The main purpose of this paper is to reflect upon a methodological approach towards in what extent does ontological position influence mixed methods research which involves both collecting and analyzing the combination of quantitative and qualitative data. The researcher will employ a mixed method research method to study the effects of maltreatment and how those maltreatments correlate with psychosocial behaviors. The author has chosen this method because she wants to explore internal and external behaviors of children who have experienced childhood trauma, also the researcher has personal reasons to explore this population. This method of research is more appropriate to get a clear picture of how the trauma experienced by children impacts their behaviors, in a mixed method research design, we use open-ended questions and surveys to really understand the problems associated with childhood trauma.

I raise some cautionary issues in this paper by critiquing the methodology in the journal article titled “Researching men: the politics and possibilities of a qualitative mixed-methods approach” published by Meth and McClymont (2011).

Quantitative research is considered to be the use of numbers. In the use of a quantitative study, the researcher test objective theories by examining the conjunction among variables. The variables used can be measured on instruments, so that numbered data can be used and analyzed (Creswell, 2008). Qualitative research is mainly used to explore and understand human or social problems. The process of qualitative studies includes questions and procedures; and the data is collected byway of participant’s settings. It allows the researcher to study an issue in great detail and depth, as well as not allowing data collection to be constrained by predetermined data. Mixed methods research combines quantitative and qualitative methods and it involves philosophical assumptions. This form of study includes collecting and analyzing data from a quantitative and qualitative perspective. It is believed that mixed methods research is a great method for practicing researchers who would like to bridge the schism between quantitative and qualitative research (Onwuegbuzie & Leech, 2004a). Even though these methods are different, they all involve philosophical assumptions and distinct methods or procedures (Cresswell, 2009).

A mixed method study would be an ideal research method to examine school bullying. I am interested in reducing school bullying. A mixed method study uses qualitative and quantitative data. This research could include a quantitative survey and could also implicate qualitative interviews or focus groups. Quantitative surveys for example, can help the investigator to conclude that students who score low on their exams are the same students who are victims of bullying. Qualitative interviews for instance, can assist the researcher to know about the student’s feeling about bullying. In addition, interviewing the parents and teachers can assist the investigator to know more about the students who are being bullied and conclude a solution to the problem.

Mixed methodology uses the numerical portion of the quantitative study design in combination with the descriptive aspect of the qualitative study. There are many similarities between these two designs, which make them compatible with each other.
