Thank you Ms/Mr Speaker, Due to a greater number of white European straight middle aged Australian men in parliament people of different colour, race, age, sexuality and gender feel less encouraged to pursue a parliamentary career. If quotas were to be ensured, more people from diverse cultures will be more confident about pursuing a career in politics , therefore, having just as much merit as everyone else. With an increase in women and minority groups in parliament, more stories and backgrounds will be raised allowing the current majority group to make educated decisions concerning the entire population, not simply a select few. Emily’s list exists today because minority groups are currently not being represented in our parliaments and qoutas
A problem we are currently facing and have been facing for quite a while is racial profiling. An individual should not be stopped on the highway or sidewalk because of their race. People should not have to live their lives in fear of being killed because of suspicion due to the color of their skin, or the stereotype they have. The individual should know their rights, and be educated on what they can and can’t do when being approached by police so that things don’t end in violence. From the point of view of the state trooper, a motorist who is stopped and searched is a potential catch, a shot at a big, career building drug bust. But most of those who are searched are totally innocent, and from their viewpoint the process looks and feels very different. You are stopped for a minor or nonexistent traffic violation; the officer scrutinizes your car carefully through the window and then tells you to step outside; he asks you pointed questions about your trip, your plans, your companions, your friends, and perhaps expresses doubts about the honesty of your answers; he asks for permission to search the car; if you agree, he rummages through your vehicle and belongings; if you refuse, he calls for backup and a police dog to sniff your car for drugs.
I still remember when I met you. That prideful charisma you always carried. How can someone remain so confident being a Mexican immigrant during Trump's election? I often asked myself before I knew your story, before I knew what you had been through.
Imagine your son going out to the real world he has a kid and a wife then there's a knock on the door and you look thru the peephole and the cops and their heads are down and you're confused you open the door and they tell you “Ma’am your son has died”,and you say how they say he has been gunned down by an officer and you know your son was unarmed and you're confused because your son has nevered been doing something bad. This and every day thing you see to african american some are innocent and unarmed and they get shot by police because they say they were fighting back or they were about to pull out a gun and this happens everywhere and police brutality happens every state and everywhere and it mostly happens to african american and other races.
Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin, how many more lives must be lost in order for society to put an end to this? It is sad to say how many lives have been taken away due to racial profiling. It is also shocking to say how anyone never hears about a white person being killed due to racial profiling. From African American, Muslims, Middle Easterners, Native Americans, and Hispanics, when will it all stop? How many more lives is it going to take for us put an end to racial profiling? Racial profiling has been going on since the earliest 21st century, out of all the ethnicities listed above, African American ( Black ) is the one who has been exposed to the most. In this research paper and the whole
The most recent case in the news that involved a live stream on Facebook of an innocent black family. Diamond Reynolds recorded the whole thing. How her and her boyfriend Philando Castile got pulled over for a broken tail light by a Chinese police officer. Philando was shot four or five times on the arm. He did tell the officer that he did have a weapon in his car (a firearm) but that he was licensed to carry. Philando’s girlfriend Diamond claims that all he was doing was reaching out for his license and ID. While she is talking and recording she moves the camera across to show her boyfriend how bloody and how he was losing consciousness, and the cop was still pointing his gun while the officer saw that they had their young daughter in the
6). The Diversity and Equity policy (DET 2013) was created to respond to the growingly diverse Victorian Community. Many Victorians face issues of racism and bullying and due to cultural and religious backgrounds, as well as socio-economic status, many do not experience equal or equitable opportunities. This is due to the emergence of our society as neo-liberal. Neo-liberalism means that ‘the agenda of economic and social transformation’ (Connell, 2013, p. 99) has moved from public agencies to ‘companies selling services in a market.’ A society modelled under neo-liberalism is skewed to support those with money and privilege, a majority of which, in Australian society, are middle class Anglo-Australians. As a result, the issues of equity and diversity within a neo-liberal society leave those affected at a marked disadvantage in comparison to the majority of Australians. The Diversity and Equity policy (DET 2013) is an attempt to improve the disadvantage experienced by the
Topic: The idea I want to talk about is the purpose of Affirmative Action in America, who it represents, and how it affects them.
Allowing women to vote, wage increases, employment and parental leave have been major winning battles for women in Australia and all around the world, but the fights not over yet. Equal representation in politics is a new critical battle that must be tackled head on. It is essential for women to be able to express their opinions on the political course of Australia.
“More than 250 innocent black lives were killed by police officers in 2016. Over 73 percent of suspects pulled over were african american due to the suspicion of drug use yet 76 percent of drug users are white and only 15 percent are african american and also those imprisoned from drugs are 46 percent black and only 26 percent white” Because of the color of someone's skin should this make them any less of a person than another person out there?.. People should not be alienated because of the way they look, but yet all of this happens every single day everywhere. Racial profiling is a source used by police officers to determine if a person is a suspect or not based upon their race or ethnicity. Racial profiling is an obvious violation of the
How can you said “it is to laugh!” when some white man is cursing negroes, don’t you remember your black too. Would it be funny if a white person comes and curses us ( Ma, Charlie and me)? I don’t think so. Its like I don’t know you anymore. What have they turned you into? I recall that when you were a young boy, you used to stand up for us in school. You always protected Charlie and me from anyone. And now you have turned into a cold-hearted person just like them. Also, you used to be proud of the race and color you were born with.
Fifty years have passed since the Civil Rights Act was signed, and even to this day there is much work to do. The civil rights movements is a constant battle. It started even before the Civil War was fought, it started with the songs of freedom sang by the slaves. Yet, we still have not fully achieved equality. The battle will continue for as long as there is anyone who thinks of themselves as superior and more deserving than anyone else. For as long as there is anyone who thinks, “he had to be black”, or “they had to be hispanic”. For as long as we continue to generalize based on race, such as hispanics, black, american, indian, and so on, the fight of the civil rights continues. Until we see each other as equal, then, we will have accomplished
First of all, if you’ve never seen a racewalking competition, go to Youtube right now and look it up. It is incredibly funny and the participants look as though they are in dire need of the toilet. Or you could say they look like New York City commuters trying to catch the last bus out of the city. With that being said, I definitely think the U.S. will take home a medal in racewalking this summer. Many of us do it as part of our routine, everyday life already -- walking fast is in our blood. Tell us we’ll get a medal for walking quickly and we’ll put even more pep in our step. Whether we Americans want to be in the front of the line at the buffet, be the first ones to get our hands on the best Black Friday deals or navigate our way through a crowded city, we often walk with determination, and this societal instinct will translate easily to the racewalking course. Plus, America dominates at every Olympics, so it’s just natural that we win a medal in this event, too.
As can be seen from the videos of children we all hold subconsious biases toward other races. We may believe we are color blind because, after all, this is 2017 and we are not a racist society. However, that is is simply not true. More people are finding out how racists our country can be ever since Trump was elected. His campaign empowered racists and sexists people to exhibits their prejudices full force. Now, it important that people who think color doesn't matter to be honest with themselves. The biases are clearly still there. But with most people they are implicit. Meaning subconscious. People have prejudices they are even aware of. And admitting it is part of the learning process.
Have you ever gone away on holiday, but you couldn’t bring your PC because it was too big and you needed to unplug and untangle everything to even carry it? Or have you smashed the desk your PC is on and the screen turned black? Or has there been a power cut and you want to play or work but can’t because PCs don’t have batteries that charge with electricity? Well, that happens less frequently with laptops so I’ll talk about them and try to persuade you to make a change!
I am sure that everyone of you have heard about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, we all have heard about the famous case of aliens and UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico. Most people might be interested in the topic of aliens, but I know that the majority of you just think of it as rumours and the existence of them are impossible. Therefore, I am standing here in front all of you to make you change your perspective. I am strongly confident that I have found the evidence of their real existence to convince all of you.
