During the Renaissance Period the worlds most famous and valued painting was created: The Mona Lisa. In Florence Italy, 1503 Leonardo de Vinci began his magnificent work on this piece. Being a man who was said to have never finished a piece of art he worked on this project for three years and came back to it more than ten years later. He created the Mona Lisa using oil on white Lombardy poplar panel (Mona Lisa Encyclopedia Britannica) The portrait is of Lisa Gheradini wife of Francesco del Gheradini. “Mona” is a polite form to address women in Italian, thus the name, “Mona Lisa.” After da Vinci passed, he gave many of his works of art to his assistant, including the Mona Lisa. King Francis I of France bought it off of him for 4,000 crown (Mona …show more content…
Suspects were taken in for questioning and even arrested (Treasures of the World Mona Lisa). Two years had passed and the thief was finally discovered returning the Mona Lisa to the Louvre in 1913. Employee, Peruggia, was imprisoned for six months for the theft of the painting. Peruggia was an Italian patriot who believed the Mona Lisa should not be kept in France but returned back to where it was created: Italy (Treasures of the World Mona Lisa). During the two years that the piecing was missing, many people tried to pass copies of the Mona Lisa as the real art. This happened so often that the value of the original piece increased dramatically. After the painting had been stolen, there were multiple …show more content…
After a very long overnight flight we arrived in Paris, France and headed straight to the Louvre Museum. Although being very jet lagged, we were eager to finally get to see some of the world’s most famous and valued pieces in art history. Upon first glance of the Mona Lisa, I immediately noticed how bright her face looked outlined by darker elements creating the perfect contrast. Although I had previously read about how this painting seemed as if she were communicating with you, I was still utterly surprised upon seeing this painting in front of my very own eyes. No matter where I was standing, I always felt as though she was looking at me. However, depending on where I stood in reference to the painting, her smile almost seemed to change. Overall, she usually seemed smiling, but other times when I looked directly at her lips, her smile almost faded. I’m not entirely sure how da Vinci achieved this, but it fascinated me
Leonardo da Vinci clearly displayed this idea through his new techniques and styles of portraiture, clearly seen in the Mona Lisa, allowing the evolution of medieval art into modern day artwork. Leonardo da Vinci used things such as Chiaroscuro and sfumato to create a natural landscape and 3D form, first used by him. He used these techniques to create a smooth transition from the figure to landscape, using oil paint and idealism to give the painting a more realistic feel. He used the pyramid design and pillars on either side to focus the viewers on the woman in the portrait, while also using the light and dark tones on the figure to give the background depth. The new colours used as well as the shading and blending of paint give the painting a new sense of realism and
The document shows Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa which is believed to be a portrait of Lisa Gheradini, The wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant. The art in the Renaissance was detailed and beautiful. '' One begins to know the names of the artist… feel stronger emotions in the subjects… see well-defines landscapes, natural folds in drapery, and three-dimensional figures.'' Because the art in the Renaissance had symbolic representation, it was easier to understand the
Listed as having the highest insurance value of a painting in history by Guinness World Records, it would demand upwards to $780 million if it were to go to auction. A painting so transcendent of time, yet so indicative of the Renaissance. Ever since I was very young, I have always been inexplicably enamored by the Mona Lisa. Whether the reason for this deep affection is her soft smile, gentle position, the mystery associated with her through the dreamy background, or a combination; she became the background of my computer, my favorite painting, and my love. So, I was enthralled about the opportunity to read the 2014 book Mona Lisa: A Life Discovered by Dianne Hales. Above the synopsis on the back of the book reads a quote, "Everybody knows her smile, but no one knows her story: meet the woman who became the most recognized artistic subject of all time—Mona Lisa." Recognizing the supreme worth and love devoted to this painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the book explores the mysterious identity of the one of the world 's most recognizable women, and the context surrounding the portrait.
Da Vinci’ s the “Mona Lisa”(c.1519) holds Miss. Zirpolo’s statement to be true. When viewing the piece, one can see the exquisite line work and Foreshortening, to linear perspective. This art form shows his attention to detail and his passion for his work. The “Mona Lisa” (c.1519) is a small piece of artwork that became very popular. To this day the “Mona Lisa”(c.1519) still triumphs over Michelangelo’s “Creation Of Adam” (c.1511), which became a part of the “Sistine Chapel.”(C.1512) When one views “The Mona Lisa” they can see the dark color scale that is used, perhaps to depict an unhappy time. Da Vinci through out this piece is able to use an aerial perspective within the background of this portrait. Da Vinci was the first
The Mona Lisa started in Florence roughly around 1503 and is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine cloth merchant named Francesco del Giocondo, hence the alternative and less known title, La Gioconda. However, Da
Duchamp reproduced “Mona Lisa” in 1919 as just a spoof, but it shocked the people of that time and its final outcome gave birth to a whole new form of Art. The reproduction by Duchamp was titled “L.H.O.O.Q.”, which he describes it is as “She has an hot ass” , is as follows:
With the face turned toward us, however, we get a sense of the personality of the sitter. Northern Renaissance arts such as Hans Memlings A Young Man at Prayer, 1485-1492 had already created portraits of figures in positions similar to the Mona Lisa. Memling had even located them in believable spaces. Leonardo combined these northern innovations with Italian painting's understanding of three dimensionality of the body and the perspectival treatment of the surrounding
and patron king Francois I. Francois preserved the painting in his private quarters at The Palace of Fontainebleau. Then it was passed on to Louis XV he took the Mona Lisa to the Palace of Versailles and then following the portrait was hung in Napoleon’s bedroom in the Tuileries Palace. Later on in the year 1793 the Mona Lisa found a long-lasting home in Paris at the Louvre museum when it open for the first time. Overall, the Mona Lisa is one of Da Vinci’s numerous works of art. Which is a work of genius to wonder at to date. When people first look at her they cannot help, but take notice that she has an intriguing look on her face. The look remains people of a woman that is not cheerful nor unhappy. Her skin is smooth and she has no imperfections,
Leonardo Da vinci painted the “Mona Lisa” in 1503. The artist portrays a young woman, which acquires the concept of feminine youth and more essentially the concept of elegance. In relation to Agnolo firenzuola’s novel “On The Beauty Of Women” , the portrait attributes to major physical characteristics in which is considered to be genuine beauty by the modern man. Seeing the female portraiture of the italian renaissance, Firenzuola implies a specific interpretation by analyzing the modern woman. Through the famous paintings illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci, the Mona Lisa specifically supports the arguments and claims made by the poet’s correspondence to the beauty of women. Along with Da Vinci’s sticking features, the artist paints Firenzuola’s ideal beauty in comparability to the appearance of definitive grace. With his analyzations being extremely aesthetic, Firenzuolo activates criticizing aspects of the proportions of the figure, the placement of the figure’s position and the importance of the half length portrait of the feminine nature in relation to the portraiture of Mona Lisa.
The Mona Lisa has been one of the most debated paintings of all time. The look on the face of the women in this painting leaves a person’s mind wondering. No one really seems to know what this mysterious woman is thinking or feeling. The questions that cannot seem to be answered are what make this painting so famous. The reason for that is because it is raveled in mystery and secrets. All of the small details make the painting stand out by being different from others and the details also make it far more remarkable as well. And surely, the smirk on the face of the Mona Lisa is the major key factor to the painting being so interesting. “Leonardo da Vinci was one of the
A white woman that looks to be in her thirties wearing a dark green renaissance gown sitting sideways stares into my soul. Arms resting on the arm of a chair. Brown curly yet flat hair that goes down pass her shoulders parted in the middle. Her name is Mona Lisa I would assume. She looks so real, so detailed,
The ultra high resolution scanning done by him proved with evidence that eyebrows and eyelashes of Mona Lisa were originally painted but were lost later probably due to cleaning. “The most famous” is not necessarily the “most beautiful.” The ever elusive smile, the misty atmosphere, the hazy landscape in the background and, most of all, the ambiguous, inscrutable expression on the face of the sitter entrap the imagination, leaving questions
In 1499, the French invaded Milan and Da Vinci fled to Venice and then to Florence. During his time there he painted the “Mona Lisa” in 1503 to 1506. The woman in the painting has been the subject of speculation for centuries because of her curious smile. In the past, she was often thought to be Mona Lisa Gherardini, a courtesan, but later is was discovered
Which for him lasted about 30 years from 1490 to 1527, because of Charles V defeating Roman troops on his quest for imperialism. Leonardo Da Vinci’s major works of art that he contributed to the world are some that many have seen and even more have admired. The Mona Lisa is an oil painting on a wood board that can be described as the greatest treasure of Renaissance art work. I believe the painting is valued at more than $1 billion and is housed in the Louvre. Although Da Vinci’s painting is very well know, it is not signed or dated, like all of his works. It is said that Leonardo had hired musicians and troubadours to keep Lisa Gherardini smiling, she was the wife of Francesco Del Giocondo, and it look like his efforts payed off as his painting is now so famous and astounded. Leonardo Da Vinci had some competitors against him in the High Renaissance times of that of Michelangelo and Raphael, who were also excellent artists of their time. As for Da Vinci’s innovations, he was the person who from the term “Renaissance Man” comes from and which to refers to a person who has knowledge and skill in many different areas where he is also talented in. There is no one that better represents the ideal image of the Renaissance man better than Leonardo Da Vinci. He is thought of as the man who changed the way we look at art with his realistic paintings and all due to his way of thinking about the
This composition was created by Leonardo Da Vinci, a Quattrocento artist of the Italian Renaissance between the years of 1503 - 1506. The Mona Lisa is unquestionably acclaimed, with great artistic merit and value, to be the most highly revered, renowned painting. This form of art is a portrait, in which Leonardo Da Vinci has painted ‘une donna vera’ in a somewhat hazy landscape setting. In today’s society, ‘Lisa’ remains behind bulletproof glass, in a temperature-controlled box in her current residence, the Louvre museum, in which her role is to challenge each and every one of her 6 million annual visitors. With this in mind, she is one of, if not the most visited painting ever in existence.
