Getting caught up in the extravaganza of bikinis, singing and sashaying, can be easy. One may never forget when Steve Harvey awarded Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez with the crown instead of the rightful champion Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach during the Miss Universe Competition in 2015. A whole lot more goes into beauty pageants than what meets the eye. Several systems take place in the pageant world that empower women. The Miss America Organization has the most driven, intelligent, and compassionate women when it comes to success.
The caliber of young women is astonishing. These women excel in the top of their classes, student body presidents, authors, traveled performers and founders of organizations. Each of them remain true leaders in their society, and part of the reason for this is from the standards that the Miss America Organization sets. What sets apart

Each titleholder has a platform. A platform is a non-profit organization the young women can relate to or feel passionate about to make a difference. The title holders make appearances and hold events throughout their year of service. In addition to her personal platform, Miss America remains as a goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This national platform provides the Miss America Organization the opportunity to not only raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, but to also raise extra money for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Foundation. It increases exposure and awareness in both organizations. The driven women want to serve their community and be that role model to the younger generation. Young girls think Miss America is a real princess and watch her every move. The crown might look pretty and shiny, but it does so much more—it makes a
commences to elevate in the early 1920’s where it was originated to be a marketing implement by a hotel owner. He wanted the city’s tourists to remain in town longer, therefore the rise of beauty pageant blooms and grows until today. It was in Atlantic City where the first Miss America Pageant was staged in September 1921 as reported by an online article on American Experience by PBS, Public Broadcasting Service. Child beauty pageant on the other hand began in the 1960’s where they are judged predicated on individuality looks, capability, poise, perfection and aptitude.
Significance: In regards to the significance of these claims, the examination of how women are objectified spans a wide spectrum from appearance to persona. To hone in on this, the reading “No More Miss America” provides clear evidence as to why beauty pageants are a negative influence
Miss Canada Globe is heavily focused on charity work & non-profit organizations. It provides an opportunity for young women like me to become role models & make a good impact on society. Miss Canada Globe title holders are required to be involved in local, and if selected, national, and international volunteer work. Becoming an active member of society & making positive impacts are aspects of this opportunity I have always valued, yet didn't know how to make an impact on my own.
The Miss America Organization is giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and experience something I never thought I would; all while being able to get involved in the community and support the Children’s Miracle Network. I believe that the title of Miss Greater Waterbury will give me the chance to bring awareness to my platform of anaphylactic allergies. The Miss America Program allows strong women to raise awareness of something they are passionate about, as well as other important social and political issues in America.
Aside from being a beauty queen and a ballerina, Lee is also an outspoken activist. She raves how the Miss Black USA pageant helps serve women of color by helping them achieve their education and academic goals. The real reason many women join pageants is not really because they want to achieve a beauty status but it is actually to gain money for scholarship. Most are trying to finish college while others are pursuing a master’s degree.
First, we will talk about how child beauty pageants started. The upbringing of child beauty pageants is very interesting. It started off with “Pageants celebrating female beauty and charm being fixture at fairs and festivals the U.S. since the 19th century”(Hilboldt), and then “Their rise in popularity probably dates back to 1954, when the miss America pageants was first broadcasted on TV”(Hilboldt). “In 1960, a miami broadcaster hosted the first locally televised pageant for children, Little Miss universes”(Hilboldt). Around “The 1980’s child pageants had become an inextricable part of life in the South…”(Hilboldt). Pageants have dated back for centuries, but did not rise in popularity until it was first broadcasted on TV. Furthermore, the number of kids that participate in beauty pageants is eminence. A majority of little girls wanted to be in pageants, because “They began dreaming of one day becoming Miss America”(Hilboldt). With so many kids in pageants “It’s estimated that 25,000 children compete in more than 5,000 pageants in the U.S. each year”(Hilboldt). It is crazy how many little girls participate in beauty pageants each year just so they can hopefully become the next Miss America. While beauty pageants are still relevant and legal in the U.S. France is trying to ban them. “France is considering a move to ban beauty pageants for girls under 16 as a way to fight the hyper-sexualization of children”(“France”). While,“Under the proposal, organizers of beauty pageants aimed at young children...could face up to two years in prison and fines of $40,000”(“France”). Also, “The measure is a part of of a wider law on gender equality and was approved by the French Senate after garnering 197 votes in favor of the ban,
The tradition of a contest of beauty among women has been around for hundreds of years, but the origins of Miss America come from Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1921. In the years preceding, women's rights were emerging and restrictions against the public display of a women were lightened. With the goal of increased profits, the Businessmen's League of Atlantic City planned several events to keep vacationers interested past Labor Day, calling the Fall Frolic. Among the events was a contest of beautiful women in bathing suits. On September 8th, 1921, an audience of 100,000 crowded the boardwalk to witness this event. This winner of this contest selected by a panel of judges was a sixteen-year-old Margaret Gorman who was awarded one hundred dollars
I love attention, but I live in fear that someone will google me and find my glamor headshots. I still have close friends that don’t know I subjected myself to competing in the Miss Alaska’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant. When I told others in the past, it was more often than not followed by, “You? You did a pageant?” Movie cliches and stereotypes of pageants paint the exact image of what I am not. Except, I had decided pageantry was the only way to provide myself the validation any girl starting high school believes she needs. I was enthralled with the opportunity to advocate, perform, win thousands of dollars in scholarships, and most importantly, value my self-worth solely on how I looked.
Miss America is a yearly pageant that goes on for any girl between the age of 17 to 24. There is a lot of people that enter this every year. Six beautiful and wonderful women have won from Oklahoma. Their life was so amazing when they found out they have won, some of them didn’t even know what to do. There is so much stuff they have to go through to get to enter in the pageant. After they do enter they are very busy with everything trying get to get ready for the big day. Miss America is a pageant that has been going on since 1921. It is something that some girls look forward to for when they are in High School or just got out of High School.
To address the venomous poison that the beauty standard pageants idolize, society must endorse modern feminism and encourage more diversity within pageants. The Miss America Pageant was founded in 1921 by a group of male hotel owners in Atlantic City who wanted to keep the business flowing after Labor Day. It included several young women competing for the title of the winner of “A National Beauty Pageant”. The first victor of the competition was 15-year-old Margaret Gorman. The pageant continued to develop over the years.
The 2016 Miss America Contest allowed fifty two women to compete for the honor of being crowned as the most tantalizingly beautiful woman in America. However, unlike previous years this pageant featured a contestant who exemplifies compassion and intelligence on and off of the stage in addition to being physically stunning. She galvanized a social movement that brought awareness to a profession within our nation that has been misinterpreted and underappreciated by the public for decades. Kelly Johnson, Miss Colorado, stood in front of millions of viewers during the televised talent portion of the contest wearing navy blue scrubs, and a stethoscope draped around her neck. Johnson waved to the cheering audience, and began her monologue with:
In order to enter a beauty pageant, there are certain qualifications that a contestant has to have. Most of the time women are the prime candidates for these type of beauty pageants. James Chambers who describes the qualifications for both Miss USA and Miss Universe says that the contestants have to be between 18 to 28 years old. They are not allowed to be married and have kids. To be Miss Universe the women have to win in their nations pageant, for Miss Usa they need to win in their state pageant, and the winner represents United States in Miss Universe pageant (Chambers). The women have to go through a long process in order to participate. For Miss Earth and Miss America they have the same age requirement, and they cannot be married as well. However, to be in Miss Earth there are more
After watching Deshauna Barber win the Miss USA 2016 title I was inspired to enter in pageantry myself. I support the ambition and confidence that Miss Washington Teen instills in girls, and I can only dream of becoming apart of it. And because i believe, i must work for everything; i searched for a pageant online to enter, and this is the best fit for
It is the 20th century and we are still fighting for equal rights for male and female. Women have been protesting for years, wanting the same options for extracurricular activities as men. Beauty pageants are unfair because well women are fighting for the same opportunities, they are competing in pageants that are exclusively for women; this leads to a level of discrimination. Beauty pageants violate gender equality and contradict the disagreement women have been fighting for years. There are two sides to every story and many believe that beauty pageants can be beneficial.
Year after year it never fails—another girl whose parents are well represented in the community has taken the local pageant crown. True winners and qualified young women tend to be overlooked. Like my close friends and me, a fair chance was never offered. At rehearsals, I often questioned my character when I overheard girls criticizing peers they envied.
