I read the chapter “The Newcomers”, the book first starts off by stating how France started sending explorers to find new lands. When Francis I, (The king of France) sent Jacque Cartier, his job was to find a shipping route and precious gems and metals. Jacque Cartier arrived at Newfoundland and from there journeyed down to Prince Edward Island. Chief Donnacona went with his brother and two sons protest the cross, but the French convinced Donnacona to allow Jacque Cartier to take his two sons Domagaya and Taignoagny. Donnacona told stories to ward off Cartier from going past Quebec City, but soon Cartier went against Donnaconas wishes and past Quebec City and went as far as Montreal. Cartier’s crew got sick with scurvy and died off but he was still alive so he set sail back to France.
Short Plot Summary Tina Fey starts her section off with explaining “One of my five hundred nicknames for my daughter is Miedge, which is short for Midget, because she was a very small baby.” (239) Tina Fey went into a “deep depression” after having her baby. (pg 240) The best thing for moms to do that the author writes about is “carve out a little time for yourself” (243) There can be some weird things in motherhood but it's well worth it.

The Caribbean is known for its ghost stories, myths and haunted landscapes. Dawn of the Dread, by Geoffrey Philp, was set in rural Jamaica. Being set in the high hills of mount Airy, the author highlights the hilly and mountainous features of the Caribbean terrain. This story revealed both past and present aspects of the Caribbean culture. It revealed notions of ghost stories, corruption, religious practices, homosexuality and police brutality. It embodies love, Rastafarian beliefs and violence. It revolves around the life of Darren Lee, his girlfriend Grace and Georgie. Regardless of his contrasting beliefs, Darren was responsible for saving the town from zombies.
