Bowman, BUS 559, Spring 2015 Monsanto Business Assessment Current Situation Monsanto is a global sustainable agriculture company which employs more than 20,000 employees worldwide (“Who we are” 2015). Monsanto is the premium global seed provider for genetically modified organism (GMO) crops. They control about 80% of the US corn market and more than 90% of the US soybean market (Mitchell 2014). The services offered comprise complete agricultural biotechnology solutions for large and small scale farmers. They provide three basic products: 1. Seeds for genetically modified plants with improved phenotypic traits (drought resistance, disease resistance, chemical resistance, increased yield, etc.) 2. Crop protection chemicals, herbicides and pesticides (such as their most popular consumer-end product: Roundup) 3. A suite of soil bacteria that are known to be beneficial for plant productivity These product lines are aligned in such a way so that Monsanto becomes the full biotechnology provider for a farmer. The strategy is that one can supplement the soil with the correct microbe community, and then use pesticide-resistant seeds and the associated pesticide to selectively grow the desired crop at high yield. This saves on crop maintenance costs and increases yield achieved through an efficient monoculture strategy. Image is a problem for Monsanto. Being a front-runner in the licensed seed market, they took the brunt of establishing precedents for the legal ramifications involved
