“Simply put, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” From Bell Hooks is the clear and concise definition that supports how feminism is a movement that exists to end systematic and societal sexism. From the beginning of the Suffragette movement and onwards to the Women’s Liberation Movement, feminism has existed to fight for equality. Over the years and through the evolution of feminism, the ideas and main goals of this movement have certainly shifted but the essence of equality in a societal, political, and economic sense should still be prevalent. The ultimate goal in feminism has always been equality because within current North America, systemic blockades are in place preventing females from fulfilling an equal life to males. Modern day feminism has been pushed off course from its foundations and is in dire need of reformation because the feminist movement should be unified to fight for equality. While feminism is a movement that strives for equality, groups within the movement often feel the pressure of their other identities; due to mixed interests feminism is a word that harbors mixed associations and connotations. Those that choose to identify with this word, would hope that it is inclusive to anyone and everyone, but there have been certain rifts within the community. Perhaps in the past much of the forces working against feminism had been from the outside but because of the sheer size of such a movement there were bound to be disagreements within. Mainstream media into the conversation about Feminism. The Extremism of the radicals have brought the attention of media coverage and have brought this idea of what modern feminism is to the rest of the world. Feminism is at a point where people are choosing to leave behind the movement because they believe Feminism is no longer about Equality. Actions of
Radical Feminists and conflict within Feminism garner interest for media and the public which ultimately pulls away from the real focus of feminism. News outlets like The Huffington Post and Fox News have produced articles that discuss the case against Feminism which are read regularly by millions of people. The power of media is heavy in this modern age but re-enforcing the Feminist attitude with studies and proper educational information can discredit these media outlets. Education on Feminism is essential in spreading the correct information of such movement.
