John Meddings – Developing Yourself and Others Unit: 8600-311
My name is John Meddings I work for Braintree District Council within the Licensing Team. The main purpose of the team is to administer, issue and enforce licences, permits and consents. My role as the Principle Licensing Officer involves being the Council’s technical expert in the field of licensing and overseeing the functions of the Licensing Team. I am also heavily involved in the coaching, mentoring and development of junior staff.

In order to evaluate my SWOT findings I asked for feedback from two members of my team, they were able to confirm that the identified strengths and weaknesses were ones that they could see in me as a person and as a work colleague.
My colleague’s SWOT test revealed weaknesses such as confidence in dealing customers over the phone, time management, technical knowledge and public speaking / presenting. Again, by transferring this information to the PDP, we can identify how to action the weaknesses and look at ways to remedy the weaknesses into strengths with coaching or further training. After carrying out my colleagues SWOT test I was able to give positive feedback with regards to the identified strengths and weaknesses the test had highlighted. I was further able to give advice on some of the other areas raised by the test such as threats and opportunities. Both of us agreed the tests were accurate and were helpful tools to use for development and self-awareness.
