One of the main themes in The Great Gatsby is money makes the world go round. It becomes very clear that money can get a person to begin going in the right direction. Wealth is a significant theme in the book and it motivates many of the main events throughout the plot. The acquisition of Gatsby’s wealth rose a few questions about his skeptical morals. When it comes to money, the amount is not always the most important factor. There are some who say that anything has a dollar value, but in reality there are certain things in life that you cannot put a price on. They are the things that really matter in life, the things that will last, the things that you’ll have forever. Love and true happiness are two things Gatsby clearly is missing in his life. Gatsby doesn’t understand this concept and keeps throwing money at his problems in hope he’ll find the answer. Even surrounded by an enormous amount of people he is still lonely. After getting separated from the love of his life Daisy he throws parties and buys an expensive mansion across the bay from her, all in the hope of getting her attention. Even after he gets the opportunity to impress her it’s not enough to solidify his position with her. "It makes me sad because I've never seen such — such beautiful shirts before." This quote from daisy shows how moved she is after she sees the possessions Gatsby owns and she realizes the opportunity she has to be with him. After all that money is spent, in the end he is unsuccessful at winning her over and she returns to her husband. Even after he dies the exuberant amount he spent doesn’t matter because only three people show up to his funeral. Being materialist can’t always be the solution sometime a person needs to have some Transcendentalist thoughts, The Great Gatsby does a great job of showing that.
