Military Professionalism cannot be incontestably defined, unless it is phrased in terms of what it seeks to address: the relationship between the civilian and military spheres and the traditions and skills necessary to conduct effective exercises of power on behalf of the state. Thus, Military Professionalism may be defined as any combination of behaviors, traits, values, and skills which lead to an optimal outcome in these categories. Huntington and Janowitz differ insofar as they attempt to describe different methods by which Military Professionalism is arrived at, though their core metrics are similar insofar as they agree upon the existence of an optimal level of power for the military to possess in relation to the civilian government. …show more content…

In fact, for Huntington, that is the entirety of the definition! To quote him directly, “A highly professional officer corps stands ready to carry out the wishes of any civilian group which secures legitimate authority within the state.” Huntington, of course, puts forward a substantial sub-structure in his defining of Military Professionalism which is not readily apparent in what seems to be such a simple definition. In his principle work on civilian-military relations, The Soldier and the State, he puts forward a dichotomy of objective and subjective civilian control over the military, the former of which represents simple voluntary and autonomous subservience to the objectives of the civilian sphere, while the latter indicates a transmutation, and an integral weakening and altering of the military readiness in an attempt to ensure the primacy of civilian power.
