Now that we have defined ideology for this study as, “A consistent coherent set of baseline beliefs that seek to both explain and shape our world,” we can begin to apply this definition to modern political groups to better understand what their ideology is. There are three modern day ideologies that are widely recognized, these being conservatism, liberalism, and libertarianism. Although, in this case, the focus will be on conservatism. There are many modern organizations who claim the their ideology to be conservative. These include the Cato Institute, Republican Party Platform, American Enterprise Institute, Freedom House, and the Heritage Foundation, which will be the five institutions analyzed. As expected, each of these organizations mission statements vary slightly, however they are bonded together …show more content…
Everyone of these organizations mentioned individual freedom or liberty in their mission statement. It’s reasonable then, to claim this as the form of freedom that is most consistent. However, a close second is free enterprise, which is mentioned by the Heritage Institute, American Enterprise Institute, Republican Party Platform, and the Cato Institute. The exception being Freedom House, which proclaims it “is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedom and democracy around the world.” (Freedom). So while they give no mention to free enterprise, they do mention another key point made by each of these groups, a limited government. Which is mentioned specifically by three out of the five. Although, it can be assumed that this particular value follows from the value of freedom in the sense that less government equates to increased freedom. So, limited governments inclusion is can be considered a subset of the deeper value of freedom, and that these organization are attempting to emphasize the extent to which they believe in freedom by showing specific ways that they believe this trait is
There are three political ideologies that are addressed by Cullen and Gilbert (2012). The first one is the conservative ideology. Conservatives place their main emphasis on traditional values, and tend to have issues when someone tries to change tradition. According to conservatives, maintaining social order is an important way to protect society as a whole. Individuals are on their own when it comes to the ideology of conservatives. They have the assumption that individuals are responsible for their own actions, good or bad. Conservatives will protect innocent citizens, but will focus on the punishment of guilty one rather than rehabilitation.
In the first half of the historical nonfiction novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini endures many hardships in his life. These struggles make me feel sorry for him and the trouble he is in. As a child, he was unable to fit in, his peers considered him “a bad kid”. Louie would unfortunately steal things on the streets, and consistently get into fights with others, commonly for no reason at all. However, the positive side to his actions, was the speed and running ability he built up. I felt relieved when his brother encouraged his participation on the school track team. In a nutshell, Louie was a natural star. His large, skinny frame and long frame gave him ideal running characteristics. No longer was Louie a bad kid, he was a
While taking the course Contemporary Public Issues, I have gained a vast amount of knowledge on the subject of political ideologies and have seen the different ideologies explained, criticized, and commended from several diverse viewpoints as I participated in the class discussions and read the selected course readings. These readings and class discussions have greatly influenced my ideological preferences. After evaluating the assigned course readings and reflecting on the class discussions that were held, I have come to the conclusion that I possess both liberal and conservative ideological preferences including: government action should take place to ensure equal opportunity, change should happen slowly over time, and religion should be a private issue. Although I possess both liberal and conservative ideological preferences, I feel that I lean more towards liberal tendencies when it comes to
Whereas a strongly conservatives averaged neutral on Ingroup / loyalty statements, while agreeing with fairness / Reciprocity, Harm / Care and Purity / Sanctity and strongly agreeing with Authority / Respect(Graham, Haidt and Nosek 2009).
I had never heard of any of these organizations; however, I looked up the Heritage Foundation for this discussion. It was established in 1973 and is known as the “right-wing think tank” (“Heritage Foundation,” 2017). There are over 500,000 members to this day that help “ensure that policy solutions, which make life better for you and all Americans, advance in Washington and across the country” (“The Heritage Foundation,” 2017). Some personal strengths of the Heritage Foundation are that it is known for their beliefs in individual freedom; free enterprise; and its robust national defense. I feel that individuals need their freedom, to a certain extent, and that there needs to be a free enterprise. Of course, we should all know how important
Context: 2014- This is during a time of great political and social divide in American culture. The clear rift in political thought and hard-lined party divisions described as “left” and “right” are becoming more
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, directed by Gore Verbinski, is one of the most influential pieces of cinema in the disney movie franchise. The movie was well received by the majority of people that viewed it. However, not everyone was as impressed with the movie, like film critic Roger Ebert for example. While Ebert, at the time working as a film critic for Chicago Sun-Times, gave the movie three stars, there are some critiques that are incredibly incorrect. The article focuses a lot on the stellar performances of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, Jack Sparrow and Barbossa respectively, while making light of the respectable performance of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. He also spends a good segment of his review bashing the action scenes and deeming them pointless based on the plot of the movie. Overall, Roger Ebert believes the movie was decent, but went on for far too long, calling it, “a nice little 90-minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (rogerebert.com). There is an argument to be made about Roger Ebert’s rollercoaster ride of a review on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially concerning his opinions on the performances of some of the actors and the fighting.
There are two major political aspects in our society today, liberals and conservatives. Both of these ideologies share a similar goal in which they both try to find solutions to the society’s issues. But the way liberals and conservatives perceive a problem and try to find solutions is what differentiates them both. Liberals tend to favor a change to promote growth, while conservatives on the other hand stick with traditions and religious values and are not in favor of a change. Although liberals and conservatives share a similar goal, they have opposing perspectives on social, economic and political issues.
With a large college organization it is important to always incorporate new things and provide many opportunities for involvement, that is why ideology is also very important with the power in my organization. Ideology and power go hand in hand; power can be seen as persuading people by threat while ideology helps shape peoples ideas and help them understand “what exists, what is good and what is possible (Therborn, 1980)” (Mumby,
The conservative movement has played a crucial role in American politics in the post war era. Ronald Story and Bruce Laurie indentify various elements of the American conservatism. These elements include challenging authoritarian governments and modernist culture, upholding tradition, Christian religion and the rule of law, defending western civilization, and supporting republicanism. American conservatism has been characterized by competing ideologies and tension throughout history. The Americans who are politically liberal and economically conservative favor free trade, minimal state intervention, low taxes, and a small government. On the other hand, conservatives hold the view that American traditional values are normally undermined by
Different ideologies tend to appeal to different demographic characteristics such as gender, class, race, etc. because a person’s background will affect which system of ideas they most closely align with. Liberalism and conservatism, for example, are ideologies that regularly contradict each other, because they appeal to different demographics based upon many factors such as class, race, gender, religion, etc. The general worldview of liberalism is that people have individual rights and liberty, while promoting progress. On the other hand, conservatism places greater importance of keeping tradition and strict regulation of rules. In determining the extent of appeal to different demographics, one must assess the ways in which both ideologies
One thing that took me by surprise was Grossmann’s assertion that liberal advocacy groups outnumber conservative ones. I had always assumed the opposite, because interest groups conjured for me traditional lobbyists like the NRA, Big Tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and corporate interests. But after reading that analysis I looked up liberal and progressive advocacy groups and learned that while they may not have the financial resources of some conservative lobbying groups, there are large numbers of small, grassroots organizations that work as a counterpoint to those
The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe inspired my creative project because I am a visual learner and I found quite a bit of interest in this specific writing. The way this story caught my attention was the dark the dark tone that Poe had used, which is different than the other works that I have read thus far. In the short story there is a plague and kills many in this kingdom and because of this Prince Prospero had locked him and a couple of others in his kingdom to hide from the Red Death. He then throws a party since they “safe” from the plague and that is when the Red Death appears at his party. He felt threaten by this and tried to kill the red figure, but his reaction was caused him the ultimate price, “There was a sharp cry—and the dagger dropped
Historian Russell Kirk believes there are six basic tenets of all conservatism. To begin conservatives believe "in a transcendent order or body of natural law, which rules society as well as conscience. Political problems at their roots are religious and or moral problems" (9). The ideal that religion and morality can have influence over political and social problems is widely seen in the United States. The Republicans are often the choice of people with conservative Christian ideology.
Upon entering my first semester at Southern Nazarene University I could not have told you my political ideology. I knew what my opinions, observations, expectations, and ideals were, but did not know the proper ideology that would define them. Through several courses that I have taken, I have become more informed as to the role that I would like to see the government take throughout society as a whole and in the economy. Upon reading the section of ideology in American Government and Politics Today: the Essentials I learned that the correct term for my ideology is right-wing Conservatism. I would like to see the government take action if necessary in the economy, yet let
