fter watching director Jacques Tourneur’s 1943 film I Walked with a Zombie, I understood the parallels that existed between this story line and that of Molina and Valentin in The Kiss of the Spider Woman. First of all, much like Jessica, the zombie woman, the two prisoners, especially Molina, are seen as “freaks” in their oppressive society. Molina and Valentin are ostracized by their family members and their communities for being different rather it be due to their sexuality or political beliefs. Also, I saw Jessica’s situation of being trapped inside of her own body as similar to the experiences of Molina and Valentin while being imprisoned. Jessica was continually walking around blank faced and unable to speak her mind or control her own

Even her old friends are not even cordial with her because of an incident that happened at a party.“Her eyes meet mine for a second.”I hate you,” she mouths silently. She had been inside her room by then, for three months” (Findley 76). This is clear evidence that Jessica has isolated herself for prolonged periods of time. These periods of isolation, have caused various issues within social situations, since she does not know how to properly react. Extreme mental and physical isolation has various consequences on one’s mental health that it expressed through their thoughts and behaviours throughout both pieces of literature. It is clear that Jessica is unable to function within society. To be considered able to function and contribute to society as an individual, one has to be able to communicate to others. However, Jessica is unable to do so and Hooker learns this through a conversation he has in town:
When she beholds her appearance in the mirror, she could scarcely understand the atrocity before her. Her

Manuel Puig uses many recurring themes and motifs to convey his views and opinions on many highly political, and also controversial, matters, from his attitude towards Marxism, and his belief that people should be free to express themselves as well as being tolerant of others’ views, to his homosexuality being reflected in one of the two main characters.
The Kiss of the Spider Woman tells us of the story of Molina, a transgender male in jail for perversion of a minor, and Valentin, a political prisoner. As the novel progresses, both characters change through their shared experiences, quarrels, ideology, compassion, care, and eventually, their relationship. Molina’s blatant gayness is evident, while Valentin’s sexuality eventually proves contingent in spite of his apparent masculinity. Despite Valentin’s love for a bourgois, Marta, Molina inflicts a new desire in him. This is plain to see in the last story in the novel: the Spider Woman. While in a dream produced by an injection of Morphine, Valentin tells his love, Marta, a story about a woman trapped in a web which comes out of her body. Like Molina, the Spider Woman both disgusts and soothes Valentin.

In the case of Amy, her inner-dialog is telling her that she is not good enough and that she is going nowhere. Her negative self talk is affecting her emotions and feelings. She truly does not believe that anything could go her way. She believes that nothing is going to get better, which is common among people who suffer from depression. Amy most likely feels like no one else feels like she does, which is also common with depression. Her assumptions may have even kept her from seeking treatment for so long. She also most likely has the assumption that no matter what she does, she is still going to be a burden on her friends and family. Part of gaining rapport and help Amy will be helping her to challenge her current beliefs.
