Yoga, a popular exercise, is classified as a movement form of meditation. It is often included in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) programs to treat chronic depression anxiety disorders, and even ADHD. Several studies realized that MBCT was used as an adaptation of MBSR Therapy to address developmental needs of school-age children. Harvard professor, Sat Bir Khalsa (2013) agrees that yoga in schools helps students improve resilience, mood, and self-regulation skills pertaining to emotions and stress. On the same note, Langoiyen (2013) sees the wisdom in the practice and suggests for yoga to be learned as a tool for listening to the heart.
Hagen (2014) proposes yoga as a potential tool for the youth to deal with stress and regulate themselves. According to Hagen (2014): “Pre-schools, schools, and community centers should offer yoga as part of the opportunities for children and young people to enjoy learning and practicing it from an early age. Obviously, the results of such an investment can be observed over the long-term by having future generations experience less stress.”

First, the length of practices is not yet standardized, thus allowing the teacher or trainer to determine what suits the group profile. Also, there seems to be no standardized number of participants among mindfulness programs, but Thompson & Gilbert (2008) suggest that groups can definitely contribute to the potency of teaching mindfulness. There is a strong suggestion that the format should be experiential and avoid boring or irrelevant practices, or there is a possible risk for boredom to be transmitted among the participants. Of the many techniques people use to reduce stress, yoga is among one of the more popular. Although some may believe that effects of yoga are merely physical, there is research that suggests that yoga has direct impacts on one’s mental state. According to Forbes, in addition to the benefits on the heart and blood flow, yoga helps release dopamine and gaba and serotonin (Walton, 2012). All of these are known to create feeling of happiness in a person (K. W. Brown, personal communication, Sept. 7). For this lab, I decided I would try yoga for myself to test the results.

Schools scattered around the country are beginning to implement rooms called Mindful Moment Rooms. In these rooms angered or disruptive students practice breathing techniques, yoga, and meditation. These rooms are where they can come and relax before being sent to class. In an article from CNN.com called “Instead of detention, these students get meditation” written by Deborah Bloom, the impacts of these relaxtion rooms are told. Students are sent here to so they can create a better learning experience for themselves and their peers.At the Robert W. Coleman Elementary School, the implementation of the “Mindful Moment Room” has decreased detentions and suspensions to none.
For many people with hectic, stressful lives, relaxation means zoning out in front of the TV at the end of the day or getting some extra sleep at the end of the weekend, but for a certain group of people relaxing does not include this. These people are called yogis; those who achieve relaxation through the art of meditation, breathing, stretching, and finding inner peace. In today’s fast paced society it is hard to find a way to fully relax because people are constantly being forced to push their minds and bodies to the limit, which can result in high levels of stress. Mindfulness is another way of meditation. Meditation was used to seek to improve one’s psychological or physical health, or spiritual growth. (Brantley, 2007). The history of Mindfulness comes from Buddhism and his search for enlightenment and a foundation of the four noble truths. The Buddha teaching focus on the four noble truths which consist of knowing suffering exists, there is a cause of suffering, there is cessation of suffering and there is a path that leads to the cessation of suffering. (Van Gordon, 2015). The four noble truths were not only there to represent the Buddha’s experiential understanding of suffering, but also to express the truth (Van Gordon, 2015). Studies of Buddhism and the Four Noble Truths teach us that there is always going to be suffering in our life but to find ways to overcome suffering (Tsering, 2005).
This therapist has used yoga for treatment in students with neuromuscular involvement judiciously; however, the evidence behind it was not explored. The student’s mother is supportive of alternative treatment approaches and has expressed that she would prefer her son not to be medicated to control his inattention and impulsivity. Additionally, he is a compliant student despite his impulsive behavior and it is likely that he will participate in the yoga intervention. Yoga postures will be implemented as part of the treatment program for this preschool student diagnosed with CP. Additionally, this therapist has built a rapport with this student and his mother over the past 2 years, and will develop an exercise program consisting of the beneficial yoga postures for him to use at home. Furthermore, this therapist will instruct the classroom staff so that the yoga postures can be incorporated into their classroom routine. The benefit of being a physical therapist in the school setting is having an entire school year to carry out the yoga intervention. This essay is about the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in the treatment of depression. The purpose of this essay is to address the question, how mindfulness works to improve mental health when used as part of psychological treatment? Firstly, a brief overview is given about what depression is and what the symptoms are, based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5). Secondly, It will discuss mindfulness, as it is defined in mental health treatments. The main body of this essay will cover a description of what MBTC is, where it comes from, how it works, and how this treatment is activated in mindfulness based therapies. The final section will review three studies that have used MBCT in the treatment of depression.
Children and adolescents in the United States face different psychological challenges, such as anxiety disorders, depression, attention deficit disorder, as well as many other psychiatric diagnoses (Bloom, Dey, & Freeman, 2006). The prevalence rate of children diagnosed with a mental disorder is alarming. According to Merikangas et al. (2010), 22.2% of American children and adolescents get diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder that is severe enough to impair their ability to attend school and learn (Bucci, Marques, Oh, & Harris, 2016). Kids that are plagued by various psychological illnesses may experience a difficult time concentrating and staying focused in school. Additionally, the over-accumulation of toxic stress, either due to the pressures of schools or environmental (i.e., difficult exams, poverty, household dysfunction, etc.), can have negative and detrimental effects during childhood, as well as adulthood (Bucci et al., 2016).

The health behavior that was chosen to promote during our campaign was yoga. We encouraged students, staff, and faculty members at Knox College to partake in yoga classes offered by the school in order to reduce stress and target a particular health/illness outcome. The main physical health/illness outcome targeted in this campaign was reduced blood pressure. Yoga is also seen to improve cardiovascular health. We chose to focus on the benefits of yoga to improve blood pressure and cardiovascular health instead of just one or the other because most of the studies that we found while researching mentioned both decreased blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health occurring from practicing yoga.
When most Americans picture yoga, they think of an old indian man sitting in a long robbed dress with his legs crossed in a posture that seems very uncomfortable, except peaceful for the majority of yoga professionals who are in healthy physical shape. Yoga is a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being. This may include the control of breathing, simple meditation, specific body movements and widely practice for relaxation and health. Yoga is becoming more of a popular exercise because it not only helps lose weight, but also helps gain flexibility and strength. Once yoga is practiced for a while, it not only proves that it is great for the body, it also proves how great it is for the mind.
