In Greek mythology, the genius, of poets, musicians, dancers, and artists is said to be inspired by a sisterhood of nine mythical female deities, each of whom act as the wellspring of cultural life, energy, and inspiration. Accordingly, these female gods purportedly dominate the creative moments of any artist's imagination. In turn, artists use their inspiration to create the various elements of culture such as music and literature. Because music is a temporal commodity, culture can be captured and made to serve God in Christian worship; however, God can never be captured and made to serve culture. This fundamental truth constantly eludes the thinking of pastors and church leaders today. Today's Church no longer ministers in Elizabethan territory, yet churches stubbornly feed off the Elizabethan animal even though it is now just a carcass. Consequently, there has been so little recent evolution of the historical context of modern hymnody! Is not Eric Clapton's gift of music the same gift that God gave Beethoven? Does not God work out his purpose most powerfully in Christian worship within the norms of the host culture? Isn't music temporal and thus constantly in transition....and disposable? Habitualists will argue incessantly that older hymns, no matter how obsolete, …show more content…
Around the turn of the Twentieth Century, out of the loose partially improvised music sung by blacks, the Blues was born and subsequently evolved into the smorgasbord of musical styles indigenous to today's culture. This new genre spawned the rhythm section (i.e. guitar, bass, keyboard, and percussion), which continues to anchor every other form of modern music. Each of these musical languages commands a large and loyal following. Each form, in union with the others contained in the contemporary musical landscape, represents a realistic and fitting alternative to classic

Music in the 1930s During the deepest economic downturn in the United States, the Great Depression, music and dancing made people forget the hardships of their daily lives. Research shows that listening to music can improve your mood. Music has been used as a therapy for centuries, especially in the 1930s ("How Music Changes Your Mood"). Popular music during the 1930s included many upbeat and fun genres like swing, jazz, and country/western.
Rock and Roll was everything the suburban 1950s were not. While parents of the decade were listening to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Big Bands, their children were moving to a new beat. In fact, to the horror of the older generation, their children were twisting, thrusting, bumping, and grinding to the sounds of Rock and Roll. This generation of youth was much larger than any in recent memory, and the prosperity of the era gave them money to spend on records and phonographs. By the end of the decade, the phenomenon of rock and roll helped define the difference between youth and adulthood.
Having looked at the emotional effect this music has on people, it is now worth looking at the specific churches within the Sydney diocese to get a greater understanding on a smaller level as to how the music is played and what effect it might have. To do this, there have been visits to said churches to see what goes on, this is like a large scale of the participant observation methodology. This was a very useful in developing an understanding for how different churches of the same denomination were going about music as part of the service. There is some clear information that has come out from attending these churches. Firstly, and worth noting, the churches run very similar services, across most of the churches the structure of songs is the
African American music has influenced every genre in the music industry today. From Jazz music all the way to Rap, it has cultivated different cultures throughout the world in a very unique way. Rhythm and Blues had been around for a long time. And it was first introduced in the late 1940’s. The term was created to replace the designation “race music”, which until then was the standard catch-all phrase (About Entertainment). Rhythm and Blues music has an interesting history which has greatly evolved over the years.
Rhythm and blues, also known today as “R & B”, has been one of the most influential genres of music within the African American Culture, and has evolved over many decades in style and sound. Emerging in the late 1940's rhythm and blues, sometimes called jump blues, became dominant black popular music during and after WWII. Rhythm and blues helped embody what was unique about black American culture and validate it as something distinctive and valuable.
A majority of the major artists incorporated both secular and sacred music as a part of their repertoire, most notably Ray Charles. When reading articles on how to “properly” play the Hammond B-3 while conducting a church service, it feels as if you are reading a law book full of every mandate that you shall not disobey. Orville Foster elevates the importance in the selection of accompaniment in that the music glorifies prayer and, if done in poor taste can “obliterate the thought and the meaning of the prayer itself . In order that one may feel the sentiments of the music and its’ relation to God through the facilitation of the music, one must “weave a rich tapestry of multicolored chord progressions, always soft and never obtrusive.” This
As a way to fight against such evils, evangelical groups began to create alternative choices to the satanic unholy offensive music. The cultural phenomenon known as “Contemporary Christian Music” features Christian rock music, which includes Christian heavy metal, among many other styles of music that reintroduce themes that reinforce the five fundamentals. With songs of Christ’s divine forgiveness and personal salvation that are backed up by similar musical accompaniment that their secular counterparts sing but minus all the sex, drugs, parties, and other worldly activities. However, the music industry has made newer developments that tone down they blatant Christian themes.
Culture: I was interested in the definition of “Latin.” I find it interesting because of all the confusion that comes about when this subject is discussed. Many groups of individuals claim to be “Latin”, making it difficult for some culture to take sole possession of “Latin” music.
This premise is predicated on the hypothesis that music plays an independent and important role within scripture itself; that is to be an elevated carrier for liturgy and prayer, the use of which is mandated by God for corporate worship. Both corporate worship and individual faith would suffer if music were removed. As an act of worshipping obedience, and a way of more readily understanding and relating to God, we will examine
Nowadays the blues revolve around the meaning of sadness but doesn’t have a true message of fighting for survival or deprivation of freedom. In the process of searching for the modern day blues, it was discovered that the music is compiled by mostly Caucasian artist compared to the past where it was conceived by blacks to prompt their practices and beliefs.
House, Techno, and Trance are subgenres of electronic dance music. Electronic dance music became mainstream in the 1970s. The Moog synthesizer which was released in the mid 1960s is the first iconic instrument of electronic music. The 1970s can be described as the synthpop and disco era in which, Kraftwerk was a significant German band made in 1970 who used rhythmic sounds of bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple and combined it with the futuristic sounds of the Moog synthesizer and vocoder. Giorgio Moroder also used electronic music to capitalize on the growing disco music trend and helped popularized it when he produced tracks for other artists such as Donna Summer and David Bowie. His use of synthesizers introduced the electronic sound
In applying the five criteria of evaluating worship music which are whether it contains biblical truth; theological profundity; poetic richness; musical beauty; and how the music to text enhances rather than obscures or distorts its meaning brings to the forefront that although Christian music is enjoyable and at times comforting there is a need to delve deeper into their formation to see the true beauty and merit it holds
