Mixture and Compound Differences 1 One difference between mixtures and compounds is that compounds have a certain composition as opposed to mixtures that can be varied. Chemical compounds are made up of at least two elements that are bonded together in a fixed mass ratio that can only be split apart by chemical means. And a mixture is a substance created by merging at least two different materials with no chemical reaction. Also compounds can only be separated if they are destroyed. But the elements in mixtures can be physically separated from each other easily. Another dissimilarity is that mixtures are usually heterogeneous whereas compounds are always homogeneous. Compounds can only be separated by a chemical reaction. The record of compounds on Earth is practically endless. And compounds are represented with formulas while elements use symbols for their representation. Ionic and Covalent Bonds 3 The two types of chemical bonds are ionic bonds and covalent bonds. With an ionic bond, atoms are bound together by oppositely-charged ions. And with a covalent bond, the atoms are bound by shared electrons because neither atom is strong enough by itself. If the electron is shared equally it is nonpolar but, usually an electron will be more attracted to one atom over another thus becoming polar. Also covalent bonds happen between two metals and are liquids or gases. Ionic bonds occur with one metal and one nonmetal and are solid. Covalent bonds have low polarity as well as boiling and melting points while ionic bonds have high polarity, boiling and melting points. Ionic Compounds 4 The metals on the left side of the Periodic Table are strongly electropositive and are ready to lose electrons. And the non-metals on the right side of the table are in return strongly electronegative are prepared to accept electrons.
