Mixed Martial Arts should not be banned.
When you hear of UFC (Ultimate fighting championship) or MMA (mixed martial arts) many people would probably think of a brutal, bloody, barbaric cage fight with no rules, battling until someone is knocked out cold. However, this image or stereotype is far from what MMA really is. Early last year there was much controversy when the Andrews’ Government legalised cage fighting in Victoria. This ruling enabled the UFC 193 to be held at Etihad stadium in November 2015 which brought over 40 million dollars to the local economy. Anti-violence advocates called for these UFC events to be banned in Australia. These narrow minded people have a very distorted view of what UFC actually involves. Mixed martial arts

Horse-riding, baseball, lacrosse and even softball are all more dangerous then MMA; resulting in far more injuries and deaths. In America just in 6 years, 77 children have died from being hit in the chest by a baseball. Many more have died riding bikes. Does this mean we should ban baseball and bike riding? No, of course not. That would be ridiculous. Just like it would be ridiculous to ban MMA for the same reason. In a 10 year study by the University of Alberta in Canada, comparing the data from medical examinations between MMA fighters and boxers; the results proved that boxing was by far the more dangerous sport. Boxers were more likely to experience serious harm from concussions and other head trauma, loss of consciousness during fights, eye injuries, smashed noses and broken bones. Other studies, including one by John Hopkins University in Maryland, USA had similar results, finding that boxing was in fact far more dangerous than MMA. On average about 8 boxers die every year due to serious concussions and head trauma while only 4 people ever, have died in a UFC match. MMA is far less dangerous than many other sports that we play, so logically there is no reason for it to be …show more content…
Competitors know the potential risks and injuries they could sustain. It is a regulated, controlled environment and the chance for them to be critically injured is very unlikely. Do we really want a nanny state dictating what we can and can’t watch? If we ban MMA the fighting will be driven underground and in turn it will not be regulated, leading to more injuries and deaths. Put simply, to those who oppose it being shown on television or are against people going to watch it live; if you don’t like it, don’t watch
Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. Mixed Martial Arts (or MMA) is a combat sport that combines every and any fighting technique in a bout. To look closer at this sport as a discourse community, we will break down the sport into 5 different categories. We will take a look at the goals and values of MMA, the typical fighting styles or genres of MMA, the general rules of MMA, tasks and roles of each MMA community, and the targeted audience of MMA.
Some people are arguing not to ban contact sports. And I also agree. They say that the person who is playing should know what will come there way, or what will happen. If they know that they are going to get injured, and don't want to then they should know that they shouldn't play. But, if they mind playing the contact sports, and know it may lead to death, then it is their decision to play.
The fact is that every fan wants to see action, not a couple guys dancing around. This is why the UFC is only interested in fighters who are willing to compete and put on a good show. Whether someone pays the money to watch an event in person, or watch an event on pay-per-view, they expect to see an actual competition. If all they see is two men dancing around trying to wear each other out, they are going to start losing interest in the sport. This is what is happening in boxing today. The question to be asked shouldn 't be if MMA is dominant over professional boxing. The question should be why boxing is still legal? The final facet of the two sports I want to discuss is safety. Both sports are sanctioned by an athletic commission that can approve, deny, revoke, or suspend all licenses for unarmed combat. The fight takes place with a referee in the ring, or the cage, with the fighters. Doctors are always on hand as well. These measures
In Joyce Carol Oates’, The Cruelest Sport, she argues that boxing is a cruel and savage sport and that it should not be practiced or even considered a sport. The title of this work The Cruelest sport leads to the questions: Why is it the cruelest sport? Is it because of the physical injuries? Or is it because of the corruption? Oates argues that because the ultimate goal of boxing is to injury someone, it is a barbaric sport. Boxing is the only sport where two men climb into a ring and fight each other like animals. Boxing is harmful because of the injuries, wounds, and deaths that occur during every fight. Victory is usually when one of the fighters is knocked out. Victory is usually achieved when one fighter is unconscious. Boxers fight
The viewers are the main encouragement for boxers to keep fighting or to fight harder. “They don’t come out to see a tee party,” said Mike Jacobs evenly. “They come out to see the knockout. They come out to see a man hurt. If they think anything else, they’re kidding themselves” (qtd. in
The dynamics of the mixed martial arts industry don’t assume competitive rivalry. The companies in this industry have to look into differentiating their product and getting their sport recognized. One might try to differentiate their product by appealing to be more family friendly or appeal to a different type of market. This is the way companies in the mixed martial arts industry have to compete; they have to make their sport slightly different to attract fans.
When comparing the money that the fighters make to the pain they endure as a result of fighting, it is worth it. UFC events are viewed all over the world and are highly profitable. The fighters do make enough money to compensate for the physical pain they will endure from the fight. A monetized utilitarian would advocate that the money outweighs the negative aspects of the fights so the UFC should not be banned.
* Even though MMA might be a very physical and bloody sport that shouldn’t keep you from wanting to watch it and be a part of it.
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have boxing
Without fighting the sport would not be the same it would be a lot more entertaining for the fans to watch because there would be no more contact. The coaches of the teams will pay the people getting in fights non stop a lot of money
Many states have banned MMA fighting because of the fatal injuries. One of those states is New York. This state is known for having popular sporting events, bringing in lots of money. Although it has lost money do to banning MMA, 68% of New York State believes MMA should be not be legalized for being too violent and dangerous (“Mixed Martial
Boxing - a violent cage fight, or a crowd pleasing sport? Boxing is a high intensified sport that can be seen as helping the fighter in life or permanently damaging the fighters future. Many say that boxing is one of the safest sports; however, boxing can leave permanent brain damage from constant punches to the skull. The sport boxing is for managers to earn money while their fighter is in the ring fighting against another human until one gives up, or gets knocked out. A fight could be the end of one’s career, or even one’s life. Boxing should be banned because the money earned does not trump the risk of death, the mixed messages from fighters in the ring confuse the laws regarding assault, and the constant punches to and athletes head leaves permanent damage.
Time limits, protective gloves, banned techniques lists, and many more were added in order for society to accept it and this allowed the UFC to advertise more as a sport instead of a blood-sport. The only problem after the UFC and MMA became legal in many states was attracting attention. In the early days the sport was not profitable due to the ban in almost all U.S states so the original owners sold the company. Dana White, Frank, and Lorenzo Fertitta “…spent $2 million to buy the Ultimate Fighting Championship…” (Anderson). White and the Fertitta brothers were millions in the hole trying to make the company profitable and were ready to sell but, than they came up with the idea of the Ultimate Fighter. The Ultimate Fighter was a reality show where a group of athletes were all put in one house where they would only focus on fighting. This show allowed people to view how the fighters trained and learn the various personalities each athlete had. The finale of this show is what resurrected the sport. The contest between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar was a “three 5-min. rounds of compelling intensity” ( Chua-Eoan et al.). In this fight both contestants put everything on the line which resulted in a brawl than an actual technical fight. This however attracted viewers for as the fight went on, viewers started tuning in. This Fight is regarded as the most important fight in UFC history (Mannion). This led to
In 1997, the injury rate predicted in the sport of boxing was 7,257 injuries and 10.8% of those injuries were estimated to have affected people between the ages of five and fourteen. 1.3% of those injuries were predicted to be in the ages between zero and four, and 55.8% of those injuries were in the group of ages from fifteen to twenty-four.( National Electronic Injury Surveillance System et al., Estimates for Sports Injuries 1997) Boxing can be a safe and fun sport as long as it is practiced and played properly. Boxing should not be banned because it can help relieve stress, and like running it is a good addition for getting in shape. It should also not be banned because boxers know the risks and they still choose to do it ; it is their
