Abstract
The paper discusses the importance of mobile operating systems in today’s world, while also giving a brief overview of the important mobile OS’s that are popular in the US. Advantages and disadvantages are analyzed within each mobile OS and will give an insight as to which mobile OS caters to a user’s or business need. This is done by evaluating the smartphone market (market share, hardware sales, etc.) and comparing each mobile OS to determine which one provides the best features and customization that’ll cater to each user’s needs.

HP webOS was HP’s attempt to get into the mobile industry, when Palm first initially built webOS. It did not catch on among consumers and never gained enough market share to be competitive. Android is Google’s take on how mobile operating systems should be; open and user customizable. The iOS mobile OS, formerly known as iPhone OS, was unveiled on January 9, 2007 at the Macworld Conference & Expo. It was then later released to the public with the release of the first iPhone later that June. The iPhone was one of the first smartphones that revolutionized the smartphone industry and set a new standard to how smartphones should be today and the vision for the future. iOS quickly became so popular that Apple began to use the iOS to operate other devices such as the iPod touch, iPad 1 + 2, and the Apple TV. Shortly after the release of the iPhone, Apple then announced that a Software Development Kit (SDK) was under development and would be in the hands of developers soon. This led to an influx of developers rushing to the mobile OS to find new and intuitive ways that users can interact with their phone through third party applications. Combined with its ease of use, rich design, and well-organized application system through Apple App Store makes the Iphone an appealing platform for development of other smartphones. In the most recent market analysis from the NPD Group, iOS has assumed control of 43 percent of smartphone sales. Smartphones are a mobile technology that utilizes an advanced operating system in portable devices. Currently, the advanced operating systems employed on smartphones are IOS and Android. IOS was developed by Apple and is exclusive to its mobile devices only. However, Android is an open source operating system that is utilized by various smartphones on the market. Nevertheless, current smartphones employing either operating system encompasses the capabilities of a cell phone, camera, computer, mp3 player, external hard drive, GPS, and internet connection. This collection of technology on one device makes it very advantageous for businesses and convenient for individuals. According to Smith (2015), this is supported by the fact that 64% of American adults have a smartphone for various tasks.
In today’s society cellular devices are not only popular in the United States, but in many other countries worldwide. Not only do cell phones contribute to one’s personal life, but business use as well. Most people have hectic lives, and using a device to help schedule appointments, send out mass text messages, or even remind you to call back your boss, is unimaginably convenient. On June 29, 2007, Apple Inc. launched sales of the iPhone at Apple and AT&T stores across the country. Many hours earlier, enthusiastic customers lined up outside stores to get the first iPhone in their hands. The iPhone is more than just a breakthrough mobile-phone device. It is a strategy that may expand Apple's sphere of influence. Apple elegantly combined a mobile phone, mp3 player, and personal digital assistant (PDA) on the same machine characterized by its unique, innovative design.
An operating system is the core of any system software. It manages the resources including the memory and the io devices and provides the interface to interact with the system. The operating systems that are used in computers to manage the computer resources and provide the direct user interface to the computer system are the operating systems of a computer whereas the mobile operating system is the operating system specially designed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. These devices are designed with a limited amount of communication and computing abilities. They are smaller in size, with little memory and processing power compared to the computer operating system. Thus, the mobile operating system is lightweight. Some of the mobiles are iOS, Android, Windows Phones, Black-Berry OS, webOS and Symbian [3].
The modern “smartphone” is becoming the most desired communication device available. Nearly all businesspeople utilize the technology to stay current on their work tasks, and nearly every common layperson is impelled to possess these devices for entertainment and service applications. “Smartphones have… a real Web browser and a variety of other services, including GPS, a camera and a wide variety of other applications” (Sinisalo 6). The capabilities of modern cell phones have undoubtedly marked an unprecedented shift in convenient communication, entertainment, and service technology.
Also, smartphone applications have good availability. We do not have to worry about how we find the application. In this era, we can find anything we want easily. We can find it on the worldwide network, the internet, where we can share anything with other people in the world. We just need to find a site. The smartphone is beneficial because it has two functions. It can be a computing device and a communication device. For example, we can send an e-mail with this device, send a SMS and call someone and we can use it for chat with another user. Smartphones, and even other electronic devices are the best invention that has been found. Smartphones are very complex and sophisticated because it has many advantages such as availability, and operating system. It is important for people who need tools to support their duty.
Have you ever wonder what phone you should get, an iPhone or Android? Those are the main two phones that in the competition for phone that people will buy. They blow HTC,Nokia, and companies out of the water. Android and iPhone are the top two money-making phone brands.(Android: Changing the Mobile Landscape, Jan.-March 2011) Being an iPhone owner i’ve wondered what it would be like owning an android. This is a topic that many smartphone owners debate when buying or owning the other. Or whether to switch when the next upgrade comes around. Even though Americans see countless commercials about these smartphones it’s still a tough decision. This is because there are some aspects that make iPhones and Androids different and alike. From the way the phones Appearance, features, and ability to last.
Mobile devices like smart phones and tablets are what is most in demand right now in these times. They are basic working tools that meet with many more features than traditional phone. When technology advances quickly they are generating concerns such as security and privacy. Users need to be aware that there are certain threats like viruses and malware, just ask if you can see the Smartphone are safe. I will show an analysis of two operating systems that are currently the most widely used here: Android and iOS.
Apparently, this came as a surprise to the Apple employees’ who were working on the iPhone-destined software apps, and to Steve himself (Sorensen). As a response to this, Apple simply created more devices free from Google's reach. In fact, the iPhone opened up new doors for many consumers, which really enhanced its fame (Sorensen). For the first time, consumers had a mobile device that made it easy to read books and magazines, as well as watch movies and television shows (Sorensen), along with enhancing efficient communication across the world’s geographical locations.
Apple Inc. has launched its iPhone in January 2007 (telegraph) as a new product in the market with latest technology and it was the first multi touch smartphone adding the feature of iPod and received an overwhelmed response by selling 270000 units. It had created a new record for a new company like apple, iPhone had laid a stepping stone for the success of Apple and till this time iPhone is the best seller product of Apple Inc. during first quarter of 2016 apple has sold over 74 million iPhones worldwide. (statista, 2016).
Apple is a company known for creative, disruptive new technologies and business models. One of its most recent products, the iPhone, represents this kind of technology. Apple opened up its iPhone platform to third-party developers shortly after releasing it. They provide what’s known as the iPhone SDK (software development kit) to developers free of charge.
