Bowman, BUS 559, Spring 2015 Monsanto Business Assessment Current Situation Monsanto is a global sustainable agriculture company which employs more than 20,000 employees worldwide (“Who we are” 2015). Monsanto is the premium global seed provider for genetically modified organism (GMO) crops. They control about 80% of the US corn market and more than 90% of the US soybean market (Mitchell 2014). The services offered comprise complete agricultural biotechnology solutions for large and small scale farmers. They provide three basic products: 1. Seeds for genetically modified plants with improved phenotypic traits (drought resistance, disease resistance, chemical resistance, increased yield, etc.) 2. Crop protection chemicals, herbicides and pesticides (such as their most popular consumer-end product: Roundup) 3. A suite of soil bacteria that are known to be beneficial for plant productivity These product lines are aligned in such a way so that Monsanto becomes the full biotechnology provider for a farmer. The strategy is that one can supplement the soil with the correct microbe community, and then use pesticide-resistant seeds and the associated pesticide to selectively grow the desired crop at high yield. This saves on crop maintenance costs and increases yield achieved through an efficient monoculture strategy. Image is a problem for Monsanto. Being a front-runner in the licensed seed market, they took the brunt of establishing precedents for the legal ramifications involved
The image that Monsanto wants to give is to be environmentally friendly, promising better returns while promoting sustainable agriculture. It even gives the appearance of humanitarian organization focusing on world hunger. However, never a firm has been so controversial. It threatens food security but also the ecological balance of our planet. It is one of the biggest polluters ever. Corruption seems to be an important part of the way
Monsanto positions itself as a relatively new agricultural company having formed in 2002, and focused on supporting local farmers around the world. They also promote themselves as a guardian of the environment with a mission “to produce more food while conserving more” (Monsanto.com). Today’s Monsanto conglomerate also promotes itself as the “New Merchants,” a leading research company in the field of agriculture-crop production, as well as a strong supporter of public and private research through its grant, donations and University scholarship programs.
Especially with the aforementioned situations where Monsanto would sue other farmers for using their seeds, this concept is critical for Monsanto in order for them to remain successful and profitable. The image tries to convey this message in a multitude of ways, including the use of pathos, along with incorporating the text into the photo. Pathos is used in the visual to evoke a sense of community as it shows numerous individuals, of all ethnicities and ages, working together, along with the plants and crops that Monsanto has provided. This allows the reader to feel a sense of community regarding individuals across the globe, along with a sense of community between people and nature, all of which Monsanto is claiming to have a role in making happen. The text, and the style of the text, helps support this idea even further. Contrary to the prior photo, where the explicit message of Monsanto working to improve lives stands alone and draws attention away from the image, this photo integrates the text and images into one cohesive part of the photo that draws equal attention to its intended message. Considering the message is about working together, this is a strategic move by the author to have the form and design of the image to follow the content that the image is portraying (Sheffield). The
The farmers then give their products to the manufacturers, who represent the bottleneck of the food system (21). “The ten largest companies control half of the world’s seed supply. …Ten firms control 90% of the nearly $38.6 billion pesticide markets (111-112).” Monsanto, being one of the ten companies that controls the world’s seed supply, is a company that has patents on all of its seeds and products. It produces genetically modified crops that are resistant to its own pesticides and herbicides, so that when a pesticide or herbicide is sprayed and it destroys all plants, the Monsanto seed survives because of its resistance. The reason that Monsanto is able to stay in business is because of the economic benefit it poses for the farmers. They are able to produce their crops at a much higher yield because they are losing less of their crops to pests. This higher yield results in lower costs for the consumers as well (Planes). As discussed
When one company controls ninety-percent of a market, it is reasonable to open the doors to the possibility of a monopoly. This word is a board game to some, a boring econ principle to others, but a harsh reality for twenty-four million American farmers and their families. (Farmers Feed Us) Monsanto has taken control of the farming world and it is hitting farmers hard. The powerful company controls ninety-percent of the soybean market and much of other farming markers which are a lifeline for farmers across this country. It is clear to many that it is a monopoly, but nothing is being done to break up Monsanto. There is much controversy behind the issue on a political level and on what motifs there may be to keep the company together. Monsanto is hurting farmers by monopolizing the farming market and there are political ties behind the master plan to keep control.
Monsanto describes there work in a positive manner saying it is a breakthrough for the agricultural industry and they are trying to help farmers all over the world with crop problems. Such as pesticides, weeds, droughts and weather. They also claim to be an advantage because more food can be grown using GMOs and that’s what the world needs with the population drastically increasing over the years. “In about forty years, relentless dry spells may be more frequent across the Southwest, say climate scientists, and California may have more dry years like this one, in which a drought has crippled the agricultural sector” ( Ostrander, 6). Many people for GMOs say it’s a break though, because GMO crops can be grown regardless of the climate. However, there is nothing natural about the foods it is not worth harming the environment even more than our society already has.
Monsanto is involved in a variety of ways,“The company produces the herbicide RoundUp, and also seeds whose genes have been engineered to survive RoundUp's active plant-killing ingredient. Now the vast majority of this country's soybeans, corn, sugar beets and canola possess those engineered genes,”(Boyle). Initially, this seems quite innocent, however, there’s no telling what kind of chemicals are being introduced into the food supply in order to allow these plants to survive. Also, sugar and corn are contained within almost every non organic product Americans consume, which means virtually everyone is ingesting these potentially harmful chemicals. Monsanto’s RoundUp resistant seeds should seem to be a farmer’s best friend, but it’s not always so simple, “As Rinehart would recall, the man began verbally attacking him, saying he had proof that Rinehart had planted Monsanto’s genetically modified (G.M.) soybeans in violation of the company’s patent. Better come clean and settle with Monsanto, Rinehart says the man told him—or face the consequences,”(Barlett). Simply dogmatic in his manner, the mysterious Monsanto man would not take no for an answer, even though later in the article Mr. Rinehart states that he isn’t a farmer and they have the wrong guy. Commonly referred to as seed police, even gestapo or mafia, this elite force of Monsanto maniacs are lifeless and drone-like in the sense that they will stop at nothing in order to obtain a profit, and if it’s the wrong person they’ll still use scare tactics to weasel cash out of innocent civilians. Saying that Monsanto is heavily involved in the production and distribution of genetically modified crops and seeds is a massive understatement, to demonstrate this,“In 1996 when Monsanto introduced RoundUp Ready Soybeans, the company controlled only 2% of the U.S. soybean market. Now, over 90% of
In my opinion, we should be most concered about India's privitized agriculture and Indian farmers. I believe this because in the last decade more than 250,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide due to the expense put on Monsanto's seeds and pesticides. A problem with the seeds can also be so they are not bred for that area, so they fail more fequently, causing even more stress on farmers. The bigger organizations also use biotech cotton seeds which gives them a higher yeild but also requires higher amounts of water, which they have the funds for. However the smaller companies don't have acess to suitable irrigation and have mainly rain-fed crops, which means they fail more often and the farmers suffer even more. Monsanto's high cost of
Genetically engineered crops in the United States cover almost one quarter of all the cropland. Soybeans, cotton, and corn are the products that tend to be the most modified. GMOs do not only have the purpose of solving world hunger, but also to cure diseases and create vaccines. John and Cheryl talk about Monsanto and DuPont, another big company involved in the production of GMOs. These two companies claim that their products have the purpose of feed the world and at the same time reduce the use of pesticides and stop the production of erosion. Nonetheless, researches have shown that the claims of these companies have no support, since biotechnology has been improving quickly and the current study to prevent bigger mistakes in the future is
Monsanto is one of the largest conglomerates in the world with ties to the food industries in most countries. Their GMO corn and soy have been at one time planted on
It doesn’t help that Monsanto also has power in politics, one of the Monsanto chiefs for food safety, Michael Taylor was actually appointed by Barrack Obama himself. Barrack Obama also appointed his Supreme Court judge: Elena Kagan, who happens to be the chief defender of Monsanto and GMO’s. Whether Republican or Democratic, Monsanto wields a strong power within politics that helps give them an edge in keeping their company going. (Obama). There are good aspects of Monsanto, like the efficiency of cheap seeds, and crops that can withstand the harsh behaviors of weathers, and the ability the crops have to survive a longer time. But not even the cheapest crops can cover up Monsanto’s long history of evil, from polluting the environment with PCB’s, the chemical Agent Orange, and the weed killer “Round-Up Ready”, to Monopolizing itself to being the owner of 90% of the seed industry and shutting down small
Monsanto Company is the world’s largest seed company. They specialize in genetic manipulation of organisms.
The objective of this report is to analyze the differences in Monsanto’s experiences in the United States and Europe and the reasons of opposition in Europe, despite that, why Monsanto pushed ahead so hard.
If a new entrant came into the market that were able to utilize a lower cost strategy as well as learn from Monsanto’s mistakes and keep a clean record, they could potentially take market share away from Monsanto. This is mentioned briefly in terms of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., but additional information would be necessary to make a decision. Also, no information is made on Monsanto’s advertising or marketing efforts. They might not need to market products in the traditional consumer marketing sense, but an advertising campaign aimed at reestablishing corporate image could be very advantageous.
Big businesses have a major influence towards American agriculture. Large capital investments have contributed to the success of American agriculture. Monsanto is the world’s leading agricultural biotechnology company that has used fundamentally changed the way many
