I feel it is important for organizational leaders to have some skills in dealing with political issues both internally and externally. Everyone in a workplace has their own personal goals, egos, aspirations and agendas, and in for employees to get what they want there is going to be some level of compromise, negotiation, and politicking. Political issues do not become a problem until the individuals motivations are not aligned with the company’s (Fallon, 2014). Being in the military for 20 years I have seen a lot of political issues both internally and externally that have directly affected our work environment. When I was in a unit a few years ago, I saw a couple of members who was receiving rewards and recognition that probably did not deserve it. The members were above average at their job, but were constantly late, and would have an excuse for everything. There was a supervisor who had reprimanded them for their …show more content…
Our system is based on a five point scale with one being the worst and five being the best. On average the rule of thumb used to be if you performed your work and did not get into trouble you were a five. The system was over inflated and was really not an accurate was to determine how the members really performed. We had a senior supervisor who came into our unit, and stated there would not be any more five ratings unless you won an award, either quarterly or yearly. The political issue was that we were the only base executing this, and for promotion we compete with everyone in our career field across the Air Force. Our members were being rated differently than all the other bases and this was affecting how many points one would receive for job performance, in return affected many members in earning promotions. There were complaints filed, morale was low, good people volunteered to leave for other assignments and members just feel they were being treated
The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is a decision-making model to assist military members in making sound military decisions and to compile operation orders. This paper will describe MDMP and apply it to a recent job-related decision of the author; preparation for a combat logistics patrol (CLP) while deployed in Iraq. The paper will identify the steps in the model and describe how critical thinking impacted the decision.
According to Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1-02, Operational Terms and Symbols, “The Military Decisionmaking Process (MDMP) is an interactive planning methodology to understand the situation and mission, develop courses of action, and produce an operation plan or order”. (2016a, pg. 1-62) There are seven steps to MDMP. This focused area writing assessment will focus on specific tasks inside of step two, mission analysis. It will expound upon the tasks, identify critical facts and
Why do some politicians garner immense support and others get resounding dissent? Qualities of effective leadership are vision, dependability, and courage. To begin, a good leader has to motivate those under his command towards a common objective. Whether it be a short-term goal or long-term aspiration, a vision serves as a reference for the future by painting a picture and laying a roadmap
The military is an organization that encounters many information technology issues. The United States Air Force is the service branch of the armed forces that handles the air, space and cyberspace warfare. It is governed by the President of the United States (POTUS) and is one imperative segment of our government, the Department of Defense. The headquarters is the Pentagon which is located in Arlington County, Virginia. The Air Force employs about 633,484 personnel, which includes active duty, fulltime, reserve and air guard personnel. There are many industries that the Air Force does business with, but there is one that stands out the most, which is the nuclear weapons industry.
As a NCO, you will have all types of challenges in your career. Part of your leadership responsi-bility is to ensure soldiers understand how ethics apply in everyday military operations. Knowing the right and wrong tied to your feelings always motivates enlisted in their everyday adventures. Being the norm of society is something we all strive to do, morally leaders have the duty to teach ethical situations to soldiers. The motivating factor is teaching the standards of behavior. In the past ten years, we have seen to many ethical behavior issues with senior officers and enlisted. Recruiters have slept with recruits prior to them joining the military, drill sergeants having sexual relations with recruits in basic training, senior
I have been in the Air Force for eleven years and it appears policy is changing every day. In the military, we are straying away from tradition and adapting to the needs of society. For example, when I served as a drill instructor we would change policy every time a recruit was offended. The constant changes have sparked numerous controversial hardships in our nations military. This thread highlights examples of organizational conflict and politics based on my personal experience in the United States Air Force.
When speaking of this grading scale, you can easily compare it to the academics of ivy league schools. Students are highly compettive and unwilling to give a helping hand, thus creating a environment of subtle hostility. This policy eliminates a sense of community because its every man for himself. The grading scale is very secrative and causes workers to have a heighten sense of curiosity. Some employees will take extreme measures to ensure that they are being treated equally. To eliminate hostility in the workplace there must be transperancy. Overall its a good method, but not when its secrative. Also in regards to newer employees being promoted before the older ones, we must understand that many factors play a role in this decision making.
The political leader understands the political reality of organizations and can deal with it. He or she understands how
The best rating and evaluation system cannot be chosen without first understanding the problems of the old and current systems. The introduction described the four primary reasons why a new rating system may be required. Indeed, all four of the reasons existed in the Air Force and warranted leadership to take a look at implementing a new system. The old system utilized a graphic rating scale, it included a list of traits and raters would judge how an Airman performed according to those traits (Brown 2016). Some of the dissatisfaction with the old system comes from approximately 90% of the enlisted members of the Air Force received the highest possible work performance ratings year after year or as the performance
In Niccoló Machiavelli’s “The Prince,” he describes all the qualities that he believes a prince, or ruler, must have in order to succeed. He writes in a very crisp manner, with key examples for each point. The most controversial item in his book is his clear inattention to ethics and morals. This essay will attempt to use Machiavelli’s views and apply them to semi-modern day politicians.
Militarization is a set of beliefs and values that stress the use of force and domination as appropriate means to solve problems and gain political power, while glorifying the tools to accomplish this. It influences many dimensions of social life, especially in societies like the United States that place a high value on military superiority The military and police comprise the state’s primary use-of-force entities, a foundation of its coercive power. A close ideological and operational alliance between them in handling domestic social problems that may arise by using excessive force and taking innocent lives in the process It is crucial to change the culture of the militarization in American law enforcement.
As an organizational- level leadership, he will confront many thorny problems and missions that challenge their moral criteria and military profession. In particular, when they receive the order from the upper- level, how he employ his expertise to exercise his moral leadership and undertake the tasks. Actually, both of the profession and ethic are interdependent, and inseparable. Thus, a professional commissioned officer should understand how to fit ethic into his expertise. Moreover, people would face the dilemmatic situation between the obedience of rules and the consideration of the consequence. When it comes to the moral or ethical, should I follow the deontology or consequentialism? Which one is the most critical priority to the stewardship
The Effect of Army Taboo on Soldiers’ Sexuality: Fact and Consequences Introduction The United States Department of Defense (DoD) was adopted an official “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy regarding soldiers’ sexual activity in order to abide by conservative moral standards. However, this type of policy influences the mental health of soldiers of both genders and impacts their surrounding societies as the soldiers who cannot restrain their sexual impulses will satisfy them at the expense of any sexual object available. If a financially deprived social environment welcomes sexually deprived soldiers, in order to achieve an exchange of subsistence, and equilibrium between the needs and the services offered cab eventually be achieved without inflicting damage on the society.
There is a mind-boggling question that has been floating around the American people here lately. And the question is, “What are the qualifications to construct a good political leader?” When you think about this, other careers such as law enforcement, health professionals, educators, and even city transit drivers all have a more clear-cut job depiction on how to be successful in that career, but when it comes to the criteria for political leadership, one will find a vague description on how and what to do, and the various loop holes in certain areas in politics. So this creates an even more challenging task for people to define if a political leader is good or bad; and could possibly create a divide across the nation.
Whenever organizations are faced with evaluating an employee’s job performance they sometimes fail to provide objective feedback that improves their performance. Appraisals are often linked to reward such as promotions and pay raises, so when the system does fail, employees lose trust in the organizations decision making process, and this can lead to employee backlash. We also need to look at rater bias and poor implemetation as reasons for failure as well. Rater biases involves harshness, and tendencies that may be too lenient. Errors like this are caused by appraisers who rank all employees either too high or too low, or rank all employee in the middle of the scale so employees won’t be upset.
