Mindfulness Training in the Corporate Setting The purpose of this study is to inform the reader of the role that mindfulness plays in the workforce. This literature review will identify the benefits that are associated with mindfulness. Mindfulness increases job performance and job satisfaction, helps employees achieve work-life balance and reduces mind wandering. Mindfulness pertains to awareness in the present moment in a non-judgment way (Kabat-Zinn, 2005). As seen in Table 1, there are several definitions of mindfulness (Dane, 2015, p.1000). As part of my literature review, I intend to clarify the definitions of mindfulness and how they relate to the corporate world. In a study done by Dane and Brummel (2013), it was statistically shown that mindfulness affected an employee’s intent to resign from his/her job (B = -.25, p = .013) (Dane & Brummel, 2013). Additionally, peer reviewed articles on mindfulness have shown a correlation with self-esteem (Brown & Ryan, 2003; Rasmussen & Pidgeon, 2010), vitality (Brown & Ryan, 2003), optimism (Brown & Ryan, 2003), agreeableness (Thompson & Waltz, 2007) and social anxiety (Dekeyser et al., 2008). These variables play a role in the well being and satisfaction that one has with his job and overall satisfaction with life. Research The research for this study is two-fold. The first part of the study will be a literature review of mindfulness as it pertains to the corporate world. The research question is “How does mindfulness affect work performance and job satisfaction of employees?” The second part of the research will be the development of a three-level mindfulness training intervention designed for the use of both small and large companies. The purpose of the training is to provide employees with tools to assist them in regulating thinking processes and in helping them to recognize the importance of staying in the present in order to be more productive, stress-free, and achieve work-life balance.
