Mission statements are important as they can clearly define to its readers the goals and directions for the existence of any organization. The mission statement is an important piece of literature letting the public know what the organization is looking to accomplish and what it already does. In the case study in the textbook entitled Public Administration on page 319, the mission statement for the city of Oakland is used in an example.
Being that the city of Oakland, in the case study, is a public interest, it is important to have a mission statement that clearly defines what the city or an organization is looking to accomplish. Some of which are maintaining a clear direction about organizational priorities, goals, and objectives, (Denhardt, Denhardt, & Blanc, 313, 2014). Defining how goals and objectives would make this mission statement have so much more to say. One example can be outlining what programs are used for fair treatment such as corporate social responsibility. Another can be the use of a respect and esteem bi-annual training program, which outlines the unlawfulness of harassment. There are other areas of concern that are not covered by its current statement.
Some of the areas that need addressing are how city interacts with the citizens of Oakland. One such example can be focusing on closeness to citizens. With that in mind the mission statement needs to address that by demonstrating to the public that it will be open to communicate with the public. One way that the Oakland can do this is by sharing information and soliciting feedback to achieve goals. Another would be the addressing the issue of trust. In today’s world it can be quite challenging building trust in the minds of the public, due to the recent scrutiny that law enforcement officials have
