arriving, until they finally found housing for us. Once in housing we received our shipment, minus furniture, and celebrated our first of many homecomings while in Japan.
