Balance selection is a process when individuals with exceptional value of traits are selected against. Balance selection creates stability due to the reason that the value of the traits remains sustained over generations. Balance selection keeps a genetic variation or difference for trait in the population, for example balance selection keep a trait poised to evolve if the environment began to alter rapidly. Human lineage did not evolve wider hips and birth canals for babies with larger heads to thrive. A cesarean section is opposing human lineage and balance selection because it removes the disadvantages that large headed babies faced during the birth process. In the article it says that if more large-headed babies survive birth, these individuals are likely to grow up to have similarly proportioned babies themselves, and it could change the evolutionary process from balancing selection to directional selection leading to babies with larger heads over the course of many generations.
