What role has the military or what role currently does the military play in ocean discovery and research?
The origins of modern oceanography began with the Challenger Expedition (1872-1876). Funded by the British Royal Society, it was the first scientific expedition organized specifically for oceanic exploration. Research, data, and discoveries made aboard the HMS Challenger were recorded, made into reports and published in fifty volumes that are still used by scientists today.
